As we enter this season of Advent, I wonder where you feel most comfortable as we wait - being present or thinking about the future? What is the most important place for you to work on being - in the present or the future? Each of us comes to our answers from our own life experience. And, I know there are people in the world today who don’t want to think about either place. There is such darkness and fear for them in this world. Mary and Joseph will soon be on a journey where the world could seem dark and fearful. As they go from house to house in Bethlehem, waing for Jesus to be born, they hear person aſter person say “there’s no room for you here.” They will hear Herod say he is going to kill all first-born sons because of Jesus. I can see how Mary and Joseph might have become, despite all the joy around them in this new baby, filled with fear. This fear and darkness is so counter to all the pares and giſt-giving hullabaloo in this month. In the church, our hope is very present in Mary’s belly and also on the horizon with fulfill- ment of prophesy of a Savior. There is something important about celebrang our joy that is coming soon. And, Jesus calls us to listen to the outcasts, listen to the oppressed, listen to those who are broken and be present with them in this moment. We need one another this season. Chrisan community is about being present to one another in both the light and the dark. Jesus did not leave us alone and we come to- gether as church to be the body of Christ. A community where all are valued and loved no maer what. That is the message of this lile baby we are all waing for during this season – Love. As you wait in this season, I pray that no maer where you are that you know you are loved, especially if you have been waing to hear it. This lile baby coming into the world wants you to know you are loved now and in the future, no maer what the world says. And, Christ will wait and wait and wait with you unl you know that love deep in your heart.

What’s Advent all about?

Advent is all about waiting, right? We are waiting for our Savior to be born, the Christ child. It is the good news that God loved

us so much he sent his only son. In four more weeks Mary will deliver Jesus and I bet she is feeling this baby kick, thinking will I ever sleep again? Will I ever have a moment of quiet? When will this baby come? All the questions of a mom who is waiting for her child yet to come.

But, more and more spirituality books are focusing on being present in the moment at hand, not looking to the future. It is

the idea that we have plenty to be present to now without worrying about the unknown reality that lies ahead. We, as Christians, are called to be both. We are called to live in the present “good news” of God being with us and live in the hope of the resurrection in the future.

As they go from house to house in Bethlehem, waiting for Jesus to be born, they hear person after person say “there’s no room for you here.” They will hear Herod say he is going to kill all first-born sons because of Jesus. I can see how Mary and Joseph might have become, despite all the joy around them in this new baby, filled with fear. This fear and darkness is so counter to all the parties and gift-giving hullabaloo in this month. In the church, our hope is very present in Mary’s belly and also on the horizon with fulfill-ment of prophesy of a Savior. There is something important about celebrating our joy that is coming soon. And, Jesus calls us to listen to the outcasts, listen to the oppressed, listen to those who are broken and be present with them in this moment.

We need one another this season. Christian community is about being present to one another in both the light and the dark. Jesus did not leave us alone and we come to-gether as church to be the body of Christ. A community where all are valued and loved no matter what. That is the message of this little baby we are all waiting for during this season – Love. As you wait in this season, I pray that no matter where you are that you know you are loved, especially if you have been waiting to hear it. This little baby coming into the world wants you to know you are loved now and in the future, no matter what the world says. And, Christ will wait and wait and wait with you until you know that love deep in your heart.

O HOLY NIGHT is a worship service for anyone for whom Advent and the approach of Christmas brings pangs of loneliness, sorrow, and sadness. Join us Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. to acknowl-edge those feelings and still feel surround-ed by the compassionate love of God. We will gather in the Chancel of the church near the High Altar.

Poinsettia Delivery Among our parish’s many traditions, this is a very special one, sponsored by the Daughters of the King. Following services on Sunday, Dec. 11, stop by the Glenn Gallery to select a beautiful Poinsettia to deliver to members who are

homebound or reside in assisted living/nurse care homes. A special invitation goes out to folks with children – children can be spectacular ambassadors of the church! The name and address of a parish-ioner to visit is provided.

Faith & Film gathers Friday, Dec. 9. The movie will be Havana Instant. Faith and Film is a monthly opportunity for St. Luke’s adults to share a movie, snacks, fellowship, and a lively discussion of issues of faith raised by the film. All St. Luke’s adults are welcome. For location, contact Robert Sherrill ([email protected] | 470-355-1243).

