Successful people aren’t necessarily better or smarter than those who struggle to get ahead One thing successful people do better however is they set goals and plan for the future They can seem tireless in their pursuit of their ‘ide-al-self’ Ironically for most people the biggest barrier to achieving this goal is their very own ‘self’ Specifically, we all have what psycholo-gists call ‘self-talk’ or that ‘inner-voice ’ Un-fortunately, your self-talk may be to say things such as: “I hate Mondays” or “I’m so bored” In reality a lot of self-talk comes from inter-nalized messages we have received at times in our lives when we were highly impressionable This kind of negative thought process can be counter-productive in terms of the effect it has on our motivation Quite literally we can ‘talk ourselves’ out of being motivated After all, if you’ve just told yourself that you ‘hate’ some-thing, you’ve just given yourself permission to dis-engage and thus fail My 1st year Psych pro-fessor used to say that one role of the therapist was to teach people to “…change the channel…” of their self-talk If you can stop and actually
listen to what you may be saying to yourself you can then stop and actively change the message which will unfailingly change your behaviour This can then help you become more like the ‘you’ that you want to be! It’s amazing to think that the path to self-improvement actually starts in the grey matter located in your head! Some of the most fun and most successful people I know are the ones talking to me about the amazing things they are doing and the plans they have The recurring theme with these people is their positive attitude Nobody can tell you what kind of attitude to have except you I hope in some way these words will free your spirit and allow you to unleash the power of a positive attitude in your life I also hope you will seek out What’s On Digest Cowichan every month in print and online and talk yourself into trying something new, taking in a show, visiting a local shop and sucking the marrow out of life

I'm launching What's On Digest Cowichan he came right out and told me that he'd be interested to hear more After I gave him the information and rates to advertise he jumped
right on board So it's true what comes around goes around I have been using E&S heating these past 13 years and now E&S heating is
able to use What's On Digest to advertise their business But please don't get me wrong I didn't simply write this article to "sell" E&S
It turned out they had a service truck in the area and were able to come by later that same day Since that first call I have never used another company to service my furnace and related equipment The reason is very simple: E&S Heat-ing has always been straight forward, honest and provided excellent service for fair value When they come for the regular service I can relax in confidence that they are getting the job done When I told Ed that
HOME&LIFEI have known Ed from E&S Heating since I moved to the island in 2002. As a new home owner I needed to have my furnace serviced. The problem was I didn't know a soul in my new city. I spoke to my neighbour and he strongly recommended E&S Heating. I called them up and was pleasantly surprised when my call was answered promptly and by an actual human being.
Since that first call I have never used another company to service my furnace
and related equipment.

A Spanish captain was walking on his ship when a
soldier rushes to him and exclaims, “An enemy ship is approaching us!” The captain replies calmly, “Go get my red shirt ” The soldier gets the shirt for the captain The enemy ship comes in and heavy rounds of fire are exchanged Finally, the Spaniards win The soldier asks, “Congrats sir, but why the red shirt?” The captain replies, “If I got injured, my blood shouldn’t be seen, as I didn’t want my men to lose hope ” Just then, another soldier runs up and says, “Sir, we just spotted another twenty enemy ships!” The captain calmly replies, “Go bring my yellow pants ”

Whats On Music
Written by Chase Padgett and Jay Hopkins, 6 Gui-tars is a pitch perfect blend of music, comedy, and characters During this 85 minute show, each of the characters ranging from a 19 year old rock prodigy to an 87 year old blues man share their journey with music from discovery to mastery through songs and stories that leaves every audience laughing, crying, and falling in love with music all over again
6 Guitars premiered in the 2010 Orlando Interna-tional Fringe Festival where it was greeted with sold out houses and standing ovations Since then is has traveled internationally becoming one of the most successful shows from the Canadian Fringe Festival Circuit by breaking attendance records and receiving high praise from critics In 2013 it became one of the top 5 highest gross-ing shows in the history of the Winnipeg Fringe Festival by selling nearly 3000 tickets in 12 days

