Welcome!
2017 will mark a significant milestone in the history of the Gippsland Art Gallery.
Late in the year the Gallery will launch its fully redeveloped premises, adjoining the new Sale Library and Visitor Information Centre. This exciting new facility will enable us to present exhibitions to a new standard.
In the meantime, as work progresses on the Port of Sale Cultural Hub, we’ll be making the most of the temporary facility within the Port of Sale Business Centre to bring you an eclectic program of exhibitions and events—featuring, as always, the best art from Gippsland and from around Australia.
2017 sees the return of the Gippsland Print Award. Following its hugely successful launch in 2015, the Award is sure to be even bigger and better this year.
During 2017 the Gallery will also host solo exhibitions by Owen Rye and Sue Fraser—two of Gippsland’s most admired senior artists—in addition to offerings from emerging talents Josephine Jakobi and Marlee McMahon. Two historical surveys presented mid-year, The Kenneth Jack View and Bohemians in the Bush, will be complemented by collection-based exhibitions Winter and Close Encounters.
All exhibitions will be accompanied by a full range of activities, events and publications.

South Gippsland artist Owen Rye is a maker of ceramic jars.
Rye’s woodfired ceramics express the distinct characteristics of the medium. While producing vessels in ‘families’ of similar forms, each jar is unique and presents different qualities. Rye challenges the attitude that woodfired ceramics are uniformly brown by producing eclectic jars with a wide range of colours and textures.
While having shown widely throughout Australia and internationally since the 1970s, Jars is the celebrated artist’s first solo exhibition at the Gippsland Art Gallery.

Sue FraserStorylines

Exploring the rich mythology of the everyday, the art of Sue Fraser is patently about people.
Her works are inspired by human encounters, enriched by a fascination with the narratives that are carried through generations in fairy tales, nursery rhymes and the mythology of individual families—not least her own.
Printmaking is the medium in which she explores and relates a lifetime of female experience—as a child, a mother, a friend and a wife. She uses the family as a springboard into her wry commentary about the world at large. In her latest installment, Storylines, Fraser presents themes that—whether or not we know it—will be strangely familiar to us all.

Close Encounters…with the Collection

Every artwork has a story to tell, if only we stop and listen for long enough to hear it!
Close Encounters invites visitors to explore a range of recent Gallery acquisitions to discover their individual stories and their meanings within the wider collection.
Each of the works presented within this richly engaging exhibition either presents or suggests a dynamism between opposing forms, where one subject ‘encounters’ another. The result is a series of exchanges between styles, forms and content with sometimes surprising outcomes.
Close Encounters showcases works by Michelle Molinari, Andrew Browne, Fiona Reynolds, Michael Young, Dianne Fogwell, Jim Paterson and Sanné Mestrom, aside others.

Josephine JakobiHalocline

Josephine Jakobi blurs the line between art and scientific observation in Halocline.
Jakobi draws on the patterns and rhythms of nature to create meticulous mixed media works, where ecological and biological systems are enmeshed within the fabric of the works themselves.
By creating work ‘from the point of view of an insect’, and by introducing actual organic material into each piece, Jakobi eliminates the distinctions between manmade and natural processes. The Halocline—where freshwater meets seawater—becomes the point through which a greater set of material investigations can be carried out.

Marlee McMahonOptic White

Enter a strange world of supermarket colours and ubiquitous branding in Marlee McMahon’s paintings.
Optic White—an expression commonly associated with toothpaste—is an exhibition that explores the power of advertising through brand recognition. McMahon’s paintings find a balance between abstraction and realism to uncover the growing saturation of retail imagery within our daily visual culture.
Optic White is an exercise in order and control, where the impulse for cleanliness and a ‘sparkling finish’ borders on the obsessive.

Winter

Step inside the world of Winter, where ice and snow become the harbingers of wonder and mystery.
Winter draws on a range of works from the Gallery’s permanent collection to explore the psychological and aesthetic dimensions of the darkest season. Through these works we experience winter not just as a seasonal chill but a complex and compelling state of mind.
Winter showcases a diverse range of works spanning painting, printmaking, photography and ceramic. While cumulatively exploring the condition of being cold, each work explores the individual facets of the season through means that are unique and engaging.
The exhibition features works by Raymond Arnold, Judy Dorber, William Breen, Kaye Green, Hiroe Swen, Gail Nichols and Stephen Wickham, aside others.

The Kenneth JackView

Kenneth Jack (1924—2006) captured the quintessential Australia through his paintings, drawings and prints.
Jack was renowned for intricate images of Australian cities, outback towns and vast panoramic views. Yet another side to Jack is reflected in the works that he kept in his private collection, which reveal the intellectual and artistic challenges that he faced.
Assembled by the artist’s son David, The Kenneth Jack View presents a range of works from the artist’s own collection, many of which are previously unseen, together with key works from the Gippsland Art Gallery’s collection.

