Sportsmanship is one of our key RIPPERS as it is not just used on the sports field but just about everywhere! At Limehills you could find someone using sportsmanship on the playground, playing sports or even at a chess tournament.

Sportsmanship is when you play fairly, include everyone, don’t be a sore loser or winner and congratulate others. You also shake hands afterwards and respect other competitors, players and other people in general.

I have had to be away from school quite a lot this week with meetings around “Communities of Learning” and the Ministry of Education Funding Review.

All of our teachers will be attending a Paid Union Meeting on Wednesday 7th September to vote on some really important issues. I am currently working on options to keep the school open that day, but this might not be possible.

Please let us know if alternative arrangements cannot be made for your child/ren on 7th September. This will help us to plan accordingly. A letter will come home next week explaining the issues we face. We would not be considering this action if it was not of the utmost importance. Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience.

EMMA KANE - BON VOYAGE!! Last time I checked in, I was finishing my final year at Central Southland College. I’m now halfway through my degree at the University of Otago and am about to start another new adventure. In two weeks time I’m heading to France to study as part of Otago’s Global Student Exchange Programme. I will be based in France’s third

largest city Lyon, a city that is rich with culture and history, and is the gastronomic capital of France. This is also the same city where Southland Stags lock Josh Bekhuis has been signed to play.

I have opted to live with a host family so I can fully immerse myself in the French culture and language during my stay. My host family live in an inner city apartment in Lyon, right on the edge of the Saône river, about 30 minutes from Université Jean Moulin III where I will be studying. At Otago, I study French and Economics, so I will be taking papers in French based around these two subjects. I’m really looking forward to this once in a lifetime cultural experience and all the challenges it has to offer.

As I prepare to leave the rural lifestyle behind, I’d like to wish all the farmers the best for lambing and calving. From Emma Kane

NETBALL TOURNAMENT On Wednesday last week a large group of Year 6 kids went to Stadium

Southland to compete in a Netball tournament. Limehills put in 2 teams - North and South, I was in the North team. North was in Pool F - they lost one closely fought game so that put them second in their pool to compete in Section B. South was in

Pool E - they lost 2 games and tied 1 which put them fourth in their pool to compete in Section D. At the end of the day North won Section B and ended up 9th overall and South got 6th in their section and 30th overall. There were 38 teams from schools all over Southland so we think we did well. My highlight was beating the Winton team in the Section B semi-final! We would really like to thank our coaches Mrs Cooper (South) and Mrs Hamilton (North). Thank you for teaching us skills and rules during your valuable lunchtimes and for taking a day off work to coach us at the tournament. Without you, we wouldn’t have been able to participate. By Jade Hamilton

Ronald McDonald Family Room Just a reminder to all the parents that offered to cook for the Ronald McDonald Family Room for week three, August the 19th. Your cooking will have to be at school before 12:30 so it can be packaged and sent down to the family room. Please remember to send the list of ingredients to school with your meal so it can be labelled so they know what it contains. Also if anyone has spare ice cream containers please could you send them along to school for us. Since our project is going so well we thought of giving some other people the opportunity to cook for the Ronald McDonald Family Room so that those that offered last term don't have to do it all the time. If you don't have the time to prepare a meal for the Ronald McDonald Family Room and you want to take part in it you can always just send in some eggs for bacon and egg pie etc. If you would like to participate in this project please get in contact with either myself in Room 8, Mrs Hamilton at the office or Mrs Smith in Room 7. Thanks again. List of parents cooking for week three are below:

Thank you and kind regards, Hannah and Georgia Room 8

TRIP TO THE OTATARA NURSERY On Saturday the 13th of August we went to a course at the Otatara Nursery taken

by Mrs Brownin. At the start we made weta hotels. They had holes on the side so the weta can hop in and stay for a while. There is no charge for staying there as it will be a good environment for bugs! Once we finished the weta hotels we looked for bugs in a wood pile - Josh found a weta and Lucas found a mealworm. Then we looked at the GIGANTIC worm farm (it looked more like a compost heap or a pig trough). The most disgusting part was that the lady who took the course put her hand in it (phew!!!)

