MARCY’S MUSINGS

“What’s the buzz, tell me what’s a happening?!” It’s a New Year with lots of good stuff happening.

As of 1/1/19, Camden County will take over the

supervision of our lunch program from SCUCS. The

only significant change ,given the rise in food prices, is

that the cost of the meal will go from $2.50 to $3.00 per

meal.

Given that Gail Siegel was an employee of SCUCS, she

will no longer be working at the JCC site. Many of you

attended Gail’s Retirement Celebration on 12/28 when

we thanked her for 13 years of dedicated service .

Our Tuesday schedule will also undergo change. Nancy,

one of our song leaders, is retiring. We thank her for

leading us in song for many months. The following

details the new & improved Tuesday schedule:

1st Tues. NEW Yoga/Pilates Chair Fusion

2nd Tues. Traditions w/Batya & We Sing w/Cantor 3rd Tues. Yoga/Pilates Chair Fusion

4th Tues. Traditions with Gilah and We Sing w/Cantor

5th Tues. Traditions w/ Gilah & Yoga/Pilates Fusion

We will also welcome once again two Occupational

Therapy students from Stockton for 10 Wednesdays,

beginning January 30, to assist with Creative Crafts,

Arm Chair Exercise and lunch. This is a win/win

partnership.

We hope to see YOU at our Post New Year’s lox and

Luncheon with the Arts on 1/11 as Stephen Fuller

entertains us with songs of the crooners. The JCC Open

House on 1/6 will bring new members, and Life Long

A FOND FAREWELL AND THANK

After 13 years of working as Nutrition Coordinator for the Senior Meal Program, it is time to retire & have the County take over the meal program from SCUCS.

A big Thank You to all the members, volunteers and my colleagues who made my job rewarding.

IN THE FAMILY

We are saddened by the loss of these belovved members: , Sunny Butchin, Elizabeth Meisler and

Robert Snyder. May their memory be a blessing for

family and friends.

LIFE LONG LEARNING NEWS

What is STEM?

STEM is a new method of learning which incorporates

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Our

Katz JCC has a brand new, exciting STEM Lab across

from the Main Office and you can often watch our Early

Childhood students conducting fun experiments while

learning.

STEM Learning is not just for children! In our new

semester of Life Long Learning, you can register for a

one-time lab which will give you an opportunity to use

our new 3D printer and understand how this new

technology can be used in our everyday lives.

This two hour lab is on Wednesday, March 27th from

10:00am-12 Noon. The tuition is only $10 for a JCC

Member and $15 for a Guest. Register online or by

dropping a registration form in the box located outside

the Adult Department.

No previous science or technical experience is necessary. Our Katz JCC Stem Lab Coordinator, Will Davis, will make learning fun!

THE 2019 GOAL

STAY HEALTHY: REDUCE, REUSE

AND RECYCLE

Staying healthy means taking care of your mind and

your body. One way to take care of yourself is to take care of the environment in which you live. Environment

doesn’t mean just the outdoors. It is everything around

you and in your home. New Jersey Nurses Newsletter

suggests a few things that you can do help take care of

your environment.

Reduce and reuse it. Recycling is great, but it is just a

start. Reuse plastic bags and containers. Buy reusable

shopping bags and reusable water bottles. According to

the Wall Street Journal, we use 100 billion shopping

bags a year in the US. When you can no longer use them,

recycle them.

Turn it off. Cut your consumption of water and

electricity. Turn the water off while brushing your

teeth. Turn the radio and TV off when you are not

watching or listening. Turn the heat down slightly when

you are away.

Travel light. If you are going a short distance, try to

walk.

Eat local. In our geographic area, buy local during the

growing season. Supporting local farmers means less

fuel used in transportation of your food.

Clean green. Use natural or homemade cleaning

products to decrease your exposure to chemicals and to

decrease the amount of chemicals entering our water

stream. Keep white vinegar, baking soda, natural coarse

salt and lemon handy for cleaning.

Recycle. Learn what your township recycles and where

and when to recycle.

What a great way to start 2019!

TOP FILMS OF 2018

2018 has brought many wonderful films to the cinema. Stars were born and diversity was king. Balancing entertainment, prestige and craftsmanship, both blockbusters and independent movies told compelling, engaging, and heartwarming stories .So, as award season buzzes near, here are what I feel are some of the best films of 2018.

A Star is Born – Bradley Cooper breathes new life into this age old story about the rise and fall of stardom. Lady Gaga is dazzling in this career defining performance. From the music to the direction to the romance, if you are not crying at the end, then you don’t have eyes. Can You Ever Forgive Me? – Melissa McCarthy delivers the best performance of her career as she tells the story of Lee Israel, an author who forged fake letters from celebrities to make ends meet. Marjeue Heller’s deft direction, matched with the performances from McCarthy and Richard E. Grant, make this a beautiful look at the stories of those that are typically not told. Green Book – This film celebrates the human spirit in such an entertaining way. It’s about a middle class Bronx driver and his African American client who drive through the racially-charged South for a concert tour. I sat there laughing from ear to ear, but then thinking about the deep morals the film depicts. Viggo Mortensen is terrific and Mahershala Ali gives you goosebumps. This true life friendship is the feel good film of the year. Three Identical Strangers – This is the best documentary I have ever seen! The story is about three identical triplets who were separated at birth in the 1970’s only to be reunited when they found each other 19 years later! From there, it twists and turns in ways only a documentary could tell. Mostly surprising, and sometimes sad as it is truly incredible. Roma – Alfonso Cuaron’s masterpiece captures life in its truest form. This film explores Cuaron’s experience of his parents’ divorce and the effect it had, on the family’s maid, through the eyes of first time actor Yalitza Aparicio. The aesthetics of the film are staggering, leaving you in complete awe of the cinematic mastery on display. AND DON’T FORGET TO SAVE THE DATE FOR THE CHERRY HILL VOLVO CARS JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL MARCH 31 TO APRIL 7. LOOK FOR SOME GREAT SURPRISES WITH IN THE LINE-UP. Antony Post, Cinema Features Editor

COUPLES CLUB The Couples Club wishes all who read this a happy and healthy 2019. We are looking forward to a full calendar

of scheduled monthly meetings and outstanding events

in 2019.

I want to take a moment to comment on how we

finished 2018. We had a spectacular Couples Club

Hanukkah Party. Over 90 members enjoyed a holiday

meal of turkey, brisket, latkes, kugel, salad, vegetables

and a dessert buffet. Live entertainment offered good

listening and spirited dancing music. We also enjoyed

Laughter & Lo Mein at the JCC. The Kosher Chinese

menu and two comedians rounded out the year for the

club.

We have a lot planned for 2019 already. Our monthly

meeting, January 8, will feature an interesting speaker,

a brief business meeting and coffee and cake. We then

plan to attend two JCC events: the Adult Department’s

After New Year’s Bagel & Lox Bruncheon on January 4

and Luncheon with the Arts, January 11, featuring The

“Great Crooners and More with Stephen Fuller”. In

March, we are off to the show, Mishuggah Nuns, at the

Pitman Theater.

We try to keep our members active. Try us out! The

Couples Club usually meets the second Tuesday of the month, 7:30 pm, in the JCC Social Hall. We do take a

break in February by skipping our meeting.

As members of the JCC, you and your significant other

can join the Couples Club as part of your JCC

membership. If you are interested in attending a

meeting, stop by the Adult Department for more

information.
