Sima Gonsai16 February — 10 May 2009

This spring, Birmingham-based film maker and ‘cyclist explorer’ Sima Gonsai will be exploring all corners of the Walsall borough on her bike. By following the routes and directions suggested by the local residents she meets along the way, Sima will create an alternative map of the town based on personal stories, collective memories and local folklore.

As Sima sets out on each journey from the gallery, where would you suggest she cycles to next? Get in touch by dropping into the Artists’ Studio, visiting www.myspace.com/cycledialogues or waving to Sima as she cycles down your street!

Open studio event:Thursday 30 April, 2pm - 4pmFree, everyone welcome.

Ania Bas25 May — 30 August 2009

Ania Bas blurs the edges of what art is and what it can be. Her work centres on ideas of collaboration and the outcome of her projects vary; from texting via mobile phones and setting up market stalls, to simply just sitting and talking.

Ania will continue the art of conversation in Walsall by sharing stories with visitors and staff over tea and cake. As part of her residency, she will create unique gallery tours which bypass the exhibits and the architecture to highlight the long-standing memories which resonate throughout the building.

ARTIST ROOMSAndy Warhol: Early Drawings

15 May — 5 July 2009

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. This unique collection of early illustrative works dating from the 1950’s to 1962 demonstrates Warhol’s move between the worlds of commercial advertising and the New York Pop art scene, whilst revealing an alternative side of his colourful character.

Throughout 2009, museums and galleries across the UK will be showing over 30 ARTIST ROOMS; a new national collection created by the dealer and collector Anthony d’Offay, jointly owned by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland. This is the first time a national collection has been shared and shown simultaneously across the UK, and has only been made possible through the exceptional generosity of independent charity The Art Fund. Anthony d’Offay’s guiding principle for the creation of ARTIST ROOMS was the concept of individual rooms devoted to particular artists.

In ConversationJean WainwrightSaturday 30 May 2009, 2pm

Andy Warhol scholar Jean Wainwright will be offering an insight into Warhol’s early works; from his experimental approach to mark making to his lifelong love affair with fashion.

22 May — 26 July 2009

From antiquity to today, food has been a recurring subject matter in the history of art; from early depictions in mythological and religious scenes of all cultures, to more symbolic and formal concerns. Food is desire, pleasure, life and death – yet also a symbol of decay, excess and greed.

Pot Luck brings together works by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists who show us how the use of food in art continues to be on the menu. With each artist bringing a ‘dish’ to the table, the exhibition combines personal tastes with the current flavour of our social and political climate.

Jacob EpsteinIllustrations to the Old Testamentuntil 31 May 2009

Epstein’s dramatic and striking watercolours and drawings engage with his unusual visionary interpretation of the Old Testament. He became completely absorbed in the ‘whole new world passing before him’ and exhibited fifty four illustrations at the Redfern Gallery, London in 1932.

See a selection of these unique interpretations of the Old Testament alongside other Epstein paintings, drawings and sculptures in the Garman Ryan Collection.

Blooming Marvellous6 June – 14 October 2009

Flowers and plants have always been a popular choice for artists and visitors alike. Walsall’s collections contain examples of contemporary artists using the subject matter to give a more political twist to what is perceived as a traditional subject.

This carefully selected bunch of artists has been preoccupied with gardening and the relationship that humanity has with nature and our ‘taming’ of it, from the virtuoso Victorian painting of Primulas by Edith Elliot to the quiet understated stillness of Doc Proctors Spring Flowers; the exuberant rioting of Jacob Epstein’s Freesia’s and the sparse spiky observations of Lucian Freud’s King Cups.

Don’t Judge a Book by It’s Cover Who are they? The people behind the portraits…

15 May — 5 July 2009

This new exhibition invites us to look at the people who were painted and sculpted by both famous and unknown artists. The portraits, both historic and contemporary are taken from Walsall’s expanding art collections. They include the striking Pre-Raphaelite muse, Elizabeth Siddal by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the young and contemplative Margueritte, sister of the artist Edgar Degas, the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore sculpted by Jacob Epstein and Chila Kumari Burman whose self portrait ‘Don’t Judge a Book by It’s Cover’ proclaims loudly how wrong we are to look at people through a superficial assessment often based on a social stereotype. The stories behind the faces are as extraordinary and fascinating as the artworks themselves.

CAUSATIONMonday 29 June – Sunday 5 July 2009

Final major art works by Walsall College HND Fine Art students presenting systems of cause and effect. This exhibition invites responses from the viewer on the purpose and function of art.
