Anders (Not A Single Doubt),

the short-priced favourite to add a Group 1

to his record next week, in the latest move by

Aquis Farm to cash in on its plethora of stakes-

The deal, confirmed by Widden Stud’s

Antony Thompson yesterday, will see the

existing syndicate retain shares in the Ciaron

Maher and David Eustace-trained colt, a last-

start winner of the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3,

1100m).

The dominance of that performance, in

which the colt showed blistering speed to lead

and win by three and a quarter lengths, backed

up the demolition of his rivals in The Rosebud

(Listed, 1100m) first-up when scoring by four and

Thompson last night declared that

Anders’ profile was one that had served Widden Stud well for decades

and was pleased to be able to partner with Aquis to stand the colt at the

famous Hunter Valley farm.

“He’s a very fast horse and a lovely physical and he’s got a super

pedigree and a horse we can really do a lot with. I think he’ll be a great

addition and we’re really excited about him,” Thompson told ANZ

Bloodstock News.

“He’s certainly done enough at this stage to earn his spot at Widden

and everything’s a bonus from here, but his figures and what he’s shown

so far gives us the indication that

he’s pretty special.

“We’re happy to be involved

with him through the rest of his

racing career and then certainly

his stud career. We’ve seen

enough to know he’s going to

be a really exciting prospect and

has what it takes to be a good

stallion.”

Anders, whose value is

believed to have been placed at

north of $10 million, is the $2.50

favourite for Friday week’s A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley

and is high up in calculations for the $15 million Everest (1200m).

The colt’s spring campaign could culminate in the Coolmore Stud

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on October 31 if he continues to

maintain his stellar form which has stretched to four straight wins, two

either side of a spell.

“He’s been a special colt for us from the time we saw him (as a yearling).

We always thought he was top drawer and he’s proven that now,” Aquis

Farm’s managing director Shane McGrath told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“He’s going to Widden and there’s no more iconic stallion farm in

Australia and for Aquis and all the other owners associated with them, it’s

a privilege and we’re really looking forward to the journey.”

Interest had already been shown in Anders for a slot in The Everest

from multiple parties, but Aquis could hold the ace hand if connections

decided the colt should take on older horses in the $15 million race at

Randwick on October 17.

McGrath revealed: “Prior to negotiations with Widden and a number

of other major farms, we had three independent approaches in relation

to the slot.

“As it is now, it’s a job for Antony Thompson and Widden as they are

the managing owners and we’ll respect their decision and I’m sure he

will make the best decision not only for Anders but the entire ownership

group.”

While a lot hinges on the Moir result,

the late summer-autumn campaign of the Melbourne and Sydney sprint

races, such as the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), Oakleigh

Plate (Gr 1, 1100m), The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) and the T J Smith Stakes (Gr

1, 1200m), could all be considered.

A trip overseas for the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) and Diamond

Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot next year could also be on the cards

if Anders’ form holds up.

“All those things are on the table. He’s effective on all sorts of ground,

he’s got a very high cruising speed, so they do look like nice options for

him in time, but we will work with Ciaron and David and map out a plan

from there,” Thompson said.

“At this stage, we’ll look to the Moir and weigh up our options after that.”

In recent months, Aquis Farm has sold down its holding in this year’s

star juvenile, the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan (Not

A Single Doubt), and parted with Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner

Prague (Redoute’s Choice) in another significant transaction.

Both colts, who were also part-owned by Phoenix Thoroughbreds,

were purchased by Kia Ora Stud.

Aquis also has Holyfield (I Am Invincible), who won the Ming Dynasty

(Gr 3, 1400m) at his most recent start, and Saturday’s Dulcify Quality

(Listed, 1500m) winner Mo’unga (Savabeel) racing under its banner. Both

could be headed to Group 1 three-year-old races this campaign which

would further boost their appeal as stallion prospects.

When questioned as to the reasoning for Aquis’ decision to sell a

controlling interest in another high-class colt - one of a number of an

enviable crop selected at the 2019 yearling sales - McGrath said that it

fitted owner Tony Fung’s brief.

