Dear Applicant

Thank you for your interest in joining Wales Millennium Centre.

As Wales’ national performing arts centre our vision is to ‘Inspire our Nation and Impress the World’. The Centre’s achievements in our first 12 years have been incredible. We have welcomed over 16.5 million visitors through our doors, over 4 million theatre attendees and inspired over 300,000 children and young people through our Creative Learning program. However, we are not complacent, and there is still much for us to achieve, and as a comparatively young organisation, we welcome new ideas and fresh ways of thinking.

This is an exciting time in the Centre’s history. We have recently refocused some key teams so that we have the capacity and capability to deliver our future ambition, resulting in new roles and new opportunities. The Centre has built a very strong platform of success and these roles offer the opportunity for you to bring your ideas, creativity, passion, knowledge and experience to the Centre. In return, the successful candidate will be part of a strong team in a world class venue, which is becoming a true ‘creative powerhouse’ in every way.

Thank you for your interest and pôb lwc!

Best wishes

Mathew MilsomManaging Director

Our vision

Wales Millennium Centre aims to ‘Inspire our Nation and Impress the World’

IntroductionWales Millennium Centre is Wales’ national performing arts Centre, situated at the heart of Cardiff Bay. Opened in 2004 by Her Majesty the Queen, our iconic home of culture and creativity set over a 7.5 acre site has welcomed over 16.5 million people through our doors – and we continue to be one of Wales’ most popular visitor attractions.

Home to eight other residents with whom we collaborate with and support, our mission is to create a focal point for the culture, identity and talents of Wales. Our aim is to Inspire our nation and Impress the world through showcasing a wide range of theatrical genres, creative education programmes, festivals and exhibitions, which have positive impact and long lasting benefit for individuals, families and communities.

We strive to provide memorable experiences and life changing opportunities that unlock creativity, whether by presenting world class musical theatre and drama; by creating and producing new artistic work or through the opportunity to discover and participate in the arts.

We are proud to be supported by the Arts Council of Wales and Welsh Government, and we are equally proud that this subsidy represents only 21% of our annual income. Our work to raise the aspiration of every young person in Wales and to supporting the arts in Wales is largely funded by ticket revenues, fundraised income and our loyal supporters.

ParticipationOur Creative Learning and Participation Strategy aims to develop aspiration, self-belief and creative skills amongst young people across Wales. We want to create positive life experiences for families, children and young people, with a special focus on those disengaged or impacted by poverty and disadvantage.

Last year we worked with around 70,000 young people through a variety of initiatives, workshops and performances. Our projects enable people to find their creative voice, and to support a lifelong journey to explore it. We believe that everyone has an artistic voice, whether expressed through singing, spoken word, dance, written word, visual arts or other art forms and

crafts. Finding this voice enhances life and creates new opportunities – empowering people for a stronger future.

Check out our Radio Platfform project which engages young people aged 16-25 to find and express their voice on issues that matter to them and their communities. This is just one of our projects that aims to offer life learning activities rooted in immersive experiences underpinned by innovative digital learning content and resources.

As our Philanthropy Manager, your role will be to engage current and new donors with our creative learning projects, so that we can reach more young people and provide transformative experiences with them.

PresentingThe first major musical staged at the Centre was Miss Saigon and since that time we have presented more than 500 titles on our main stage and welcomed over 4 million theatre goers.

The stunning Donald Gordon Theatre has become a home from home for large scale West End touring musicals such as Les Misérables; epic drama such as War Horse and spellbinding dance such as Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissor Hands and Birmingham Royal Ballet Swan lake.

Our Weston Studio offers audiences an eclectic mix of established and emerging theatre, dance, and music to enjoy, as well as workshops, talks, exhibitions and festival activities.

The Centre also presents a seasonal programme of live music, entertainment and cabaret in a relaxed setting, where the experience is complemented by a range of creative cocktails and delectable dishes.

These spaces provide the Centre with a platform to give, share and celebrate voice – one of our key roles as a cultural hub in the capital.

Producing As well as receiving high quality productions, the Centre has embarked on a journey to produce our own artistic work, creating ‘made in Wales’ productions that will showcase the best of Wales to the world.

In 2016 the Centre, with National Theatre Wales, produced one of the largest cultural events the city has ever seen. The Centenary of Cardiff Born Roald Dahl was marked by Roald Dahl’s City of the Unexpected – a unique spectacular of performances and events including the unexpected arrival of a Giant Peach, a fantastic tight rope walking Fox and a huge pyjama picnic in the park.

We were also thrilled to present our first main stage production, Only the Brave. Set in the Second World War, this told the heart-breaking and inspirational story of two couples brought together by this conflict. In November 2017, the Centre produced and launched the world premiere of Tiger Bay the Musical, an exciting theatrical journey into the bawdy public houses and alleyways of old Butetown in Cardiff, and the multi-ethnic community at the dawn of the 20th Century.

We continue to build a strong portfolio of smaller scale productions including Man to Man, and co-productions such as La Voix Humaine with Welsh National Opera. Many of these productions have toured the UK and are embarking on journeys further afield.

In our quest to further develop our profile for delivering a diverse, engaging and empowering programme, the Centre has produced a biennial festival which celebrates one of Wales’ greatest assets – the voice. The inaugural ‘Festival of Voice’ was held in 2016 and comprised over 100 performances in 52 different venues across the city. Our next is set for June 2018 and will include the very best in international and local talent as well as a range of co-productions, community choirs and accessible events which engage widespread participation.

Our objectivesBy creating inspirational and life changing experiences that broadens horizons, in the coming years the Centre will seek to:

Raise the aspiration of every young person in Wales Be accessible to everyone Be celebrated as one of the leading performing arts centres in the world Create innovative work that showcases Wales to the world
