Engineering is
everywhere…Almost everything you eat, wear,
use and like to do involves
engineering.
From everyday things like your
mobile, computer and clothes to
medicine, space, national security
and renewable energy
… to tackling climate change,
providing clean drinking water or
ensuring sustainable food supplies.
Engineering is not
science…Engineers generally don't "do"
science. Science is about
discovering the natural. Engineering
is creating the artificial.
“Scientists discover the world that
exists; engineers create the world
that never was.” – Theodore Von
Karman, Aerospace Engineer (1881-
1963)
Chemical Engineering
Everything around us is made of
chemicals. Chemical changes can
be used to produce all kinds of
useful products.
…discover and manufacture better
plastics, paints, fuels, fibers,
medicines, and all other kinds of
chemicals.
…help protect the environment,
inventing cleaner technologies,
study the fate of chemicals in the
environment.
Mechanical Engineering
…might develop a bike lock or an
aircraft carrier, a child’s toy or a
hybrid car engine, a wheelchair or a
sailboat—in other words, just about
anything you can think of that
involves a mechanical process
…often referred to as the general
practitioners of the engineering
profession, since they work in nearly
every area of technology, from
aerospace and automotive to
computers and biotechnology.
Civil Engineering
…build a school that could
withstand an earthquake, a road
system that puts an end to traffic
jams, or a sports stadium that offers
everyone a great view?
Your job would be to oversee the
construction of the buildings and
infrastructure that make up our
world: highways, skyscrapers,
railways, bridges
architects put designs on paper, but
civil engineers actually get things
built.
You might develop cutting-edge music
software, come up with a better system
to IM your friends, or invent a new hand-
held device.
…vitally important in almost every area
you can think of. In a hospital computers
track patient records, control X-ray and
MRI machines, and offer surgeons visual
maps of the operations.
Could develop software for managing an
air traffic control tower or produce
animation for the movies
Computer Engineering
School subjects lead to
real world engineering
• Maths• Physics
• Design and
Technology
• ICT
• Biology
• Chemistry
Design, develop, produce…
Engineering’s about…
• Finding out what people need,
developing
an idea and seeing how it can be
made at a good price
• Developing the ‘product’ on time
and running tests to make sure it’s
safe and reliable
• Producing something that makes our
lives better… whether that’s a new
games console, high-tech sports equipment
or quicker, greener and safer travel
Professional
Qualifications…• Once in work, consider becoming
professionally registered and earn the
right to use letters after your name –
NSBE.org
• Registration requires a combination of
qualifications and work experience
• Some degree courses are accredited and
will give you a head start
Why I recommend
engineering…
• Being part of a creative process
• Designing solutions to meet
customers’ needs
• Testing and improving technology
• Range of roles and responsibilities
• Working in a multidisciplinary team
• Doing something different every day
• Good salaries are achievable
How to get involved…Things you can do:• Join a STEM/or Engineering Club STEM Clubs• Take up an engineering challengeNational Science + Engineering Competition
• Ask your school to organise a visit froman engineerSTEM Ambassadors• Visit an exhibition or museum