iPhone Battery LifeWith the release of Apple’s new mobile operating system, A few complaints have come up that the battery life has decreased since installing it. Most cases have been on older devices, like the iPhone 4 and 4s.
When Apple releases a new operating system, they usually optimize it for their current prod-ucts, resulting in issues like this for the older products To alleviate these problems, I’m going to go over a few things you can do to increase the battery life of your Apple device running The latest iOS
Background RefreshLocation Settings > General > Background App Refresh
This feature allows an app to refresh itself in the background This is handy with some apps, but not necessary for all On this page, you can either turn Background App Refresh completely off, or you can turn it off individually for spe-cific apps The fewer apps you have refreshing in the background, the better you battery life improvement will be
Location ServicesLocation Settings > Privacy > Location Services
Location Services is a fantastic feature of iOS It allows an app to find out your location This is obviously needed for mapping apps, but it really isn’t necessary for all apps It seems like there are more and more apps out there that want to track your location Personally, I have Location Servic-es enabled on a bunch of apps (Facebook, Twitter, Weather, etc) but I have disabled it on things that I feel do not need to know my location (banking apps, Alien Blue, etc)
In the Location Services page, there is a submenu called System Services These are things in the
operating system that use location services We have the ability to turn off some of these I would suggest turning off “Location-Based iAds,” “Popular Near Me,” and “Traffic” if you are not in a city that has traffic on Apple Maps
ParallaxLocation Settings > General >A ccessibility > Reduce Motion
iOS7 features a 3D background effect called Par-allax It takes your background image and zooms in a little bit, allowing it to give a D feel when you tilt the phone This is a neat feature and all, but if you are looking to get the most out of your battery, this feature needs to go In the Reduce Motion page, just toggle it off
BluetoothLocation Control Center > Bluetooth Settings > Bluetooth
If you have a Bluetooth device, and you’re not in range of it, your iPhone will constantly be searching for it If you’re looking to get the most out of your battery life, turn off Bluetooth when you are not using it This can be a pain in your car when you forget to turn it on before starting your drive, but it will help your battery
Hopefully, after adjusting some of these settings, you will have an improvement in your battery life

PET TIPThe coast is beautiful during the summer months and we are drawn out to explore the vast outside world that surrounds our homes. We pack up the kids, the dog, and everything that goes with them, and head for wherever it is the day takes us.
We slap sunscreen, hats and hiking boots on the kids and ourselves before we let them race on the trails We warn the kids what poison ivy looks like and smear calamine lotion on them when they find it anyway But what about Rov-er? Is there anything else we should be worry-ing about?
Dogs are generally very self-sufficient when it comes to roaming the great outdoors after all, that's where they came from However, many of our friends don't resemble the majestic wolf and are not as instinctually aware of the risks they can come across on a simple hike There are a few things that we can be aware of to help out our furry friends during the summer No, they don't need hats and long-sleeved shirts! But dogs that have short white fur or have had very short hair-cuts do need sunscreen Use the spray kind – it gets through their fur better and isn't as messy Oh, and avoid those sensitive faces spray it on your hand if you need to and apply it to the area
Dogs also can get heat stroke To avoid this po-tentially fatal and often critical condition, never leave a dog in a vehicle on a warm day Even with the windows cracked, the temperature in-side a car can soar above 100 degrees Celsius (boiling temperature!) in a very short period of time Dogs can also suffer from heat stroke when they are outside and exerting a lot of en-ergy in the sun Always ensure that you have plenty of shade and cool water available to your dog when you are spending time outside in the sun together Signs of heat stroke include heavy panting, a panicked expression, a dry-looking tongue, rapid heart rate, dry gums and losing
consciousness What do you do if your dog is displaying one or more of these signs? It is an emergency – head straight to the closest veteri-nary clinic
When out on a walk or run in the heat ensure your dog has access to plenty of water If you are thirsty, so is she When we bring our girl on family outings, we carry a fold-up bowl with us and fill it for her whenever the kids start asking for water She usually slugs down most of what we put in there As well, when we come across a lake or stream, we encourage her to get in the water and cool down – she is a Lab so that's not too difficult!
Finally, watch for conditions that can damage her feet, including broken glass, sharp rocks and even hot pavement We've had several dogs come in with burns on their pads from racing around on asphalt in very hot weather
In the summertime, the most important is get out and enjoy being outside with your four-legged friend while being conscious of her comfort and safety Dogs love being with us and they love doing things with us Taking your friend for a walk, even around the block, will have a surprisingly good effect on both of your moods!

