K01 Mentored Research Scientist Development Award

• Provides an additional period of sponsored support in an area that is new to the candidate OR in an area that would enhance the candidate’s scientific career

• Doctoral degree, current PI on PHS research grant ineligible, U.S. citizen

K08 Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award

• Support to develop outstanding clinician scientist development award

• Clinical doctoral degree, former PI on PHS grant ineligible, U.S. citizen

Patient-Oriented Research

POR is defined as research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens, and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator directly interacts with human subjects. This area of research includes: 1) mechanisms of human disease; 2) therapeutic interventions; 3) clinical trials, and ; 4) the development of new technologies.

K23 Mentored POR Career Development Award

• Provides support for a period of supervised study and research for clinically trained professionals who have the potential to develop into productive, clinical investigators focussing on POR

• Clinical degree, former PI not eligible (except R03, R21), U.S. citizen

• 75% effort, 5 years, non-renewable

K02 Independent Scientist Award

• Support for newly independent scientists who can demonstrate the need for a period of intensive research focus to enhance their research careers

• Doctoral degree, peer-reviewed independent research support

• U.S. citizen, 75% effort to research• 5 years, renewable once

K05 Senior Scientist Award

• Support to outstanding scientists with a demonstrated high level of sustained productivity, and whose expertise, research accomplishment, and contributions to the field have been and will be critical to the mission of NIDA

• Must have long-term support and peer-reviewed grant support at the time of the award

• 75% effort devoted to research

• 5 years and renewable
