A project involving the rejuvenation of Pàirc an Phobail in Portlaoise hascommenced this month. The first phase of work involves the installation ofan outdoor classroom and natural play features in the park.

o This is the first of a series of initiatives planned in the coming months to

rejuvenate the Peoples Park in Portlaoise.

o The next phase of works will include the installation of a Woodland Walk, an

Orienteering Trail and the refurbishment of the playground.

o It is envisaged that the outdoor classroom together with the woodland walk

(which will contain an educational tree trail) will provide local schools with an

excellent location for nature trails and an opportunity to observe local wildlife.

o With funding from Laois County Council , the Irish Wildlife Trust have already

facilitated two workshops with local primary and secondary school children

and the feedback from teachers and students alike has been extremely

positive.

o Indeed the wildlife surveys conducted by the children at these workshops are

being used for new signage which will be erected in the coming months as

part of the improvements to the park entrance.

o The Peoples Park in Portlaoise is currently used by a significant number of

people from the town but it is envisaged with the completion of these new

initiatives that the Park will be restored as a focal point for the town and be an

attractive destination for visitors to the town.

o Some of these works will require additional closures of the Park in the coming

months for Health & Safety reasons.

o Every effort will be made to minimise any disruption to park users.

NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK IS A PART OF EUROPEAN HERITAGE

DAYS WHICH IS CELEBRATED IN OVER 40 COUNTRIES ACROSS

EUROPE. IN 2015 23 COUNTRIES HAVE AGREED TO COME TOGETHER

TO SHARE A COMMON THEME TO HELP RAISE THE PROFILE AND

AWARENESS OF THE VALUE OF INDUSTRIAL AND DESIGN HERITAGE

TO PEOPLE ACROSS EUROPE.