“The whole business mantra has always been to go and select well-

bred colts with the potential to be stallion prospects and we’ve been

fortunate that not only have we had Farnan and Prague but Anders as

well,” he said.

“The market has identified that the selection process and the systems

we have in place is producing these horses. For the longevity of the market,

they’ve got to be appreciative of what we’ve done and what we’re trying to do.”

Selected by McGrath and purchased in partnership with Ciaron

Maher Racing for $670,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale

when offered by Arrowfield Stud, Anders is a half-brother to the stakes-

placed sprinter Battleground (Snitzel).

His dam Madame Andree (War Emblem) was unraced but further

back in Anders’ pedigree hails Grade 1 winner Exciting Story (Diablo),

and Listed winners Strong Memory (End Sweep), Sweeping Story (End

Sweep) and Diablo’s Story (Diablo).

Not A Single Doubt, who was pensioned earlier this year for health

reasons, is the sire of 73 stakes winners and has three sire sons, Aquis’

Dubious, Newgate Farm’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Moir

Stakes winner Extreme Choice and Squamosa who stands at Sun Stud in

Victoria.

Yulong swoops on Tofane for EverestGroup 1-winning mare Tofane (Ocean Park)

yesterday became the latest runner to secure

a slot to contest next month’s $15 million The

Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick. Tofane

will take her chance in the world’s richest turf

race partnered with slot holder Yulong, and

her trainer Mike Moroney is excited by the

opportunity. “It’s a big thrill for us to partner

with Yulong on this,” Moroney said. “Mr Zhang

purchased our Group 1 winner Alabama

Express earlier this year and he is just starting

his stud career for him here in Victoria and I’m

sure Tofane will do us all proud.” Moroney said

the five-year-old had come out of her first-up

run in last Saturday’s Bobbie Lewis Quality (Gr

2, 1200m) at Flemington in great shape. “I was

more than satisfied with her effort under the

circumstances,” Moroney said. “She had top-

weight, the race wasn’t really run to suit so I

thought for her to be beaten under half a length

was an excellent run. She won the All Aged

Stakes at Randwick in April after good efforts

in the Galaxy and the T J Smith and she beat

Gytrash home over 1200 metres in Adelaide last

year so she deserves a crack at a race like The

Everest.”

12 for Dawn ApproachFormer Darley shuttler Dawn Approach (New

Approach) sired his 12th individual stakes

winner when Winning Partner (5 g ex Lady Frere

by Johannesburg) landed yesterday’s Balaklava

Cup (Listed, 1600m). The Tony and Calvin

McEvoy-trained five-year-old was winning

for the fifth time in 22 starts when beating

Analytica (Shocking) by a length and a half.

Savatoxl (Kuroshio) was a further length and a

quarter away in third. A $110,000 purchase at

the 2017 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale

by McEvoy Mitchell Racing, Winning Partner

is the third winner from three foals out of Lady

Frere (Johannesburg), who herself is a half-

sister to dual Listed winner General Peekay

(General Nediym). Dawn Approach stood at

Darley’s Kildangan Stud in Ireland for a fee of

€10,000 (approx AUD$16,200) in 2020.

Perseverance key to KoldingChris Waller is adamant George Main Stakes

(Gr 1, 1600m) contender Kolding (Ocean Park)

is going as well as ever and just needs the right

conditions to get back to winning ways. The

eight-time winner failed to place in five starts

in the autumn and again when he resumed to

finish down the track behind stablemate Verry

Elleegant (Zed) in the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

but he hinted at a return to form when finishing

second behind all-the-way winner Dreamforce

(Fastnet Rock) in the Tramway Stakes (Gr 2,

1400m) at Randwick on September 5. "He's

had genuine excuses. Wet tracks, wide draws,

running left-handed and he was back to much

better (last start)," the champion trainer said.

"Nothing was wrong. That's what I figured out.”

