ARTISTS TALKS Thirteen artists have been commissioned through Trails and Tales. They were tasked with responding to various sites and aspects of Heritage across our towns and villages through the creation of public art on heritage trails. This is a programme of free talks where you can find out more about the artists ideas and practice.

Talk: Jackie DonachieJackie has created artworks ELSIE, IRENE and JESSIE which are sited in three East Dunbartonshire locations, Lenzie, Lennoxtown

TRAILS AND TALES

and Westerton. The large-scale artworks made from powder coated aluminium and steel, commemorate the work of women in health and medicine who have associations with East Dunbartonshire – through education, working life or residence. As Jacqueline notes, ‘There are many stories locally, many tales, but there are few public dedications’. These works fill that void. Healthcare has long been a key industry for this area, from the large psychiatric hospital that occupied the Woodilee site for generations to the care homes and doctor’s surgeries that pepper Lenzie, Kirkintilloch, Westerton, Bearsden and Milngavie now. The mainstay of these workforces both then and now are women.

Talk: Roddy Buchanan East Dunbartonshire based artist Roddy Buchanan’s work has been installed in five sites across the region. The works take inspiration from political activist and community organiser, Thomas Muir who Lived in East Dunbartonshire in the late 18th century. Roddy’s work involves sculptural route markers that act as new metaphors about the life and story of Thomas Muir. An edition of five concrete sculptures mimic the shape of a eucalyptus seedpod, or as Australians call them gumnuts.

Talk: Alex Allan ‘Home’ by Alex Allan is designed as a series of sculptural way-markers across Milngavie. The form is based on the shape of old vernacular cottages that were once dwellings and places of work and of which many fine examples can still be seen in Milngavie. Blonde sandstone, once quarried at Mugdock and used in construction in Milngavie, has been cut to form the top sections of the sculptures. The

concrete plinths hold a mixture of cast-in and acid etched text referencing the names of former industrial sites and their workers. These sculptures act almost as memorials to lost local industries and specific buildings associated with them, as well as carrying the name of an individual associated with that industry

Talk: Trevor CromieTrevor has five public art works in East Dunbartonshire and they are located across three trails; Twechar, Milton of Campsie and Kirkintilloch.

Trevors work is inspired by Scotlands take on a Trig point which is a vanessa, a circular concrete obelisk normally located in difficult to reach locations and used as a beacon or way marker by walkers and ramblers.

The five art works interpret the historical landscape & industries that once thrived in these areas such as mining in Twechar and Campsie Ware Pottery in Milton of Campsie as well as local folklore.

Talk: Toby Patterson, Simon Whately and Dug McleodThis talk is about a collaboration between three practitioners, an artist, designer and landscaper who have made the art works Spider bridge, Stacks and Watch House Apertures. These art works are sited at Kirkintilloch, Lenzie and Cadder in Bishopbriggs and take inspiration from three unique stories which help inform the identity of each area.

These three stories are - Spider Bridge, a Victorian footbridge which connected Kirkintilloch to Lenzie and spanning the Bothlin Burn Valley from 1887 until its demolition in 1987.

The historical approach to lowland rasied bog landscape as a resource and 20th century attempts to industrialise peat extraction at Lenzie Moss.

The work of Sadie McLellan which can be found at Cadder Church and the innovative concreate & glass ‘Dalle de Verre’ process she employed in 1965 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Cumbernauld.

Talk: Rachel Mimiec Rachel’s scholar rocks in Milngavie, Torrrance, Milton of Campsie and Baldernock make visual and physical connections to the East Dunbartonshire landscape. Highly glazed, they have been secured onto larch posts and make reference to, and take inspiration from, the local geology and industries that once utilised the resources that the landscape provided. The work subtly acknowledges these natural resources that influenced the industrial history of East Dunbartonshire while referencing the cultural heritage of the clay and ceramics making in the area. Rachel’s practice often incorporates walking with local experts to understand a landscape through someone else’s eyes, knowledge and expertise. Through this engagement she was introduced to the geology of the area particularly the Lime burning and abandoned kilns of the late 18th century that are scattered in the landscape of Baldernock.

ACTIVITIES

Activity: Parent and Child Printing Workshop with Marion Smith Come and take part in a Blind Debossing workshop to celebrate beautiful book jackets made at the historic Villafield Press. During the session you will learn how to carve your design into a soft lino block (15x10cm) using specialist tools. You will then place special dampened paper on top of your artwork and run it through an etching press to come up with your design imprinted. This is a family workshop where parents or guardians participate with their child, both producing a piece of work.

