CALLIGRAPHY

Add a bit of rustic charm to your Christmas preparations with uncial script calligraphy – perfect for handwritten gift tags, place cards, envelopes and much more! Join Angela Reed, from Creative Calligraphy as she guides you from basic pen control through to letter formation, before showing you how to apply your new-found skills to some festive-themed stationery. All materials are provided and you only need to attend one of the sessions.

GLASS AND COPPER FOILING

Celebrate All Hallows in style this year by coming along to this coloured glass copper foiling workshop. Working with local glass artist Jayne Johnson, you will learn how to cut your chosen glass design to shape, before using copper foiling techniques to create beautiful Hallowe’en glass window decorations to welcome in the darkening days of autumn. All work created can be taken away at the end of the session, just come along ready to create - all tools and materials will be provided. Suitable for 14 years and older but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. You only need to attend one of the sessions.

We’re delighted to launch our new autumn creative programme across Sunderland and South Tyneside and we look forward to meeting you at one of our activities over the coming months.

AUTUMN WORKSHOP PROGRAMME

Our workshop programme has been designed to provide local people with the chance to take part in a creative activity on their own doorstep. The workshops are a great opportunity to meet new people, learn a new skill and have fun.

We advise booking early to guarantee your place as many of our activities have limited spaces. All ages are welcome on our workshops, but under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult.

PRICES

In order to make our activities as accessible as possible we heavily subsidise the cost to attend. There is a voluntary donation to help support the costs of the artists, venues, materials and transport. If you’re not able to make the voluntary donation you’re still welcome to join us.

WINTER CRAFT FESTIVAL

The Fun with Fabrics group (supported by The Cultural Spring’s Your Art) would like to invite you to their Winter Craft Festival. The festival is free and there’ll be ‘make and take’ activities, demonstrations of textile techniques, sales of the groups own creations, refreshments and even a tombola! New members are welcome to come along and join in.

LEARN HOW TO CREATE A PODCAST

Are you interested in creating your own podcast? We are running a masterclass to explore this popular way of storytelling. You will go through the basic requirements that will enable you to plan, produce and publish your podcast. Topics will include choosing a subject, scripting, interviewing and editing as well as software and hardware requirements, publishing and promotion. No experience necessary just an interest in podcasting. You will need to attend both sessions

SONGWRITING

Always wanted to try your hand at songwriting? Come along and meet other aspiring songwriters and learn the basics of writing and performing a song. The session will be led by Liz Corney from The Cornshed Sisters.

INTRODUCTION TO STAGE MAKEUP

Join Theatre Space North East in this fun introduction to stage makeup session. You’ll learn how to create realistic bruises, wounds and gashes, as well as hairy warts and bursting spots! All equipment provided. Suitable for 10 years and older, but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

FESTIVAL OF THRIFT

SATURDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER

Come and join us at the UK’s national celebration of sustainable living on our annual trip to the Festival of Thrift. This full day visit will see you getting creative in artistic workshops, seeing live performances and you can visit the many different stalls or just come along for a fun family day out.

£8 per person

The bus will depart from The Customs House at 9am and then pick up from the University of Sunderland’s City Campus at 9.30am.

BE PART OF THE CUSTOMS HOUSE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTLocal people are invited to share their memories of The Customs House and join Creative Seed to help create a sea of silk-painted flags that will be featured as part of the 25th Anniversary event taking place from the 25th to 27th October. The colourful and vibrant flags will be positioned along Harton Quay where they will be illuminated and welcome visitors to The Customs House during the event.

The free workshop will be led by Creative Seed and takes place on:

Being a slug is hard. Everyone thinks you’re disgusting.

Slug and Caterpillar are starving, and the only leaf in the garden is just out of reach. Slug thinks they should work together. Get the leaf, eat the leaf, play a game, be friends. Caterpillar has other ideas. Slugs are gross, they’re covered in slime and they have terrible taste in music.Things get sticky.Enter Slug and Caterpillar’s world and sit in a giant garden to SQUISH, SQUELCH and PLAY your way through this hilarious, surreal show for 2 – 5 years and their families, told with a handful of words and lots of SLIME.

THE PEOPLE’S POWERHOUSE

The People’s Powerhouse conference is coming to Sunderland on 19th November at The Beacon of Light, Stadium Park, Keir Hardie Way, Sunderland, SR5 1SN.

This is a movement which exists to shape the debate around the Northern Powerhouse, to ensure that people and communities are at the heart of the Powerhouse plans.
