THE PROBLEM A utility substation was repeatedly targeted for theft of copper from wires and transformers. This criminal act could lead to power outages, and leave a transformer ungrounded, leading to a dangerous situation for workers. The utility company tried implementing different measures to prevent this type of theft, including installing cameras that stored recordings on-site for later viewing, and hiring security officers. Unfortunately, their efforts were not effective in stopping the thefts.

THE SOLUTION The utility company finally hired ECAMSECURE, who added their cutting-edge security cameras and installed invisible trip wire for virtual perimeter security. The system also included a siren and voice audio system to warn intruders to vacate the property. Breaking the invisible barrier triggered an alert to the ECAMSECURE UL-listed monitoring station to verify the intrusion before alerting law enforcement.

THE RESULT

Theft on the utility company property decreased significantly. In many cases, the ECAMSECURE audible warning alone is enough to send an intruder fleeing from the scene. However, in one case, an intruder proceeded beyond the warning, but the thief was still stopped; the virtual guard security solution helped to capture and prosecute the thief, and prevented additional damage to the vital electrical grid components.
