More Than an Outdoor Company SM

As of December 2020, Liberia was the first developing nation with border to border clean water with the help of over 130,000 filters Sawyer donated for use in the most remote, hard to reach parts of the country.

The impact on health and well-being when clean water is accessible is life changing. Within two weeks, families in Liberia saw reductions in waterborne diseases by about 95%, and we’re seeing similar results all across the globe.

When you purchase or recommend any Sawyer Product, you’re also helping protect millions of people with inadequate access to clean water. Thank you for helping us be More Than an Outdoor CompanySM.

The SAWYER Filter Lineup

Andrew Glenn

SQUEEZE | 3 ounces

The go-to for long distance hikers and backpackers. This filter is a workhorse and maintains flow rate the longest due to the larger surface area of fibers.

MICRO SQUEEZE TM | 2 ounces

Our most compact filter that has an impressively fast flow rate and all the functionality of the Squeeze. It will need more frequent cleaning compared to the Squeeze with less surface area of fibers.

MINI / DUAL THREADED MINI | 2 ounces

Our lightest water filtration system. Great for personal use on those short trips, or to have as an emergency prep item in your go-bag. The Dual threaded Mini works well in gravity set-ups with the on/off sport cap.

TAP | 3.5 ounces

Filters up to 500 gallons per day. This filter fits directly onto most hose bibs and taps. It’s great for emergency prep, boil alerts, RV’s, and international travel.

IMPORTANT INFO ON GASKETS AND OVERTIGHTENING

Sawyer filters only need to be finger tightened on pouches or bottles. The easiest way to damage these gaskets is to over-tighten the filters on to pouches or bottles. The threads on the filter are shorter than some people might expect and can be unintentionally over tightened in pursuit of a tight seal. This can damage or warp the gasket, cause it to fall out, or get lodged inside the opening of your squeeze pouch. The filter can leak with a warped or missing gasket. Internal gaskets and the threads on the bottom of the filter can also be damaged due to over tightening.

DO Support the collar of the pouch when screwing on the filter and only finger tighten the filter.

DO NOT Wring the pouch when tightening the filter and do not over-tighten the filter.

IMPORTANT INFO ON POUCHES

The Sawyer squeeze pouches are rugged but not indestructible. They can tear as a result of too much pressure being applied which happens when one tries to force water through the filter too fast or when the filter needs cleaning and is creating more resistance.

Clean filters flow at 1 to 2 PSI, so if you notice the flow starting to slow down, clean your filter. If you do not have a reasonably clean filter it’s easier to exceed 7 PSI and pouches are more likely to burst if you squeeze too hard. The more often you backwash your filter, the better.

DO NOT Wring the pouch to squeeze water out.

Proper Squeezing Method Rolling up the pouch is ok.

SAWYER Tap Filtration System

FILTER UP TO 500 GALLONS PER DAY.

Great for emergency prep, travel, or RV’s. Simply attach the filter to your tap, turn on the water, and filter into a clean container.

BACKWASHING OTHER FILTERS

TIP Use the included backwash adapter to backwash other threaded Sawyer filters on your tap or hose bib.

IMPORTANT INFO ON BACKWASHING

We do not recommend using the filter at full force on your faucet or spigot/hose bib. Slowly turn on the tap until you feel like the filter is about to pop off, then turn down the pressure.

Immediately After Backwashing: Remove the backwash adapter, flip the filter back around, and discard the first quart (liter) of water going forwards through the filter immediately after backwashing. This will flush out contaminants that may be in the filter.

WAYS TO USE

SAWYER SELECT™ Filters & Purifiers

1 Fill the bottle to the Max Fill line, then screw the filter back onto the bottle.

2 Squeeze the bottle in an alternating motion for 10 seconds.

3 Drink directly from the filter or dispense water into another container.

Wilderness Culture

The Sawyer Select™ systems combine Sawyer’s signature 0.1 micron absolute Hollow Fiber Membrane filter with a high-tech foam core inside the bottle to remove virtually all contaminants found in fresh water, including heavy metals, viruses, chemicals, pesticides, bacteria, and protozoa. They also improve taste and odor.

HOW THEY WORK:

A combination of activated carbon and other proprietary ingredients are embedded inside the foam core which has a usable surface area 50 times greater than traditional carbon block filters. This results in higher removal rates of contaminants than any portable filter or purifier, with minimal effort and wait time.

SAWYER Insect Repellents

HOW MOSQUITOES FIND YOU

Ever wonder why mosquitoes are more attracted to some people than others? Researchers have speculated that human skin produces 300 or more chemicals, and every person is different.

Some species of mosquitoes are more aggressive than others, but all mosquitoes are attracted by carbon dioxide (exhaled breath), lactic acid, and many other human emissions. So, the mix your body is giving off may or may not be more attractive to a mosquito. There are many different types of insect repellents and by trial and error you can find the one that works best for you.

Permethrin treated clothing and fabric should be your first line of defense for mosquitoes, ticks, and many other insects. REPELLENT TIPS & TRICKS

For the best protection, after treating clothing and gear with Permethrin, apply a topical repellent to exposed skin.

Repellents create a vapor barrier atop skin which masks or scrambles the signals of attraction that humans emit. They make it tougher for mosquitoes to locate their target.

• Bugs bite most at dawn and dusk, and throughout the night. Be extra bug-vigilant then.

• Camp or take breaks in breezy areas. Mosquitoes have trouble tracking targets in windy conditions.

• When using sunscreen and insect repellent, apply sunscreen first and let dry before applying a repellent. Typically lotion repellents work better with sunscreens.

• Eat garlic- mosquitoes and unwanted friends will want to stay away from you!