Bohemians in the Bush

The Gippsland encountered by artists in the late nineteenth century was a wild and inhospitable frontierland.
In the age of Impressionism and the rise of a national school of art, Gippsland remained a remote and inaccessible region for most artists. Those who did make the journey were confronted by obstacles at every turn, at once impeding their pathway and providing awe-inspiring subjects for their art.
Bohemians in the Bush explores the stories and art of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Gippsland, revealing the work of many artists who are comparatively little known today.

Gippsland PrintAward 2017

The Gippsland Art Gallery’s biennial celebration of printmaking returns in 2017.
The Gippsland Print Award—introduced in 2015—is an open entry award exhibition that showcases the ingenuity and creativity of artists and this marvellously enduring medium.
The Gippsland Print Award is a $5,000 prize for printmaking open to all artists living and working in Australia, for prints that have been completed since September 2015. The winning work will be automatically acquired by the Gippsland Art Gallery.

The newGippsland Art Gallery
In late 2017 the new Gippsland Art Gallery opens its doors.
The inaugural exhibition will be like none previously seen at the Gallery. Integrating the work of almost one hundred national and international artists, this exhibition experience will take visitors to the limits of the human imagination.

Maffra Exhibition Space
The Maffra Exhibition Space is the Gippsland Art Gallery’s Access Gallery.
Adjoining the Maffra Library, the Space is available to rent for local artists and practitioners. The Space serves as a showcase for emerging talent in Gippsland, and a platform for established artists to present recent work.

Available throughout the school year, the Gippsland Art Gallery’s education program focuses on current exhibitions and the gallery’s collection with curriculum links to VEYLDF, the Victorian Curriculum, VCE and VCAL.

Using tailored discussion and guided workshops, explore the ideas, media, techniques, and meanings of artworks in the Gallery.
WRITEYr 7—Yr 10 & VCE
Investigate exhibitions through student focused discussion about how the content, style, media, and techniques contribute to the meaning of artworks. Students will use a variety of tasks to develop descriptive analytical writing.
MAKEK—Yr 10 & VCE
Develop and experiment with art-making skills and techniques in a range of different mediums, through hands-on workshops that engage with exhibition themes and ideas.

Teachers are invited to join us for a preview afternoon at the Gippsland Art Gallery, where the 2017 Exhibition and Education Program will be introduced and discussed. This will be an opportunity to network, discuss your schools and students’ needs and consider how to include the Gallery into your yearly planning.
EDUCATION MEMBERSHIP
Benefits of an Education Membership include bus trips to visit the Gallery, outreach sessions at your school and free Teacher Professional Development sessions.
Member schools and kindergartens can be part of student exhibitions, plus gain access to Gallery display areas and special programs.

Gallery Geckos
The Gallery Geckos is an art club for school children aged 6—14 years. Be involved in fun art-making workshops, learn more about art and about what the Gippsland Art Gallery does and make new friends.

Coinciding with the exciting summer exhibitions at the NGV, Melbourne, which include John Olsen: The You Beaut Country and Atelier: Viktor and Rolf for Kids, the NGV Kids on Tour program comes to the Gippsland Art Gallery on 24 January. This day will be filled with art-making workshops and activities, and is a great way to start your Gallery Geckos year.

CHARLIES’S BIG DAY OUTSaturday 4 March10.00am—12.00pm
As a tribute to Charles McCubbin’s (1930— 2010) passion for art, the environment and education, the Gippsland Art Gallery is proud to present the annual Charlie’s Big Day Out.
Children will work with a guest artist to create their own artworks inspired by nature. This event will be held at the Lakeside Entertainment and Arts Facility (LEAF) at the Sale Botanic Gardens.
Members only free event.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS
The Gippsland Art Gallery offers a variety of school holiday workshops for our Gallery Gecko members. Workshops are designed around current exhibition programs and are divided into Junior Geckos (ages 6 to 9) and Senior Geckos (ages 10 to 14).
In 2017 school holiday workshops will be conducted in the first week of the school holidays.
ADULT WORKSHOPS & PUBLIC PROGRAMS
Throughout the year the Gallery presents a series of workshops, talks and events for the general public. The popular life drawing series will return in 2017 as well as an ongoing series of floor talks.

Gallery Society
The Gippsland Art Gallery Society Inc. is the Gallery’s Membership Group. Formed to promote and support the activities of the Gallery, the Society is a great way to learn about art and become involved in the Gallery community.
The Gallery Society regularly hosts talks and special events, designed to enrich your enjoyment of the Gallery’s programs. Membership is a great way to meet new people, and extend your appreciation of art.

Permanent Collection
The Gippsland Art Gallery’s permanent collection is one of the great cultural assets of the region.
Comprising over 1,500 objects, the collection documents the development of art in Gippsland. In addition the collection has many important works of national significance.
Since its establishment in 1965, the focus of the collection has been Gippsland and the natural environment. Works range in materials from paintings, sculpture, and prints, through to glass, ceramics, and textiles.
