• “Kingdom of heaven” = the eternal kingdom, eternal reward cp. Mt 5:11-12

• The present kingdom (church) that will eventually be delivered up to the Father1 Cor 15:24-26

• The everlasting kingdom whose entrance is “supplied” 2 Pet 1:11

• In contrast to most funeral sermons, Jesus says not everyone will go to heaven• Refutes the doctrine of “universal salvation”

• “Lord” = an identity bestowed upon Him by the Father cp. Acts 2:36

• Yes, we should call Him “Lord” a title He deserves 1 Cor 12:3 8:5-6

• A truth to confess Rom 10:9 Acts 8:37

• There is only 1 Lord Eph 4:4• One cannot serve this “Lord” and

something else Mt 6:24• Yet, simply verbalizing this truth is not

enough Jas 2:19 cp. Lk 4:31-34, 40-41

• An appeal to all who will face Christ in the judgment

• “Great” works by whose standard?? cp. 2 Tim 3:17

• One can perform bona fide miraculous deeds and still miss heaven 1 Cor 13:1-2

• The very words of those Jesus references reveal their heart “we” [God is totally

left out]

Jesus Will Say “Depart From Me” To Some Mt 7:23

• He will exercise His right as Judge• It is His right to reject something He deems

“lawlessness” or “iniquity”• Lit. That which is without law• Law exists, but some act as if there is no law

• Our culture continues to try & “seize the throne” from Christ• We quickly quote Mt 7:1ff a perversion• Will we even put God in the category of those

who cannot judge us??

• God is indeed longsuffering 2 Pet 3:7-9• The commendable attribute of being

longsuffering doesn’t mean being inattentive• Jesus will inescapably be our Judge

cp. Acts 17:29-31 Jn 12:48

Doing The Father’s Will Gets One To Heaven Mt 7:21

• This is the concept of obedience• Compliance, submission to a higher will• Obedience has become an “offensive” word

in our culture• No one wants to be obedient, submissive

• So many think they do not need to obey• Athletes, politicians, corporate “big-wigs,” etc.• Even families are affected by this mindset

• Wives told “You shouldn’t submit” Eph 5• Children taught “You don’t have to obey” Eph 6

• So many think they do not need to obey• Even local churches are plagued by this

• “We don’t really have to do what the Bible says.”• “There are many things we do for which we have

no Bible authority!”

• So many think they do not need to obey• Even local churches are plagued by this

• “We don’t really have to follow the elders.”• “We don’t really have to deal with preaching if we

deem the conclusions appealing.”

• How do we reach heaven?• By subjugating our will to God’s Mk 14:36• By not just obeying…but by “obeying from

the heart” Rom 6:16-17 2 Tim 3:5

• How do we reach heaven?• By doing His will out of love for Him

• Our attitude determines whether or not we see His commands as “burdensome” 1 Jn 5:3 cp. Gen 29:15-20

Conclusion• We’re emphasizing reaching heaven…not

being on the right side of a doctrinal debate• We’re discussing the 1 thing that matters

• To miss this is to fail most miserably in life

• We must understand, practice this concept of obedience

Conclusion• Simply saying some “magic words” that

sound good won’t get 1 soul to heaven• Doing things we think are “religious”

without first checking to see if the Lord approves won’t get 1 soul to heaven

Conclusion• Submitting our will to the Father’s will and

doing what we know He approves won’t just get 1 soul to heaven…it will get every soul to heaven