PERMETHRIN

Permethrin is the synthetic version of pyrethrum which is a natural insecticide that comes from the chrysanthemum flower. Sawyer permethrin is 100% odorless after drying and effective for 6 washings or 6 weeks of UV exposure, whichever comes first.

Repels and kills mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, mites, and 55 other insects on contact.

• Effective against mosquitoes which may carry Zika, Yellow Fever, Dengue, West Nile, and Malaria.

• Effective against ticks which may carry Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and the Powassan Virus.

• Permethrin will not stain or damage clothing, fabrics, plastics, finished surfaces, or any of your gear.

NOTE: Ticks take a breath about every 15 minutes, so they may not immediately fall off of treated fabric. They need to travel across about 2” of treated fabric to become exposed and start the dying process.

THINGS TO TREAT

Clothes, socks, tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, hammocks, mosquito nets, hats, bandanas, camp chairs, patio furniture, luggage, fishing vests, waders, bed sheets, car seats, cargo liners, bibs, workwear, canopies, and more. Since mosquitoes are better hoppers than flyers, adding more Permethrin-treated landing surfaces around you will improve your protection.

PERMETHRIN TIPS AND TRICKS

• Shake up the bottle really well and apply in a well ventilated area.

• Hand wash and air dry if possible to preserve the application. If using a washing machine wash on gentle wash and dry cycles.

• Storing garments in dark plastic bags between uses helps preserve the application.

• If it is too cold to effectively dry your treated clothing try placing them in a non-tumbling or pre-heated dryer 10 minutes after treatment

• If you’re applying waterproofing to fabric, apply permethrin after.

FAQ’S

How much is needed per outfit? The EPA recommends using 4.5oz of permethrin per outfit. An outfit consists of a shirt, pants, and pair of socks.

Is there a permethrin treatment that I can throw in the washing machine? No, there never has been. You do not want to dump excess permethrin down the drain so you would not want to apply it in the washing machine.

Do I need to wash my clothes after treating them with permethrin? After the treatment has been applied and fully dried, the treated clothing or garments will be ready for use and do not need to be washed.

Will permethrin interfere with waterproofing? No, permethrin will not harm waterproofing or damage any finishes. It just has a harder time bonding to waterproof materials that are more tightly woven.

SAWYER Picaridin Insect Repellent

Wilderness Culture

THE BOV SPRAYS AT ALL ANGLES

PICARIDIN

Derived from Piperine in pepper plants, Sawyer Picaridin is a synthetic replica of a natural solution that has proved to be very effective on mosquitoes, ticks, and flies. It is actually more effective on flies than DEET and is gear safe. It will not damage things like plastic, fishing line, lures, watches, sunglasses, and synthetic fabrics.

Sawyer’s 20% Picaridin spray is effective for up to 12 hours against mosquitoes and ticks, while the lotion is effective for up to 14 hours. Both provide up to 8 hours of protection against biting flies, sand flies, gnats, chiggers, fleas, and no-see-ums.

LOW IMPACT REPELLENTS

Sawyer’s eco-friendly BOV (Bag on Valve) continuous spray uses compressed air to dispense the repellent, so there are no propellents in the formula. It can be applied in any direction, even upside down unlike pump sprays. Once it’s used up, you can even recycle the can.

Aerosol repellents include propellants in the can weight, whereas BOV’s do not. So you get more repellent in a BOV can compared to the same size aerosol can.

Picaridin is effective against mosquitoes which may carry the Zika Virus, West Nile Virus, Chikungunya, and Dengue Fever. It’s also effective against ticks which may carry Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, tick borne Encephalitis, and the Powassan Virus.

The non-greasy spray and lotion have a pleasant low odor that evaporates when dry, and is a great option for the entire family.

Sawyer Picaridin is available in a pump sprays, continuous BOV sprays, lotions, bulk sizes, and single use lotion packets.

SAWYER DEET Insect Repellents

Mitch Pittman

For long lasting protection from ticks and mosquitoes, Sawyer offers a variety of DEET formulas to keep you protected.

Ultra30™ - The non-greasy, odorless Ultra30™ Insect Repellent Lotion combines 30% DEET with a comfortable liposome base for up to 11 hours of protection. The liposome envelops the active ingredient, DEET, and slowly time-releases it as needed, thereby extending the effectiveness of the repellent.

Controlled Release Family Formula - This 20% DEET lotion uses similar technology as Ultra30™ to slowly release DEET as it is needed. It’s an excellent choice for parents who are concerned about their kids’ exposure to DEET, particularly over the course of a week of backpacking or at summer camp. It’s also ideal for anyone who requires repeated use of insect repellent. Lotion repellents like controlled release and Ultra30™ are more compatible with sunscreen.

MAXI DEET™ - Unless you’re using a time-release DEET lotion, we recommend using 100% DEET rather than a lower percentage DEET spray or aerosol mixed with skin irritating alcohol. Instead of applying frequent applications of a lower percentage DEET, apply one long-lasting application of a higher concentration. Sawyer’s MAXI DEET™ is available in pump sprays, and the eco-friendly BOV (bag on valve) continuous spray.

EXTRACTOR® PUMP KIT

The lightweight, small, and reusable Sawyer Extractor® Pump Kit extracts venom and poisons from the bites and stings of snakes, bees, and more. The double chamber vacuum pump action is designed to provide powerful suction for the extraction of venoms and poisons without the need for scalpel blades or knives used in other kits. Because it’s a pump — not a syringe — it’s easy to use with one hand.

Successfully used for over 30 years, the Extractor® Pump is also a safe and useful first aid device for treating bee and wasp stings as well as spider, scorpion, fly, or mosquitoe bites.

It most effectively retrieves venom from extremities and areas of body outside muscle areas; effectiveness varies with the location of the bite.