Advent Quiet DayAdvent is a time of preparation and what better way to prepare for Christ's coming that to take a few hours off, unplug and be quiet, still, introspective. All are invited to do just that on Satur-day, December 3 from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The day will be led by The Rev. Tripp Norris and is sponsored by the St. Luke's chap-ter of Daughters of the King. Please let us know by Wednesday, Nov. 30 that you plan to attend by calling the reservation line (404-873-7777) or signing up online (stlukesatlanta.org/quiet-day). Lunch (sandwiches, chips, dessert) is offered for $7.

Dec 4: The Rev. Lauren Holder will share scriptural and theo-logical grounding for our reflecting on the Holy Family as a refugee family during Advent.

Dec 11: Meet the Chettri family—one of the refugee families St. Luke’s has come to know and walk alongside through our refugee ministry with New American Pathways. Staff from New American Pathways will also be present to share stories of what a refugee family encounters upon arriving in Atlanta.

Dec 18: You Were Once Strangers: Cathryn Marchman of Partners for Home is one of the most instrumental voices for homelessness services in Atlanta. As we reflect on the displaced in our midst and the growing insecurity of affordable housing in our community, Cathryn will share with us the city’s new strategic plan for ending homelessness. St. Luke’s plays a role—what is it?

Prepare for the Feast of the Nativity Through Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina | Dec 4, Dec 11, Dec 18 | Sophia Brothers PetermanLectio divina is a powerful means of reading sacred text for spir-itual growth. Join us as we continue the gentle, nonthreatening practice of group lectio divina with short selections of sacred text and poetry.

A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art | Dec 4, Dec 11, Dec 18 | Lane DuncanJoin us as we explore the story of the incarnation through the art of John August Swanson. We will delve into the familiar story of Christmas as told in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew in a whole new way. Each scripture passage is illustrated and interpret-ed in the stunningly detailed artwork of John August Swanson along with commentary by some of America’s premier Biblical scholars, names such as Dr. Thomas G. Long, Dr. Michael Joseph Brown, Dr. Carol A. Newsom. Each Sunday we will watch a brief video of biblical scholars engaging with the scripture and the artwork, and then engage with one another as we discover new insights for ourselves as we prepare for the coming of Christ.

You Were Once Strangers: An Advent SeriesSt. Luke’s will be asking the question, “Who is the stranger among us?” as we consider the Holy Family as refugees in our midst—a family displaced during a vulnerable time, seeking the kindness of strangers. In addition to thoughtful content during the Sunday School hour, we hope the exhibit in the Glenn Gallery by photographer Jim Loring will challenge us all to see strangers in a new light.

Christmas Pageant Fun

I can’t believe it is almost time for our beloved Christmas Eve pageant! It is such fun to watch the “heavenly herd” parade around the church. For the families of children under 5th grade who have not yet participated, there are a few details you will need to know.

First: the costuming takes place in the St. Luke Room from 3:15-3:50 p.m. There are various costumes for kids to choose: angels, shepherds, sheep, and some less conventional ones as well. There will be helpers present, but it’s great for parents to stay and help.

After kids have been costumed, they can be dropped off next door at the Wilmer Chapel for some coloring, storytelling, and other fun. Older kids tend to be fine, but it’s great for younger ones to have a parent or sibling stay. In fact, although participation of 3-and-unders is encouraged, it’s best to have a parent or older sib stay with the group for the entire pageant.

At 4 p.m., the adult shepherds will lead the various and sundry flock to the church for their big entrance. They will parade around the church and then gath-er up front in a wiggly, squirmy group to listen to Dan’s sermon. Finally, they will rejoin us in the congregation during the passing of the peace. The adult shep-herds will be helping with this sorting process, and as far as I know we haven’t had any families go home with the wrong kid yet! This is also why it’s best for the smallest members of the flock to have someone with them. This is such a special moment for our children to be intimately involved in our communal worship space. I look forward to seeing the children parade together!

Mustard Seed Garden Faithful take their shovels on the Road

"A big thank you to gardeners from St. Luke's who are beautifying the South Lawn Garden at Emmaus House!" wrote Director of Education Ann Fowler last month while the group was still working. They

blew, raked, and bagged leaves, pruned, weeded, dug up invasives, took down dead trees, and edged beds in one area before moving on to another where they raked more leaves, pruned dead limbs, and removed wisteria vines. These nine garden an-gels filled 35-40 bags of garden waste, and one bag of garbage. They are planning a January work day at Emmaus House to add soil to some bare places and finish the beds with mulch.

The Joy of Eating, The Fun of Cooking

A huge thanks to Peggy Foreman and Jane Long for the delightful cooking lesson and luncheon at our Act III gathering last month. Not only did they enlighten and enter-tain us - they arranged for Soiree to prepare the lunch!