Caulfield Cup likely for Verry ElleegantVerry Elleegant will again be in opposition

against Kolding on Saturday as the five-year-

old has her latest start on the path towards

the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). Another tilt

at the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) had been under

consideration for the mare but connections

have now focused their attention on the

October 17 contest instead. “With what has

transpired with Aidan O'Brien coming and

some of these other horses now running in

the Cox Plate, it makes our decision so much

easier," co-owner Brae Sokolski told Racing.

com. "I'd say she's definitely going to the

Caulfield Cup. The Cox Plate was looking a

little bit shallow about four weeks ago but

now with what Russian Camelot did last week

and with the internationals now confirmed

for the race, it has further galvanised our

conviction that the Caulfield Cup is the right

race this year. We thought with everything

that's gone on this year that we were going to

have an easier run at these big races, but it

now looks as though they will be as tough as

ever."

Mother hoping for back-to-back winnersDaniel Bowman believes Begood Toya

Mother (Myboycharlie) is showing all the

right signs to post a repeat performance of his

heroics from last year and take out Saturday’s

Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at

Caulfield. In his final lead-up run 12 months

ago, Begood Toya Mother finished sixth in

the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and was

beaten 2.85 lengths. This year he produced

the same result when sixth and exactly the

same margin behind Behemoth (All Too

Hard). Last year he started from barrier three

and on Saturday it will be barrier four. There

is, however, one big difference, as last year

Begood Toya Mother carried 52 kilograms

and on Saturday he will carry six kilograms

more. "He needs to be as good and maybe a

bit better than last year which I think he is,"

Bowman said. "He's a stronger horse but he's

going to need to be with his extra weight.

He's going super. He had his last gallop at

Casterton on Tuesday and he's as good as

he can be." The Warrnambool trainer was

pleased with Begood Toya Mother's run in

the Memsie Stakes when he was fired up

after being taken on for the lead by Streets

Of Avalon (Magnus). "I thought he was still

going to run third with 50 metres to go but he

just tired. That run really brought him on. I

couldn't have him in better condition.”

German right for Front Page rideApprentice Lewis German has declared himself

fit to ride at Caulfield on Saturday where he is

set to partner The Kosciuszko (1200m) favourite

Front Page (Magnus) in the 1100-metre sprint.

German suffered bruising to his right foot after

he was dislodged from Miss Madec (Kermadec)

at Wodonga on Tuesday. He did not ride for

the remainder of that meeting, nor at Bendigo

yesterday, but is seeking clearance to fulfill

his mounts today and tomorrow before his

Caulfield commitments. Front Page has won

four of his six starts, including the Creswick

Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington in

June. It Is understood that German has told

connections of the four-year-old he would be

willing to quarantine in Sydney for 14 days

before the October 17 race.

Kisukano to take on older horsesKisukano (Bel Esprit) will take on her elders for

the first time in her career when she lines up

in Saturday’s Pink Ribbon Cup (1300m) at the

Gold Coast. The winner of six of her eight starts

to date, Kisukano blitzed her rivals on her most

recent outing at Eagle Farm on August 29 when

setting a new track record. “She’ll be out of her

comfort zone going up against older mares for

the first time and stepping up to 1300 metres,”

trainer Michael Nolan told racingqueensland.

com. “I thought her last win was outstanding

and it took a couple of days for her to get over it

but she was entitled to after breaking the track

record.”

No Moir for HustleBrooklyn Hustle (Starspangledbanner) will

bypass the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee

Valley on September 25 and instead contest

the following day’s Testa Rossa Stakes (Listed,

1200m) at Caulfield, co-trainer Dean Krongold

has revealed. “I think we are bypassing the Moir

and stepping her up to 1200 metres and she will

run in the Testa Rossa at Caulfield in two weeks’

time,” Krongold, who trains in partnership with

Jason Warren, told Racing.com. “We think she

is better suited to the 1200 metres and it looks

like it’s going to be a pretty strong Moir and she

is going to need a lot of luck. She’s an exciting

prospect and we want to capitalize with her

and then we can target her for a race like the

Manikato, which she will be better suited to.”

