Our MissionPartnering with families and child development professionals to raise happy, confident children. Where Did We Get Our Name?We get this question a lot and the answer has three parts. Our founding mothers chose the name BANANAS, first, because their children were eating lots of bananas. Secondly, they sometimes felt that they were going “bananas” with the 24/7 challenges of parenthood. And thirdly, they wanted a name that was child-friendly, memorable, and in no way bureaucratic. As an interesting trivia fact, we began as a parent-led playgroup and our original name was “BANANAS: A Place to Find Playmates.” ParkingDuring business hours, the parking lot behind the building is for staff only. When attending evening or weekend events, you may use the parking lot. Daytime parking is available on the street. Be sure to read signs regarding street-sweeping days.

They also increase parenting skills, awareness of children’s needs, child development, foster an understanding of how to effectively support early learning, and reduce isolation.

Parent Education Series Turning Tantrums Around (3-Part Series)Some of the most trying times for parents are a child’s passionate, emotional moments. Tantrums, meltdowns, aggressive behavior, and whining can be overwhelming, and knowing how to respond can be a challenge. In this course, parents will learn tools based on the Parenting by Connection philosophy that can turn tantrums around. Instructor Julie Johnson will discuss how to set limits in a way that builds closeness and cooperation and also reduces family stress. You will learn how to be less reactive and gain an understanding of why your child “loses it” over the littlest things. The class will also include information about the science behind crying and its surprising benefits. Julie has been in the field of education for over 15 years as a teacher, trainer, and researcher. She has a Masters in Education with an emphasis in conflict resolution and peaceable schools. She is a Parenting By Connection–certified instructor and mother.

Directors’ Roundtable: Leading Toward ChangeCenter directors, you’re invited to the winter Directors’ Roundtable event to discuss how we can empower the next generation of leaders. We are all in different stages of professional development and it can be a challenge to stop what we’re doing in the present and plan for the future.

At this roundtable, we’ll brainstorm about how we can lead toward change by asking important questions. What supports do line staff, new center directors, or site supervisors need to grow and develop into administrative roles? What steps do we take to plan for our succession so programs continue to maintain and/or exceed the gains made in quality improvement, continuity of service, and organizational health? You’re encouraged to bring your resources, ideas, and questions to this informative roundtable discussion. Join us and share strategies for positive transitions and professional growth. This is a wonderful opportunity to network, build community, and learn from one another. A light lunch will be served.

STEAM Trainings (3-Part Series)Young children naturally explore the world around them with curiosity, intention, and persistence. As they get older, they expand upon their previous understandings to uncover new possibilities and experiences. In this training series, participants will learn how infants, toddlers, and preschoolers gain knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) through their daily routines and in play. The first workshop will focus on how child care providers can support children’s learning around these concepts. During the second training, information will be shared on how to integrate STEAM into daily curriculum for deeper learning. The final training will center on the role of the environment, culture, and materials for further concept development. Attendees will interact with a variety of activities and environments tailored toward infants, toddlers, and preschoolers to identify ways to incorporate notions of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics into classrooms or home settings.

Thu, Feb 9, 16, & 23 | 6:30 - 8:30 pmInstructor: Nikki BaumgartLocation: Oakland Room

Program Administration Scale (PAS)Center directors and administrative staff are invited to a workshop hosted by the Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF) in partnership with BANANAS and First 5 Alameda County. At this training, participants will learn about a valuable assessment tool called the Program Administration Scale (PAS). This will be an opportunity to explore the many ways this important scale can measure the effectiveness of leadership and management at center-based early childhood programs.

Attendees will learn about small changes that can improve the management and leadership of their programs. The focus will be on: human resources, personnel cost and allocation, center operations, child assessment, fiscal management, program planning and evaluation, family partnerships, marketing and public relations, technology, and staff qualifications. This training will provide information that can help center directors and staff ensure child care programs are doing their very best.

Integrated Pest ManagementThe Healthy Schools Act (HSA) now places a greater emphasis on safer pest management methods and mandates educational trainings and more comprehensive reporting. Child care centers applying pesticides are now required to establish an integrated pest management plan (IPM) and inform the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) annually about any pesticide use. Now, under the amended ruling, anyone, including child care staff, who applies pesticides needs to report the time, location, and amount of the product that was applied. Centers are required to also post this information online or to send it to parents, guardians, and staff so they can view pesticide management strategies and keep up to date with its application. In addition to these new regulations, anyone who applies any pesticide will need to take a DPR-approved IPM training, such as this one.

Creating Trans-Affirming Programs (2-Part Series)This series will provide tools for creating a trans-affirming child care program. We will explore the range of identities associated with transgender and gender nonconforming communities and discuss the many systemic barriers that transgender people face. Participants will learn to use culturally appropriate language and behavior for addressing and working with transgender parents and caregivers as well as develop an understanding of gender nonconformity in children. Facilitator Willy Wilkinson is a longtime cultural competency trainer, trans father of three, and the Lambda Literary Award–winning author of Born on the Edge of Race and Gender: A Voice for Cultural Competency. Interactive, engaging, and solutions-oriented, this workshop provides opportunities for learning and problem solving at all knowledge levels.

