What is CPR? Strut!

CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

CPR is when one or more individuals breathe and pump blood for an unconscious victim that has no pulse and can not breathe on his or her own.

CPR can save lives, especially if it is administered immediately after the victim collapses.

Who should know CPR?

EVERYONE

CPR certified individuals save lives, so the more people who know CPR the better

Is a person who is CPR certified required to administer CPR to an unconscious victim?

NO

An individual should only perform CPR if they feel comfortable in the particular situation.

Face shields can be placed in a wallet or even on a key chain to help protect an individual giving CPR to an unconscious victim.

Why People Do Not Act

Scared they will hurt the victim: A victim that does not have a pulse and is not breathing is clinically dead. You can not hurt them, you can only help them.

Afraid of disease: Face shields and be carried on key chains or in wallets and used to create a barrier of protection when giving rescue breaths.

Hands Only CPR Chest compressions are better than doing nothing!

Hands only CPR reduces the risk of disease transmission and increases a person’s willingness to take action.

Hands only CPR works because the person’s blood still contains oxygen. Circulating this blood for them will help deliver this oxygen to the cells of their body.

CAB Circulation: To circulate blood through a victims

body, the rescuer performs chest compressions in between the nipple line with the heel of their hand.

Air way: This refers to the head tilt chin lift maneuver. This opens the airway and allows a rescuer to administer breathes.

Breathing: Two rescue breathes are administered during the head tilt chin lift while pinching off the victims nose.

Circulation Compress the sternum 2 in deep. Visual

landmark would be along the nipple line.

Press Fast and hard. 100 compressions per minute

The force for compressions will come from your body, not by flexing and extending the elbows. Elbows should be locked.

Allow the chest to completely recoil before beginning the next compression.

Air Way

If you are a lone rescuer use a face shield with a one way valve do not use a bag.

It is too difficult to repeatedly get a tight seal with the bag, so when alone using the face shield is best.

Breathing Even breathes each delivered over the span of one

second. Blowing too hard can cause gastric inflation.

Make sure the chest rises as the breathes go in.

If there is no chest rise, reposition the head and repeat the process

If breathes still do not go in look for an object in the victims throat. Remove the object if it is visible, but never perform a blind finger sweep.

An AED diagnoses different heart conditions and walks someone through CPR step by step

An AED has the ability to shock a victim if it deems necessary.

If the device tells you to shock clear the area and administer the shock.

Placement of Pads

Steps in Adult CPR with AED(not breathing and no pulse)

Check the scene and responsiveness of the victim

Send for help to call emergency number (911) and to get an AED

Follow the steps of CPR until the AED arrives: 30 Compressions to 2 breathes during the head tilt chin lift

Hook the victim up to the AED and follow the prompts outlined by the device until help arrives

Steps in Adult CPR(Victim begins breathing and heart starts beating)

If a victim is unconscious, there is no threat of spinal injury, and is breathing on his or her own place them in the recovery position and monitor them for CPR needs.

Two Rescuer CPR Rescuer A begins CPR while rescuer B

calls 911 and gets an AED Rescuer A continues to administer CPR

while rescuer B attaches the AED without interrupting rescuer A’s ability to perform CPR

Once the AED is attached and is done analyzing, Rescuer A will administer rescue breaths while rescuer B does compressions

After 5 cycles they switch and continue the process until help arrives.

Can a person be sued for performing CPR?

NO

There are laws to protect individuals who try to save a person’s life by performing CPR on them.

A person is protected from being sued unless it can be proven that he or she was negligent or malicious in their actions.