Redoute’s Choice colt bursts into Guineas contentionCambourne (Redoute’s Choice) kept his

undefeated record intact and the possibility of

a start in next month's Caulfield Guineas (Gr

1, 1600m) alive, with an easy win at Bendigo

yesterday. Co-trainer Mick Price stamped him

as a "black-type horse coming soon" after the

colt posted his second success when having

little trouble accounting for his rivals to win over

1300 metres. Price, who trains in partnership

with Michael Kent Jnr, now faces the dilemma

of how to get Cambourne into the Guineas

field. The meeting at Bendigo carried prize-

money equivalent to a midweek metropolitan

program, but Price doubted whether that

would be enough to get him into a Group 1

race. His other option is to run Cambourne

in Saturday week's Caulfield Guineas Prelude

(Gr 3, 1400m) although he is concerned that

starting him again in ten days could be too

soon for the inexperienced colt. "He's a lovely

horse with a great temperament and the more

racing the better for him. He's going to make a

beautiful 1600-metre horse," Price said.

Deniki holds on at Warwick FarmThe lightly-raced filly Deniki (Not A Single

Doubt), a close relation to Group 2 winner Menari

(Snitzel), fought back after being headed to land

her maiden win at Warwick Farm yesterday.

Having her third start, the Mark Newnham-

trained three-year-old showed good battling

qualities to post a narrow victory over the more

experienced Osamu (Exceed And Excel) in the

Vinery Stallions Plate (1100m). "She got the job

done and she beat a nice colt," Newnham said.

"As long as she learns to contain that speed she is

going to make a really nice filly."

Peel fractures hipBrisbane apprentice Wendy Peel was preparing

to undergo surgery yesterday afternoon after

suffering a broken hip in an incident which

occurred during the jump-outs the previous

day. “One day you can be on the biggest high,

the next you can be lying flat on your back in

hospital with a broken hip,” the rider tweeted.

Moor suspendedDaniel Moor was charged with careless riding

and then subsequently cleared by the stewards at

Wodonga on Monday - but still left the racecourse

with a 12-meeting suspension. Moor was initially

charged with careless riding for his ride on

Raphael (Not A Single Doubt) in the fourth race on

the card, however, after hearing all the evidence,

the stewards could not be satisfied the incident

could be attributed to carelessness on his behalf

and withdrew the charge. Despite that, Moor

departed Wodonga with a 12-meeting careless

riding suspension that was handed to him after

the completion of a deferred inquiry into a race

run at Pakenham on August 31. The ban will

commence following Saturday's Caulfield card

and expire on September 30.

Pregnant Meech to return next yearDual Group 1-winning jockey Linda Meech

yesterday announced she intends to return to race

riding next year after confirming she is pregnant

with her first child. The winner of 1715 races was

last seen in action on April 12 when completing a

double at Stawell. Meech became the first female

rider to win the Victorian jockeys' premiership

when successful in 2018/19.

Magic Millions race named in honour of SubzeroThe achievements of Subzero (Kala Dancer) will

be recognised as part of the TAB Queensland

Summer Racing Carnival, it was revealed

yesterday, when Racing Queensland released

details of this year’s Summer Carnival, which will

feature almost $20 million in prize-money and

The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday on

“The TAB Queensland Summer Racing Carnival

NEW ZEALAND

Mitigator’s challenge not lost on McKayPeter McKay is aware that Thorndon Mile (Gr 1,

1600m) winner The Mitigator (Master Of Design)

will have to be at his very best if he is to add to his

tally of wins in Saturday’s Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1,

1400m) at Hastings. “It was good to get the Group

1 win last year and a Group 3 with him but once

you are at that level, it’s hard to stay competitive

at that level,” McKay said. “(Group 1 wins) are

hard to get. Everything has got to be right on the

day. You can’t go in there expecting to be winning

or running close because everything has to be

going right, as we know.” The six-year-old gelding,

who also won the Eagle Technology Stakes (Gr 3,

1600m) at Ellerslie last season, finished third at

Taupo when resuming, carrying 61.5 kilograms,

and sixth at Te Rapa last start under 62 kilograms.

“I was very happy with his first-up run. His second

run the other day, Opie (Bosson, jockey) said

he knuckled a couple of times coming around

the corner,” McKay continued. “The track was

moving under him and he wouldn’t let down.

He’s pulled up really well. It was a nice lead-up.

The 1400 metres on Saturday is probably not his

pet distance but he has performed well at it in the

past.”