Then we went into the bush and looked for bugs. As we went deeper into the bush we saw some stoat, possum and rat traps. The lady said that they had caught a rat, a stoat and a possum. We found a clearing and there was lots of rotten wood. It would be a safe environment for a weta. Along the trail there was a hut beside a pond - good thing it’s protected or else bang, bang the ducks would fall out of the sky like apples on a windy day.

Further along the track we saw Lucas’ favourite tree - the Rimu tree. We also saw Josh’s favourite tree - the Cabbage tree, don’t worry it doesn’t grow cabbages. The Cabbage tree is also Lucas’ 2nd favourite tree - now back to business.

Overall it was a fantastic day and we would recommend everyone to try it if you get a chance. It is a very good learning experience - also very fun. We would like to thank Mrs T for organising this trip for us, and our parents for getting us there. By Josh Cairns and Lucas Gill

My netball team had a great season this year thanks to our fantastic coach Annalise Du Plessis from Dipton. Our team has grown so much and we wouldn’t be where we are without her. She was a dedicated coach and made our season enjoyable. On behalf of my team we would like to say a very big thank you. By Mia On behalf of the Limehills Reserve grade B team I would like to thank our coach Fleur Anderson for giving up her time to make sure we were well practised and prepared the whole season. We had a fantastic year of netball and we couldn’t have done it without you. We’ve grown so much and our skills and teamwork have progressed. Overall we are so proud of our season and we wouldn’t have achieved as much without your commitment. Thank you! By Tayla Over the past term the juniors have had the opportunity to have fun at the drill hall in Winton. Two of the lucky hockey players were Emily Newell and Angus Collie. They said they loved having Mr Murray and the seniors to coach them through the season. They would like to thank Mr Murray on behalf of all the junior hockey players for teaching them how to play hockey rush and lots of other games. They also learnt lots of skills and had heaps of fun. “Thank You Mr Murray”

Dear Jasmine and Corina

My team would like to thank you for coaching and managing our team. If we didn’t have you, we wouldn’t have had as much fun . Without you it wouldn’t have happened. Our team certainly needed you to encourage us along the way. Again thank you. From The Limehills 4th Grade team.

Dear Adele and Hannah My team would like to thank you for coaching and managing our team. If we didn’t have you we wouldn’t have had a such fun and successful season or learned so much. Our team certainly needed you to encourage and help us along the way and never would have improved as much as we did. Thank you. From Ruby on behalf of the Limehills 7th Grade team.

Dear Mr Russell and Mr Cowie We would like to thank you for coaching and managing C Grade Blue. Even though we lost some games we still had the best coaches in the whole world. So thanks for teaching us the best skills and drills. We had so much fun with you and on behalf of Limehills Blue team thank you. By Cooper and the Limehills Blue team!

Last Saturday my rugby team (DLS) played our last game of B grade rugby for 2016. Of course we won, but did you know we finished that game with an unbeaten record for the whole season? My Mum said to me that you won’t get many rugby seasons like that in

your life! We played really well and didn’t get penalized too much (mostly me offside). We thought it would be a hard game but it wasn’t really a hard game because we did everything right. I can’t remember the score but who cares about a score when you’ve just won the whole rugby competition! We would like to thank our coaches Terry Forde and Dale Turnock and our manager Fraser Drummond who had to put up with us and we would also like to thank the referees who we couldn’t play without and the supporters that cheered us on. By Rylan Cooper

Dear Chris and Aaron Thank you for coaching us throughout the season. If it wasn’t for you we would not be able to play rugby. You’ve been great coaches for us boys. We have learnt lots of new skills throughout the year because of you. If it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t have played as well as we did. Thank you for coaching us this year. Thank you from Mash and the C grade team

THANK YOU FOR BEING AWESOME AND GETTING INVOLVED

Rural Bark up is happening at Balfour this Saturday, August 20th starting at 6pm at the Balfour Tavern with a Childrens section,

(Under 7 years, Under 13 years, Agri-Kids –Team of 3) This evening is a fundraiser organised by the Balfour Young Farmers Club with all proceeds all going to the Balfour Gun Club. We have some great prizes up for grabs and a chance for the children to get out with their pets. We have scheduled the children’s section for early in the evening so we can do their prize giving before the adult events begin. For those of you who are wondering what you have to do in a bark up, the dog gets up on the table (we will provide assistance for the children) and then the owner gets the dog to bark. All enquiries to Olivia Ross on 0278017868.
