Irvine is an environmental education organization.

Our mission is to educate and inspire current and future generations to

explore, respect and protect nature.

At Irvine: we guide learning. We live green. We foster respect.

And we thrive outdoors.

Dear Members & Friends,

What an amazing year this has been!

The last 12 months at Irvine have seen tremendous growth: opening the Outdoor Classroom, raising a new barn for campouts, expanding and improving our trails, adding an additional preschool classroom, and more. Our highlights, on the next two pages, point to select achievements that bolstered this year’s successes. We couldn’t be more proud!

But even with all these impressive developments, one thing has remained constant. Irvine has held steadfast to the belief that children need nature in their lives. Young people thrive outdoors and, in today’s digital society, Irvine’s programming makes it possible for them to do so.

Now securely out of the woods after the tough global economic times that began in 2008, Irvine has been able to make concrete progress on our ever-lengthening list of ways to educate about the environment. And after such a momentous 2011-2012, we’re certain that you’ll be inspired by our plans for the year ahead.

We are pleased to share this 2012 annual report with you, our greatest supporters, as it so well represents the work we are able to accomplish together.

Thank you so much for your continued contributions. They magnify what Irvine is able to do, and as you’ll see from the following pages, they are making an indelible impression on the next generation of nature’s explorers, respecters and protectors.

Sincerely,

Angus M. Burton Peggy F. O’NeillBoard President Executive Director

About Our New Multi-Purpose Classroom

In keeping with our mission to educate, Irvine’s Board of Trustees decided in June 2012 to make some necessary modifications to the exhibit hall near our main entrance. This involved relocating the Nature Store to a more forward, eye-catching position, and retro-fitting the old store space as a second multi-purpose classroom. This beneficial transformation accommodates our growing preschool, and strengthens our ability to provide environmental education programming to all.

outdoor classroom grand opening

With a ceremonial snip of the ribbon on October 1, 2011, Julie Bowen, star of the ABC comedy Modern Family, officially opened our Outdoor Classroom. Since then, the natural space has been a star attraction for hundreds of youngsters who climb, create, perform, explore, observe, build and learn in a setting with musical instruments, a stage, tree-stump seating and a real water pump.

first national nature preschool conference

In June, Irvine hosted the Nature Preschool Conference – the first of its kind in the nation. Nearly 100 educators, some from as far away as Colorado, attended the 2-day event to learn and share insights about nature-based learning for preschool children. Keynote Speaker David Sobel, author of the acclaimed book Beyond Ecophobia, urged educators to give students frequent opportunities to be at-one in nature.

relaunched urBan education program

In late 2011, Irvine launched a new urban education program, piloting a comprehensive initiative at New Song Academy in Baltimore, aimed at increasing

environmental literacy through hands-on learning and teacher professional development. Irvine is also developing an Upstream Downstream curriculum with Blue Water Baltimore, which will give students a real-world introduction to the Chesapeake Bay and its watersheds.

new classroom, revamped store

Irvine’s swift growth has created demand for more education space. In

June 2012, Irvine initiated a plan to have a second multi-purpose classroom available in time for September’s doubling of The Nature Preschool. This meant moving the Nature Store to a more prominent location across from a new and more welcoming reception space. Already, the classroom is used daily by our preschool and for educational programs.

gathering space, and our fire pits were used to smoke dinner and cook s’mores. The 7- to 10-year-old children went on a nighttime nature hike, listened for owls, and created a hide-out in the rebuilt wigwam at Irvine’s Native American site.

neared 70,000 visitors

In June, Irvine welcomed its 68,000th annual visitor, an increase of more than 20,000 from the 2010-2011 year. This 28% growth has been seen across the board, with website visitors doubling and education programs selling out. Our donors and members have made it possible for Irvine

to support this amazing growth, and we expect the trajectory to continue this year.

successful PumPkins on the Green & Birdies on the GreenIrvine’s third annual “un-gala” was Irvine’s highest grossing fundraiser to date, raising more than $115,000 for environmental education programs. The jean-casual event saw one of the live auction items going for more than $20,000! New this year was Birdies on the Green, a friendly golf tournament held on May’s first rainy day. The event raised in $15,000.

national recognition for roB mardiney

Director of Education Rob Mardiney joined the prestigious group of Garden Club of

America’s Elizabeth Abernathy Hull Award winners. The award, given for outstanding achievements in furthering the early environmental education of children, was presented at the Green Spring Valley Garden Club annual meeting, held at Irvine in March 2012.

summer camp expansion with multi-week options

Irvine’s newest summer camp program, Chesapeake Chefs, introduced campers to the way our food gets to our tables. The week-long camp, which sold out in its first year, taught “tweens” about food sources using

biology, chemistry and nutrition. Many of this summer’s 540 campers attended multiple sessions with a variety of themes.

exploring every inch of irvine

After a year of work, Irvine completed its comprehensive map of the 116-acre property’s trails and features. This map, combined with new signage, encourages everyone to explore the far reaches of our land, including the meadows and wetlands. In 2012, we focused on the back portions of the property with “geo-caching” programs, meadow restoration, tree plantings, trails signs and a bigger wigwam.

OUR FOCUS: CONSERVATION & CHILDREN

Here at Irvine, we teach children to explore, respect and protect nature. But are we succeeding at

creating the next generation of environmental stewards?

For this year’s Annual Report, we decided to go right to the source, and ask the

children in our programs to share their thoughts about Irvine, nature, and

what they can do to preserve the planet.

Their responses encourage us to continue our important work, and gives us confidence that the

future is in good hands!