Melt heads to Ruakaka

Group 1 performer Melt (Iffraaj) will kick-off her

spring campaign in the Harcourts Tai Tokerau

Trophy (1200m) at Ruakaka on Saturday. The

daughter of Iffraaj (Zafonic) has not been seen

on raceday since her runner-up effort over

1200 metres at Tauranga last November and

her trainer Nigel Tiley is looking forward to

her return. “Melt had a nice break,” he said.

“She came back from Sydney and we gave her

one start just to make sure she was happy. We

put her aside while the tracks were a bit firmer.

She was ready to go when we had to go into

lockdown, so she just went out to the paddock

and then went down to David and Emma-Lee

Browne’s to do a bit of work on the hills. She

has come back in pretty good nick.” Melt has

a strong first-up record and Tiley is confident

she will be able to retain that strike-rate on

Saturday. “She races well when she is fresh. She

has won first-up on a couple of occasions,” he

continued. “I will claim with her, so she will

probably get in with 51 kilos, and with that on

her back she will be competitive.”

Talented Kelly Reneeto break maidenKelly Renee (Vespa) will be looking to secure

her maiden victory at Te Rapa when she

contests today’s SVS 3YO 1200. The Stephen

Autridge and Kris Shailer-trained filly placed in

four of her five starts as a juvenile, including the

Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and

the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Autridge said

she has matured as a three-year-old and he is

expecting the daughter of Vespa (Elusive City)

to improve from her first-up fourth placing

last month. “She has matured a little bit,” he

said. “Every time that she ran as a two-year-old

she got better, so we are hoping we are going

to go through the same process this time. She

hasn’t had a run for a little while, so she will

improve with it. It is the first time she has had

a reasonable track (Slow 7) and a reasonable

draw (8) for a while. I would like to think that

she will be running in the first three.”

National Breeding Awards cancelledThe 2020 Ebbett VW National Breeding Awards

has been cancelled due to the Covid-19

pandemic. “We are all disappointed the event

could not go ahead but we were left with little

choice for obvious reasons,” NZTBA council

member Shannon Taylor said. “The organising

committee had been trying to work around the

different alert level scenarios. We’d already had

a change of date and venue, but for the event

to go ahead at the standard it deserved, we

just couldn’t operate within the time frames

and uncertainty.” Over the coming week the

National Awards organising committee will

work on a solution to present this year’s awards

to the individual Group 1 winners. Tickets will

be fully refunded and ticket holders are asked

to email [email protected] with bank

details for a refund.

Inferno trials wellInferno (Holy Roman Emperor) has pleased

connections with a barrier trial ahead of a tilt

at the Singapore Guineas (Listed, 1600m) on

September 26. Inferno posted a dominant win

at his last start in the Singapore Classic (Listed,

1400m) and, with a gap of one month between

runs, trainer Cliff Brown decided a barrier

trial would not do Inferno any harm ahead of

his grand final next week. “There is a month

between runs,” Brown said. “As he is a lazy

trackworker, I thought he’d get more out of an

easy barrier trial. He did enough without doing

too much, which is just fine. He was good, he

was not out to break any record, and he still ran

on well.”

Lim hopeful of finding key to TakhiJason Lim is confident he is edging closer to

finding the key to Takhi (Bahamian Squall) who

will be chasing a second win when he lines up

in Saturday’s Class 4 race over 1600 metres at

Kranji. “We may need to find out more about

Takhi, but I get the feeling he may be a horse

who will run a mile or above,” the trainer said.

“I used to run him in sprint races, but I think his

first-up win over 1200 metres was also a sign he

needs further. I think we got the right distance

for Takhi now. He’s also become more mature.”

Lim has high hopes for Takhi this Saturday and

beyond. “He’s drawn nicely in two. I think he’s

got a good chance this weekend. He’s quite

a progressive horse and without getting too

ahead of myself, if he keeps going through his

grades, I may look at a feature race for him

when he is four years old next year. One race

at a time, though, let’s see how he goes this

Saturday first.”

