On Monday 17 February our Open Boys Cricket team travelled to Deniliquin for the annual Davidson Shield Gala Day. With students ranging from Year 7 to Year 11, we were both experienced and enthusiastic. Our first game against Barham resulted in a 20-run victory. With stand out performances from Jensen Hargreaves (40 not out) and Bailey Caughey (3-3). This great result placed us in the final against a very strong Finley team who were extremely confident after defeating Deniliquin off the final ball of their match. Hay batted first and although the scoring was slow, were able to retain wickets which enabled us to post a small but competitive total of 72. Top scorer in the innings was Richard Weymouth with 16. Finley started very strongly, making 32 off the first 4 overs before accurate bowling from Jensen Hargreaves, Adrian Pascoe and Daniel Stewart resulted in Finley losing wickets and the runs drying up. After some tense middle overs, Finley were able to break the shackles of the Hay bowlers and secure victory by 4 wickets and with 4 overs to spare. Thanks to all students for their excellent behaviour and sportsmanship. Special mention to those students who assisted Barham in their matches and to Ms Booth for driving the bus and scoring. NSW Department of Education’s 2020 Nanga Mai Awards Student Award

The NSW Department of Education’s Nanga Mai Awards celebrate excellence in Aboriginal education in NSW Public Schools. We are delighted to advise our school community that Joseph Wilson (Yr 10) has been chosen to receive an Encouragement Award for the 2020 Nanga Mai Awards. His successful nomination from our school underwent an independent selection panel for this prestigious Public Education award. Joseph attends Hay War Memorial High School, Dubbo Distance Education and AURORA College (a NSW Virtual Selective High School, providing students in rural and remote areas the chance to study specialist subjects using the latest technology) to undertake his studies. He is an outstanding school representative and a proud community member. Joseph, his family and Mr Chambers will be attending the Nanga Mai Awards ceremony on Thursday, 26 March 2020, at the Sydney Opera House.

Senior chemistry Senior chemistry class attended the Charles Sturt University HSC Chemistry Day. Dozens of schools from the region attended CSU over the course of Week 4 to conduct experiments using advanced instrumentation and to attempt necessary practical investigations required as part of the HSC chemistry course. Students used a variety equipment including spectrophotometers, pH meters, atomic absorption spectrometers and titration equipment.

Each experiment involved constructing calibration curves using known standards and determining the concentration of compounds or elements in unknown samples. For example, the level of iron in Nutri-Grain was investigated to see if it matched the manufacturer’s claim. In addition, students also conducted an acid base titration to determine the amount of acetic acid in vinegar.

During lunch time the students listened to a lecture about life as a science student at university and rewarding career paths. In the afternoon students were treated to a variety of demonstrations involving exothermic reactions. A good time was had by everyone.

School Attendance Regular attendance at school is essential if students are to maximise their potential. Schools, in partnership with parents/carers, are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. While parents/carers are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their children, school staff, as a part of their duty of care, monitor part or whole day absences. If your child is marked absent at roll call, without an explanation, an SMS will be sent to the mobile number on the student’s record.

Parents/Carers are responsible for: Enrolling their children of compulsory school age in a government or registered non-

government school or registering them with the NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority).

Explaining the absences of their children from school promptly and within seven days to the school.

Ensuring that their children attend school regularly. Taking measures to resolve attendance issues involving their children.

School Staff are responsible for: Providing a caring teaching and learning environment which fosters students’ sense of

wellbeing and belonging to the school community. Recognising and rewarding excellent and improved student attendance. Maintaining accurate records of student attendance. Implementing programs and practices to address attendance issues when they arise. Providing clear information to students and parents/carers regarding attendance

requirements and the consequences of unsatisfactory attendance.

If your child is absent from school, for any reason, notification must be received by the school within 7 days, otherwise the absence will remain “unjustified”. This could affect any Government payments you or your child receives.

Students signing out and back during the lunch break Parents and carers who have signed the lunch pass permission note are encouraged to remind their child to follow school procedures. Your child needs to sign out of school and return to school during the lunch break via the front office.

Parents and carers are responsible for their child once the child leaves the school grounds. There is no recess permission note at the school.

The HWMHS P & C provides school canteen which operates every school day. We encourage all parents and carers to have their child use the school canteen at recess and lunch to ensure the school maintains a canteen operating five days a week during the school term.

Contact details It is very important to us that we have accurate and up-to-date details for you and your child so that we can communicate important information and maintain student records.

It is particularly important in case of emergency that this information is correct, including the details of your preferred emergency contacts.

School jacket Last year the students decided on a school jacket as the school did not have a jacket as part of the school uniform. The school and Hay War Memorial High School P & C supported the students decision making. This style of jacket is called a "softshell jacket". It has two outside zipper pockets and one inside zipper pocket. The jacket has one main zipper at the front. We are offering parents/carers the opportunity to purchase an optional school jacket for their child. These are available in sizes ranging from 12 to XL and all sizes cost $72.00. Our jacket features the school logo on the front. To order a jacket, please fill out the form below and return to the office by Friday 20 March 2020. Please note this is a one-off bulk order and no further orders will be taken this year. Please complete the tear off slip at the bottom of this page and return it with your cheque/cash/POP payment to the front office. Please make cheques payable to Hay War Memorial High School. Please note that this jacket is an optional item of our school uniform. Mr Yvan Chambers, Principal. ———————————————————————————————————–———————————
