Makerspace Fridays are in full

swing at WWMS! Through their

Science classes, students visit the

Makerspace three Fridays out of the

month to engage in a variety of

STEM, hands-on experiences in-

cluding designing, experimenting,

constructing and inventing. In addi-

tion, students work with different

materials to learn how to create

something new. Essentially, they

are engineering new products. Digi-

tal resources, computers, software

and a variety of materials are used,

depending upon the specific pro-

ject, challenge and/or problem to

be solved.

Each class has two opportunities

during the school year to participate

in Makerspace projects through their

Science classes. In addition, Mak-

erspace activities are available to

students after school on Wednes-

days during Library Club.

When children are learning in the

Makerspace, they are effectively us-

ing higher-level thinking and prob-

lem-solving skills, which transfer to

all content area classes. The learning

possibilities are endless!

WHAT’S UP AT WOODROW

BMX Assembly

VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?? No, it's the Edison Bookmobile! This library-on-wheels stops at WWMS once a month to

share their books with Mrs. Haggard's ESL classes.

Students use their new public library cards to practice borrowing responsibly and to access materials that better match

their reading levels in English. "I like having a large selection of books and found one I wanted," says Harsh Patel, an

ESL student.

On September 13th, the 6th grade students attended an

assembly by presenter, Donny Robinson, of USA

BMX. Donny is a racer, coach, cycling advocate, as well as

a Bronze medalist from the 2008 Beijing Summer Olym-

pics.

The presentation, which included Mr. Robinson perform-

ing a jump over Ms. Cotoia and Mr. Scully, emphasized the

importance of perseverance in the pursuit of achieving

goals, possessing good character traits, and being true to

yourself.

Mr. Robinson encouraged students to take risks and

chances in life, as a path toward improving their skills, and

realizing their goals. Students were urged to be proud of

their talents and abilities without comparing themselves to

others, or putting others down. Emphasis was also placed

on building quality friendships based on caring and mutual

respect.

These themes support the character traits and values we

hope to encourage in all Woodrow Wilson students.

Edison Bookmobile

Mrs. Haggard encourages

all WWMS families to get

their free public library

cards and to make reading

a family activity. For more

Library.