20 for Pride Of DubaiPride Of Dubai (Street Cry) sired his 20th

individual winner when Malaysian (2 f

ex Booker by Mastercraftsman) built on a

promising debut to score at the second time of

asking in a mile maiden at Cork yesterday. The

Jessica Harrington-trained filly, who finished

eight lengths behind subsequent Group 1

winner Shale (Galileo) on her first outing, beat

the Lloyd Williams-owned newcomer Belmont

Avenue (Zoffany) by a head, with Always

Waitin (Tamarkuz) three lengths away in third.

Pride Of Dubai stands for $38,500 at Coolmore

Australia in 2020.

11 for ShalaaArrowfield Stud shuttler Shalaa (Invincible

Spirit) sired his 11th individual winner when

My Swallow (2 c ex Green Swallow by Green

Tune) ran out a comfortable winner of a seven

furlong novice contest at Sandown for the Sir

MIcahel Stoute and Ryan Moore partnership.

Having his second start, the juvenile beat

Bullace (Toronado) by two lengths, with

Ebnzaidoon (Speightstown) another half

a length away in third. My Swallow is a half

brother to four winners, including Group 2

victor Yellow And Green (Monsun). Shalaa

stands at Arrowfield for a fee of $33,000 (inc.

GST) in 2020.

59 for Frankel

Juddmonte star Frankel (Galileo) sired his 59th

individual stakes winner when Majestic Noor

(3 f ex Nouriya by Danehill Dancer) registered

the third victory of her career with a win in

yesterday’s John Musker Fillies’ Stakes (Listed,

1m 2f) at Yarmouth. The John Gosden-trained

filly was bouncing back from her disappointing

effort when sent off favourite for a Group 3

race in France last time out, as she beat Black

Lotus (Declaration Of War) by a length and a

half. Festive Star (Golden Horn) was a further

neck away in third. A 650,000 gns purchase at

Tattersalls in 2018, Majestic Noor is the fifth foal

out of the Listed winning Nouriya (Danehill

Dancer). Frankel stood for a fee of £175,000

(approx AUD$310,400) in 2020.

25 for KingmanKingman (Invincible Spirit) was another

Juddmonte sire among the winners yesterday

when victory for Posted (4 f ex Time Away

by Darshaan) in Sandown’s Fortune Stakes

(Listed, 1m) provided him with his 25th

individual stakes winner. The Richard

Hannon-trained four-year-old was winning

for the third time as she defeated favourite

Montatham (Showcasing) by three lengths.

Lavender’s Blue (Sea The Stars) was another

half a length away in third. Posted is a half

sister to five winners including Group 2

scorer Time On (Sadler’s Wells) and Time

Control (Sadler’s Wells), the dam of Moyglare

Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f ) winner Cursory Glance

(Distorted Humor). Further back this is

the family of Time Charter (Saritamer).

Kingman stood for a fee of £150,000 (approx

AUD$266,000) in 2020.

Vale Pat SmullenNine-time Irish champion jockey Pat Smullen

has died at the age of 43 after suffering a

relapse of pancreatic cancer. The winner of 12

European Classics, Smullen was diagnosed

with the illness in March 2018. His initial

treatment led to him being given a clean bill

of health last year, however Smullen suffered

a relapse in recent months and his condition

is believed to have deteriorated last week. His

family confirmed that he died in hospital in

Dublin on Tuesday evening. A dual champion

apprentice in 1995 and 1996, Smullen’s career

reached a glorious climax when he landed the

Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f ) aboard Harzand

(Sea The Stars) in 2016. That triumph on

the Aga Khan’s homebred was achieved in

partnership with his great ally Dermot Weld,

for whom he succeeded Mick Kinane as stable

jockey in 1999. Harzand went on to complete

the Derby double when taking out the Irish

(Gr 1, 1m 4f ) equivalent. Smullen also won

an Irish Derby on Grey Swallow (Daylami)

with other big-race wins including two Irish

1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) victories and four

consecutive Irish St Legers (Gr 1, 1m 6f ). In

total, he rode 1,892 winners in Ireland and

Britain, and 25 at the highest level around

the world. Smullen leaves behind his wife

Frances, the Classic-winning trainer who is

a sister of Aidan O’Brien’s wife Annemarie,

and their three children Hannah, Paddy and

Sarah.