To read the interviews of all five children in their entirety, please visit www.explorenature.com/annualreport.

You’ve got to think about the future, and what will be left behind for children.Children growing up in Baltimore City might feel removed from the wealth of nature in our Piedmont region, but not for 16-year-old Kristina. For the past two summers, she has worked at Irvine, training to be a naturalist and summer camp counselor, with a paid part-time job supported through the St. Paul’s Bridges program. “Everyone looks puzzled when I say ‘I took the opossum for a walk.’ They ask all sorts of questions,” she said. “It’s a really cool job.”

Irvine’s Summer Fellowship Program, part of its urban education initiative, has welcomed eight participants in the past two years. The program is funded by The Albert Shapiro Fund.

How would you describe Irvine?Educational.

What would you say to the President to convince him to support environmental causes?I would relate it to his kids. When his daughters grow up, doesn’t he want them to be surrounded by trees? No one wants to be surrounded by trash. You’ve got to think about the future, and what will be left behind for children.

How is this program helping you?Well, I really like nature. And I consider myself an environmentalist, like I think we should recycle and care about the future of the planet. You can learn stuff from any job, but I really love what I learn here. And it’s important that I have access to all these different opportunities.

Irvine is so appreciative of our help. We’re coming back.

PLastic bags can make it to the Chesapeake Bay.

To celebrate turning 12 on Earth Day 2012, Sam asked family and friends to join her for a day of volunteering at Irvine. Sam and 40 of her guests placed rocks in the Outdoor Classroom’s dry river bed and removed invasive plants from Irvine’s gardens. “Irvine is so appreciative of our help,” said Sam, a self-described “nature child,” who promised, “we’re coming back again next year.”

About 350 people under the age of 18 volunteered at Irvine in the past year. Volunteers of all ages who donate their time and skills to Irvine reap the physical and emotional rewards of being outside and doing good work.

How would you describe Irvine?Woodsy.

What’s your favorite animal at Irvine?I love all animals and it’s so hard to choose. I do really like the terrapins. They have such cute faces!

How do you encourage your friends to volunteer? My friends are all such troupers. They enjoy coming with me and spending Earth Day helping and doing good. I hope they’ll all start volunteering with me here too, when we’re old enough.

Without doubt, 9-year-old Adam is a naturalist in training. In fact, he arrived for his interview with us carrying his new gecko habitat, and he explained in detail how he would care for the animal by using its favorite food, as he learned during one of Irvine’s Day Off camps. When he grows up, Adam wants to be a herpetologist, a job he said “is special because you can study things that are creepy, crawly and cool.”

Irvine offers 150 nature-themed programs, including many that are free, to families and children each year, instilling in children a love and respect for nature.

How would you describe Irvine? Awesome.

Why should we recycle?Recycling helps the earth. And trash can eventually go other places. If we throw plastic bags in the woods, it can make it

to the Chesapeake Bay, and then it could hurt a sea turtle. Sea turtles can accidentally think a plastic bag is a jellyfish.

What has been your favorite program here? I like the Junior Naturalists because you learn different things and because it’s something to do on weekends besides taking a nature walk with my family.

We did lots of art, like a nature journal and painting.

Because I just want to run around outside!

Cypress, a shy and whip-smart 7-year-old, was a Rookie Ranger and a Nature Nut in his third year at Irvine’s summer camps, which combine outdoor fun with lessons in nature and ecology. In 2012, Irvine enrolled a record 540 campers, including Cypress, who said he wants a “fun” job when he grows up. What’s fun? “A scientist,” he said, “because they work with gems and fossils.”

How would you describe Irvine?Fun.

What’s your favorite color?Rainbow! I like to show my little brother that when you spray the hose near the sunlight, it makes a whole lot of colors, just like a rainbow.

What’s Summer Nature Camp like?I wanted to go for the whole summer! We did lots of art, like a nature journal and painting. I met the opossum, and

it only liked blueberries, but not strawberries. That’s the opposite of me, since I like strawberries but not blueberries. And I told the kids to look out for poison ivy. It has three leaves and a furry vine.

Five-year-old Daniel graduated from our licensed Nature Preschool this past May. Like his peers, he explored trails, played in our Outdoor Classroom and met live animals in a program that combines academic readiness with environmental awareness. His favorite thing about The Nature Preschool is Bug Bingo with Miss Sophie, which has taught him to identify grasshoppers and click beetles. “With four bugs in a row, you win,” he explained. “ And then I find the bugs outdoors too!”

Now in its third year, The Nature Preschool has doubled enrollment to 55 students, who learn about the natural world by being immersed in it.

How would you describe Irvine?Happy.

What do you want to be when you grow up?I don’t know. Maybe something like a police officer. Or an

athlete that goes running and plays a sport. Because I just want to run around outside!

What do you like to do with your family at Irvine?I like to climb the one hollow, stand-up tree in the back of the Outdoor Classroom that you can get inside. And I like to hike to the Gazebo too.

I joined the Legacy Society so Irvine can continue its work for future generations. The Legacy Society is a group of Irvine supporters who have made a lasting commitment to sustaining our educational programs and natural resources for future generations. They have designated Irvine as a beneficiary in their estate plans.

Past Board President and Legacy Society Member Nancy Allchin said, “Irvine is a leader in teaching children about the natural world, with the ultimate purpose of protecting the environment. I decided to join through a bequest in my will, so Irvine can continue its work for future generations.”

We thank our members for their dedication to Irvine and for their foresight in providing for its future. For information about planned giving, call Anna Lincoln Whitehurst at 443-738-9236.