Tue, Feb 28 & Mar 7 | 6:30 - 8:30 pmInstructor: Willy WilkinsonLocation: Berkeley Room

The Ages and Stages Questionnaire-3 (ASQ-3)The Ages and Stages Questionnaire, also known as ASQ-3, is a parent-administered developmental screening tool used to identify any potential developmental concerns during the first five years of a child’s life. Through this workshop, providers will learn how to administer this tool and interpret the results. Participants will also learn how to support parents in the use of this tool and how to respectfully and effectively communicate with them about their child’s development. When we identify concerns early, we are able to support children from the beginning. The ASQ-3 allows us to give children a strong start so they are set up for a lifetime of success. A light lunch will be served.

Sat, Feb 25 | 9 am - 1 pmInstructor: Rainbow MarkellLocation: Oakland Room

The ASQ-Social Emotional-2 (ASQ:SE-2)The ASQ:SE-2 is a questionnaire and companion tool to the ASQ-3 that parents can use to help identify concerns about their child’s development. Designed for children five years old and under, the questionnaire focuses on social-emotional development. In this workshop, providers will learn how to use this vital tool and interpret the results. We will also discuss how to respectfully and effectively talk to parents about children’s development. To ensure that we are setting up all children for success, it’s important to be aware of developmental concerns as soon as possible. Once a concern is recognized, providers and parents can work together to support children’s individual growth. We hope to see you at this informative session! NOTE: In order to attend this ASQ:SE-2 session, you must have previously attended an ASQ-3 session. Online pre-registration required.

Sat, Mar 4 | 9 am - 12:30 pmInstructor: Rainbow MarkellLocation: Oakland Room

Let’s Talk: Language DevelopmentLet’s talk about language development! Did you know that 85 percent of a child’s brain is formed by age three? It’s a fact. That means that during infancy and toddlerhood children are developing at a rapid pace. It also means that during these key years, the more words babies hear, the more language they will understand. During this workshop, instructor Nidia Sanchez will address three main questions:

• How do babies and small children learn language?• What can children do with language?• Why is bilingual education so important?

Participants will learn how receptive language (listening and understanding) relates to expressive language (talking and responding). Additionally, there will be discussion around alphabetization, which is when children begin to transfer their knowledge of listening and talking to an understanding of reading and writing. The facilitator will also share suggestions and strategies to promote language development in young children. We hope to see you there!

Thu, Mar 9 | 6:30 - 8:30 pmInstructor: Nidia SanchezLocation: Oakland Room

Powerful Preschool LiteratureJoin us for Powerful Preschool Literature, a new workshop focused on reading and early learning. When we read to children, we are not only creating a special bond, we are encouraging healthy growth. Every word they hear adds to the complex building blocks that make up their developing brains. Books also have the power to help children work through social-emotional difficulties, such as shyness, anxiety, anger, or sadness. In this workshop, we will explore what types of fictional books are the most effective and how teachers and parents can share them with children to inspire independent problem-solving skills.

Instructor Nidia Sanchez will provide a comprehensive list of titles that you can use when working with children. We will discuss which books are best for specific concerns and how to present stories to children in a group setting or one on one. In academic terms, this practice is called bibliotherapy and it has the ability to build confidence and encourage self-regulation in young children. Join us to learn how to bring powerful preschool literature into your program!

Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale-Revised (ITERS-R)Designed to evaluate group programs for children from birth through 30 months, this important early learning environment rating assessment tool measures how well students are being supported in three specific areas: protection of health and safety, building positive relationships, and opportunities for stimulation and learning from experience. In order to ensure that children are receiving the best possible care, the ITERS-R considers the many interactions that go on in a classroom, including between children and the materials and activities in the care environment. It also looks at the interactions between children and staff, parents and other adults, and among children themselves.

Through careful observation, the ITERS-R allows child care providers to determine how to improve environments and encourage healthy child development. We look forward to seeing you at this informative training that will give you the skills and knowledge to ensure the children in your care have positive interactions with one another and the world around them.

Our HistoryAs women began to enter the workforce during the early 1970s in increasing numbers, the need for child care became a common and widely acknowledged dilemma. We evolved from a place for children and mothers to socialize and play to a critical network of information and resources that enabled parents to work without compromising their child’s welfare.

BANANAS was founded in 1973 by a group of volunteer moms who believed that everyone should have access to affordable child care, regardless of income. The mothers had a vision of a grassroots organization that would be based on the premise that parents are the best experts when it comes to their children. The organization would be rooted in the idea that families are able and capable of making the best decisions on their own when given supportive, non-judgmental information.

Help Support UsWe pride ourselves in the efforts that we have made to make our programs and services available to the entire community.

To ensure that parents and child care providers all have the same opportunity to participate, 99.9% of our services are provided at no cost. Parent education, playgroups, child care provider professional development, and child care referrals are available to anyone and everyone.

In order to maintain our current levels of service, BANANAS needs to raise funds. Please join us in supporting parents and child care providers in taking care of our most precious assets, our children, by making a donation today!