Fellowes in no hurryto find Arran jockeyCharlie Fellowes is in no rush to decide

which jockey will ride dual Melbourne Cup

placegetter Prince Of Arran (Shirocco) this

spring after Michael Walker informed him he

would be riding another English stayer, Dashing

Willoughby (Nathaniel), instead. Prince Of

Arran was ridden by Walker six times over the

past two springs for two wins but he explained

to Fellowes that he had a long-standing

relationship with Dashing Willoughby's owner

Sir Owen Glenn and was committed to riding

that horse. "The one thing I thought I didn't

need to worry about was a jockey," Fellowes

told Melbourne radio station RSN. "It's very

sad Michael can't ride him as he can take a

huge amount of credit for our success here."

Fellowes said he had already been contacted

by numerous Australian jockeys and he would

put them on a list but he was not in a hurry to

make a decision. "There's not likely to be any

European jockeys and there's question marks

whether Sydney jockeys will be available,"

Fellowes continued. "I'll see who is available

and then work out who can suit the horse the

best."

Skyward enters quarantineJohn Messara believes Skyward (Camelot) is a

“live chance” for this year's Caulfield Cup - as

long as he makes it into the field. The northern

hemisphere four-year-old entered quarantine

in Newmarket yesterday having finished fourth,

beaten just two and three-quarter lengths by

Cup topweight Anthony Van Dyck (Galileo) on

Sunday, on what was his final start for Fabrice

Chappet before joining Trent Busuttin and

Natalie Young. "We were very pleased with his

run in the Prix Foy," Messara told Racing.com.

"The run shows he can quicken up, we know

he can stay and he drops six kilograms coming

to Australia off that run in the Prix Foy so over

that distance it should equate to four lengths

and on that basis he wins the race (Caulfield

Cup)," Messara continued. "He's a progressive

horse. He's acquitted himself well again and if

he travels well to Melbourne I think he's a live

chance in the Cups." Entry into the Caulfield

Cup is Skyward's greatest obstacle. He sat 63rd

in the elimination order last Thursday and

Messara said that should Skyward fail to gain a

start in the Caulfield Cup, the Geelong Cup (Gr

3, 2400m) is under consideration.

Yearlings by Camelot and Lope De Vega feature among 784 lots for Arqana-OsarusThe Arqana-Osarus October Yearling Sale has

been restructured as a result of the coronavirus

pandemic, with 784 lots selling over five

days and in three designated parts. Starting

event takes place on October 3, the eve of the Prix

de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m), across Paris

winner Measure Of Time (Gleneagles), the Group

2 winner Kalifornia Queen (Lope De Vega) and

the consistent Chachnak (Kingman). Smart

juveniles include Coeursamba (The Wow Signal)

A genuine Cups contender has emerged from the spring pack for Highclere, in what’s been a busy period for the team, both on and off the track, as new additions to race in the two-tone blue add further strength to a formidable line up.

Belvedere a majorplayer for Cups

Kicking off on the turf, and it’s the Bart

Cummings next for Lord Belvedere, who

further outlined his credentials as a genuine

Cup contender after continuing his superb

form, backing up wins in June and July with

another hard-fought victory over 2500 metres

at Flemington on Saturday.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-

trained seven-year-old was allocated 50.5

kilograms for the Melbourne Cup earlier this

month, and will earn ballot-free access to the

race with victory in the Bart Cummings.

Global Gift hits the ground running

Shares in Highclere’s Global Gift were

snapped up quickly following this column’s

previous installment, and that investment was

immediately rewarded as the five-year-old

struck over a mile at Bendigo.

“It was a fantastic win. He’s going to give

his owners a lot of fun and hopefully a lot of

prizemoney,” said Highclere Chairman Harry

Herbert.

The son of Invincible Spirit remains

progressive, despite getting stuck in the

Moonee Valley mud on his latest start.

“I think he’s a very bright prospect for us. He

got stuck in the ground when he ran at Moonee

Valley and we put a line through that.”

Magic Millions target for Edison

Edison, who soared to two consecutive

victories for Bjorn Baker during July, will

target the lucrative Magic Millions meeting in

January, as he seeks to give his owners further

on-track excitement. He is being targeted at the

$1 million Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m).

