    The Solar Systemformed 4.6 billion years agofrom the gravitational collapse of a giant

    molecular cloud.The vast majority of the system'smassis in the Sun, with most of the remaining

    mass contained inJupiter.The four smaller inner planets,Mercury,Venus,EarthandMars,alsocalled theterrestrial planets,are primarily composed of rock and metal. The four outer planets,

    called thegas giants,are substantially more massive than the terrestrials. The two largest,Jupiter

    andSaturn,are composed mainly of hydrogen and helium; the two outermost planets,UranusandNeptune,are composed largely of substances with relatively high melting points (comparedwith hydrogen and helium), calledices,such as water, ammonia andmethane,and are often

    referred to separately as "ice giants". All planets have almost circular orbits that lie within a

    nearly flat disc called theecliptic plane.

    The Solar System also contains regions populated bysmaller objects.[d]

    Theasteroid belt,which

    lies between Mars and Jupiter, mostly contains objects composed, like the terrestrial planets, ofrock and metal. Beyond Neptune's orbit lie theKuiper beltandscattered disc,linked populations

    oftrans-Neptunian objectscomposed mostly of ices. Within these populations are several dozen

    to more than ten thousand objects that may be large enough to have been rounded by their own

    gravity.

    Such objects are referred to asdwarf planets.Identified dwarf planets include theasteroidCeresand the trans-Neptunian objectsPlutoandEris.[d]

    In addition to these two regions,

    various other small-body populations, includingcomets,centaursandinterplanetary dust,freelytravel between regions. Six of the planets, at least three of the dwarf planets, and many of thesmaller bodies are orbited bynatural satellites,

    [e]usually termed "moons" after Earth'sMoon.

    Each of the outer planets is encircled byplanetary ringsof dust and other small objects.

    Thesolar wind,a flow ofplasmafrom the Sun, creates abubblein theinterstellar medium

    known as theheliosphere,which extends out to the edge of thescattered disc.TheOort cloud,

    which is believed to be the source forlong-period comets,may also exist at a distance roughly athousand times further than the heliosphere. Theheliopauseis the point at which pressure from

    the solar wind is equal to the opposing pressure ofinterstellar wind.The Solar System is located

    in theOrion Arm,26,000 light years from the center of theMilky Way.