Activity: Parent & Child Plaster Casting with Marion Smith In the casting workshop you will roll out a slab of clay and then use tools and materials provided such as lace, shells, buttons, nuts and bolts, spanners and cogs to press into the damp clay. All of the materials are removed leaving an impression in the clay. You then build strong clay walls around your work and pour liquid plaster on top. In about fifteen minutes the plaster will set like stone and you are left with a permanent cast! This is a family workshop where parents or guardians participate with their child, both producing a piece of work

Activity: Video and Sound Design workshop with Graeme RogerCome and learn some of the techniques used to create video and audio designs in these immersive workshops. Activity: Parent and Child design and cast your own art work markerAlex is creating a number of art work markers for Milngavie’s heritage trail which highlight local industry and the people who worked in these. He calls these his Home series. Participants will design their own art work marker by firstly creating their own replica plinth through casting techniques. Participants will be encouraged to choose rubber letters/wording of a message personal to them and their local area, which will then be applied to a mould. Participants will then experience casting the plinths from these moulds and create a small sculpture to adorn them. Using research material gathered during the Trails and Tales project to inspire them, attendees will be encouraged to consider their town, and their own place in it, to create a work that reflects these themes.

WALK PROGRAMME - NOVEMBERJen Binnie Trails & Tales Coordinator will be giving guided walks over November of each of the new trails. The idea is to test the walks with participants and gather feedback on heritage, locations and art works!

Book Week Scotland

18-24 November During Book Week Scotland people of all ages and all walks of life come together to share and enjoy books and reading. Now in its eighth year, Book Week Scotland features a national programme of events and activities and the theme this year is Blether.

Where Are the Women? with Sara Sheridan Writer, Sara Sheridan, will be speaking about the significance and stories of notable women throughout history and her landmark book, Where are the Women? which creates an imaginary Scotland where women’s history is given the same weight as men’s. This exhibition celebrates ‘Canal Craft’, a community led project embarked upon by The Forth and Clyde Canal Society to create opportunities for local groups along the canal to engage, utilise and promote this scheduled monument. This collaboration has involved East Dunbartonshire based groups GRACE, and LGBTI Youth Scotland – East Dunbartonshire.

ExhibitionsHeritageconnections:Kirkintilloch and Japan - reimagining Rita and Masataka Taketsuru

On until Thursday 3 October, this co-curated exhibitions explores the early 20th century life and imagery of Kirkintilloch born Rita Cowan and her Japanese husband Masataka Taketsuru. Led by maker, Elspeth Lamb, a group of participants from East Dunbartonshire Women’s Aid and senior pupils at Kirkintilloch High school, researched and responded to the stories and collections relating to Rita Cowan to make new heritage inspired images. Rita’s kimono, graphics, manga comics and photos offered inspiration for new ideas, explored through traditional Japanese techniques, such as Kappazuri (stencil printing), marbling and Japanese stab binding (a process of book binding). Works for the exhibition are highly personal explorations and include a folded concertina printed book realised by Women’s Aid participants, zines from students at Kirkintilloch High School and a specially commissioned new series of prints by Elspeth Lamb.

Re-addressing the archive is a co-curated exhibition at Kirkintilloch Town Hall, that is a collaboration between artist/maker Myra Ostacchini and Kirkintilloch’s Embroiders’ Guild. The collaboration brings together the highly developed needlework skills of the Guild, which has been in existence for more than 25 years, with Myra’s cross-disciplinary approach to textiles, as they explore objects and narratives from within the EDLC archives and collections.

From Lion Foundry patterns and plans, to fine lace and lappet work, temperance reminiscences and Campsie Ware pottery, the Auld Kirk Museum and Archives offered inspiration for participants to research and respond to this extensive collection of objects, artefacts and photographs. The resulting works offer a contemporary take on heritage, developing traditional embroidery skills into new and diverse forms. A newly commissioned film, drawing and textile work by Myra Ostacchini forms part of the exhibition.

Notes from the Wood by Barbara Sellars Saturday28September-31OctoberFrom Mugdock Wood to the oak woods by Loch Lomond to a small pocket of temperate rainforest on Mull, this collection of images was made over a period of four years. The images reflect what caught her eye: curious forms, fleeting impressions, seasonal change and a sense of the intrinsic grace and beauty of the wood. Underlying them is a long-time fascination with the woodland realm, both real and imaginary.

Come along to our free, fun-filled Bookbug sessions and enjoy rhymes, songs, cuddles and tickles with your child. Dads very welcome at all sessions, but our Saturday Bookbug For Blokes sessions aim to make it easier for male carers who are new to Bookbug. Book your place now!

Fàilte’ Gaelic Bookbug Sessions(Parent and child activity) 0-4 yearsIf you’re a Gaelic learner, or you’d just like your toddler to learn a new language, why not bring your baby or toddler to Gaelic Bookbug Sessions with the lovely Sarah? Carefully-chosen songs, stories, rhymes and props are used so that words are easily learned by beginners or non-Gaelic speakers. Sessions are free and there’s no need to book. Please check with venue before attending your first session as dates may vary.

Christmas Bookbug (Parent and child activity)0-4 yearsWe’ll be celebrating the festive season at two special Christmas Bookbug sessions – there might even be an appearance from the jolly man himself! Free but must be booked in advance.

Code Club 9-11 yearsCome and join us at Code Club where we explore a variety of coding projects using Scratch to create your own interactive stories, games and animation. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to those with some previous experience of coding. Sessions run in blocks and are free, but booking is essential.