“He was fantastic winning twice for Bjorn

Baker last preparation. He’s back in work and

we’re going to target the lucrative races up at

Magic Millions in January which will be exciting

for his owners and something to really look

forward to with him.”

Durston and Great House add strength to Australia team

There are two exciting additions to the

Highclere Australia line-up, with two-time

winner Durston and recent Tattersalls purchase

Great House heading Down Under. Durston,

who Herbert expected to leave all before him

this year in the UK, joins with a big reputation

and will be one to watch as we head into next

year.

“Durston has arrived, and is the capable

hands of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

They are absolutely thrilled to bits with him,”

said Herbert. “When you see the physical

horse, it’s easy to get excited, he’s an absolutely

cracking individual.

“This year we thought we’d carry all before

us, but he had a couple of tiny issues and we

stopped to get those right.

“We’ll see where we are next year but I very

much hope he’s a Melbourne Cup horse in the

making. I think he could go round the tracks in

Australia very well. He’ll be very versatile. He’s

got the speed for us to go shorter but we’d be

very hopeful he’d stay the Cup trips.”

Great House was a standout for Herbert in

the Tattersalls online sale, not only for being an

exceptional physical specimen, but also given

his birthdate. Great House was a December

28 foal, making his a year out for racing in his

native Ireland.

“I was talking to Donnacha O’Brien and this

horse really stood out. He’s a really interesting

one. A beautifully-bred son of Galileo, with a

wonderful pedigree and a wonderful looking

horse. But the real googly here is that he’s a

December 28 foal which puts him completely

out by a year. He’s racing as a four-year-old

when he’s a three-year-old.

“He sold very quickly, almost a record I

think, he’s such an impressive horse. For the job

we want him for, he’s going to go down there to

Chris Waller as a very lightly raced horse with

genuine ability who will start off a low mark and

hopefully work his way up.”

Vida Rose offers a shrewd investment for owners

Out of a half-sister to dual Group 3 winner

and Golden Slipper placegetter Tulip, with

the dam herself a Group 3 winner, Vida Rose

offers a terrific opportunity to buy into one of

the most exciting pedigrees in the stud book.

A three-year-old daughter of Champion Sire

Fastnet Rock, the sire of classy fillies Avantage,

Unforgotten and Atlantic Jewel, among a

long list of others, patience will be the key to

unearthing the full potential of this Lindsay

Park-trained three-year-old.

“She’s a lovely filly. All that family do well

later, as three-year-olds up,” enthused Herbert.

“A real scopey filly who I’m really looking

forward to.

“She’s a very well bred filly. There are just a

couple of shares left in her, which will be an excellent

investment as you’ll always have the pedigree.

“She will need time - The Lindsay Park team

have raced all the good ones from that family -

and they’re just being patient with her.”

Analysis: After racing consistently without winning in recent starts in

Victoria, Winning Partner returned to South Australia and succeeded

in recording his fifth win and his first stakes victory in 22 starts when

scoring here. He settled nicely towards the rear of the 16-runner field

before improving between runners nearing the turn. He took a split at

the 200m, hit the front at the 100m and then went on to win well. It was

also a good ride by Barend Vorster. Analytica raced in about ninth place,

between runners, found a gap on straightening, challenged at the 200m

and then battled on well for second. The top weight Savatoxl raced

outside the leader (Peloton), briefly hit the front at the 200m and then

battled on well to take the minor placing, with Peloton holding on for

fourth after leading until halfway down the straight. [KB]

Analysis: Deniki, a three-quarter sister to the talented Group 2 winner

Menari (Snitzel), indicated potential to progress to better things with a

narrow but good first-up win in smart time here. After a quick beginning,

she went to the front, but then raced a bit keenly in the lead. She was

challenged (by Osamu) nearing the home turn, then showed gameness

in fighting back to win in a photo. Osamu tracked the eventual winner,

challenged her strongly in the straight and after quite a battle, he failed

by only a short-head for second in a good performance, with the filly

Newsreader holding on for third after being handy all the way. [KB]
