AS HOME PIANOS BECAME POPULAR AFTER THE CIVIL WAR A DEMAND FOR SHEET MUSIC WAS CREATED. THIS SECTION OF NEW YORK CITY BEGAN TO EMERGE AS THE CAPTIAL OF MUSIC PUBLISHING. IT WAS WHERE SONG-WRITING AND MUSICAL IDEAS MIXED TO CREATE AMERICAN POPULAR MUSIC—A BLEND OF BLUES, JAZZ, AND RAGTIME.

SHEET MUSIC WAS ALSO NEEDED FOR A NEW TYPE OF ENTERTAINMENT—VAUDEVILLE SHOWS.

SONGS LIKE IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME , GIVE MY REGARDS TO BRAODWAY AND SHINE ON HARVEST MOON WERE ALL WRITTEN FOR VAUDEVILLE. FAMOUS SONGWRITERS LIKE IRVING BERLIN, COLE PORTER, SCOTT JOPLIN AND GEORGE GERSHWIN EMERGED FROM THIS AREA.

In March 1932 Lindbergh’s twenty month old son was kidnapped—it was the most famous kidnapping and investigation of the time. The baby’s body was found in May, but the man responsible (Bruno Hauptmann) was not arrested until 1934. He was electrocuted in 1936.

Glenn Curtiss was known as the “Father of Naval Aviation” and the “Founder of the American Aircraft Industry”.

His company built aircraft for the U.S. Army and Navy, and, during the years leading up to World War I, his experiments with seaplanes led to advances in naval aviation. Curtiss civil and military aircraft were predominant after WWI and during WWII.
