Nature2020 The Royal Pavilion & Museums is a partner in Nature2020, a year-long programme of events and activities to celebrate and highlight the natural environment of The Living Coast: Brighton and Lewes Downs’ UNESCO designated world Biosphere.

We are hosting a variety of free activities, events and exhibitions exploring the natural world and our own local environment across the year, look out in the What’s On for events marked A Nature2020 event.

Discover and celebrate 100 pioneering women of the 21st century in this major exhibition by acclaimed photographer Anita Corbin. These striking images capture an impressive record of female achievement, from beatboxing to bomb detection, computing to cricket, blast furnaces to boardrooms.

This exhibition features iconic portraits of celebrities, unsung heroines from across the decades, and ‘ordinary’ women doing extraordinary jobs. Including seventies rocker Suzi Quatro, Olympian Boxer Nicola Adams OBE, Lady Brenda Hale of the Supreme Court and football manager Hope Powell.

Queer the Pier Opens 22 February 2020 SPOTLIGHT GALLERY This community curated display peers into local LGBTIQA+ history. Celebrating the lives of the writers, artists, performers, activists and ordinary people who have made Brighton & Hove so fabulous, their stories are brought to life with film and photography, fashion and drag and oral histories.

Part of Be Bold, a series of collaborative exhibitions and events, programmed with Brighton & Hove’s LGBTQ communities.

Queer LooksContinues to March 2020 FASHION & STYLE GALLERYThis fascinating display of outfits and oral histories from LGBTQ individuals from Sussex, from the 1960s to the present day, looks at how individuals construct identities, both personal and collective, through dress.

Includes contributions from the comedian Zoe Lyons, journalist Sophie Cook and trans campaigner Fox Fisher.

Queer Looks is a collaborative project with the Centre for Fashion Curation at the London College of Fashion and has been supported with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Our Myths: A Museum Collective Display Continues to 29 March 2020OUTSIDE MUSEUMLAB Based on myths and folklore the Museum Collective created and curated this display of their own wood-cut prints, found Witch Stones and selected museum objects. The Museum Collective is a group of young people who meet regularly at Brighton Museum.

A Prince’s TreasureFrom Buckingham Palace to the Royal PavilionThe Royal Collection Returns to BrightonContinues to September 2021 During opening hours, Free with admission, members free

A spectacular loan from Her Majesty The Queen is on display at the Royal Pavilion. The culmination of a collaborative venture between Royal Collection Trust and the Royal Pavilion & Museums, over 120 remarkable decorative works of art that were originally commissioned by the Prince Regent have been relocated from Buckingham Palace and re-united in their previous setting of the Royal Pavilion.

Many of the works have not been on public display for over 170 years and are on loan to the Royal Pavilion whilst essential renovation works in the East Wing of Buckingham Palace take place. This unique project provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for visitors to see these magnificent items in their former home.

Find out more about the life and times of the exuberant King George IV at the George IV: Art & Spectacle exhibition at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace. Open until 3 May 2020.

new for april 2020 Queen Victoria’s ApartmentsThe original elegant 19th-century Chinese Export Wallpaper which hung in Queen Victoria’s Bedroom has been reinstated. The paper was removed by Queen Victoria and taken to Buckingham Palace in the 1840s but sections were returned to Brighton in the 1920s and hung in the Saloon until its recent restoration. Following specialist conservation and work to digitally reproduce missing sections the papers can now be seen again in their original setting. A new small display adjacent to Queen Victoria’s bedroom highlights her links to the building and the City.

Please note: to facilitate this redisplay the Indian Hospital Gallery and Queen Victoria’s apartments will be closed between January-March 2020

Listen to their songs and calls while Michael tells you their stories. Hear the sad tale of the Great Auk, the lost song of the Huia and be shocked by the scandal of the ‘Hastings Rarities’. Bring binoculars if you have them.

The Keep is an archive based near Falmer that houses the local history collections of the Royal Pavilion & Museums, part of Brighton & Hove City Council, the county archive held by East Sussex Record Office and the University of Sussex Special Collections, which include the Mass Observation Archive. We have a varied programme of talks and events, and everyone is welcome.

How to Book

You can buy tickets by telephoning the Events Booking line on 03000 290902 (Mon-Fri), in person at any of our venues, or online at www.brightonmuseums.org.uk. You can also email [email protected] if you have any queries.

A £1.70 booking fee may apply to some events. Tickets cannot be reserved without payment. Please book early as an event may be cancelled if too few tickets have been sold.

Free events cannot be booked in advance unless otherwise stated.We welcome donations to help support our varied events programme and to help towards the upkeep of our buildings.