From the rockabilly roots in Arkansas to the hallowed halls of the Grand Old Opry, Ring of Fire: Project Johnny Cash, is set to stir your soul and make you smile.
On stage at The Chemainus Theatre Festival from February 20 to April 11, the show fea-tures over 30 hit songs matched with narrated insights that reveal how Cash went from a life of farming to one of influential fame
Ring of Fire, conceived by William Meade and created by Richard Maltby Jr , is more than a biography or collection of Cash's songs His story is told across a mingling of scenes that frame his iconic row-diness and redemption through his unforget-table music The result is a sweeping portrayal of American life in the themes of love, faith, family, and resilience through hard times
"There is something appealing about Cash the icon – an untamed individual and still a community advocate through prison reform, concept albums and old time values" says show and Festival artistic director, Mark Du-Mez "The beauty of Johnny Cash is he let us hear many strands of a growing nation finding its groove He was a wild gentleman, a rustic poet, a saved sinner and an American mu-sic hero with a genre-busting sound that still "kicks-it" today "
The show is more revue than concert tribute and brims with all the fun one would expect of seeing Cash live on stage Over three-dozen memorable songs are performed, including: "Country Boy," "Walk the Line", "Five Feet High and Rising," "Daddy Sang Bass," "Ring
of Fire," "I Walk the Line," "I've Been Every-where," "The Man in Black," and the legend's final hit, A Boy Named Sue "
Ring Of Fire: Project Johnny Cash is an in-timate show, perfectly suited for an intimate stage like the Chemainus Theatre Festival The ambiance suits the small-town Southern settings in the musical, and draws audiences closely into the moments of a young man fall-
ing in love, getting married, dealing with adversity, and finally reaching his golden years "You can feel the depth of Cash's journey, and perhaps a bit of your own", says DuMez "His experiences of family, commu-nity and country are warm and familiar "
For anyone who has ever wondered about or enjoyed the "Man in Black" experience, Ring of Fire is a terrific live way to discover his en-tertaining story Tickets are available now for evening and matinee shows, playing February 20 to April 11, by calling the Box Office at 1-800-565-7738, or online at chemainusthe-atre ca A special show-themed dinner add-on in the contemporary Playbill Dining Room (featuring an impressive hot buffet, fresh salad bar, and tempting desserts); a full "Getaway" package at the Best Western Plus Chemainus Inn (which includes accommodations, show dinner, deluxe breakfast buffet, use of the in-door mineral pool, hot tub and fitness centre)
Ring of Fire, conceived by William Meade and created by Richard Maltby Jr., is
more than a biography or collection of Cash's songs. His story is told across a mingling of scenes that frame his iconic rowdiness and redemption through his
unforgettable music.

Sorry there is only room for the last few lines of this wonderful poem about childbirth It will be included in an upcoming book on the subject put out by Leaf Press Keep an eye on their website Ann Graham Walker, who wrote this sensitive poem, is a writer and journalist who moved to Vancouver Island in the summer of 2002, after living and working in Nova Scotia for twenty-five years She had many wonderful experiences in Nova Scotia - raising three children, working as a CBC radio producer, getting a front-row seat on the political world as speech writer to former Nova Scotia premier, Dr John Savage, publishing a book about Halifax, and enjoying many friendships However being a cold-weather wimp at heart, she was very happy to leave her snow shovels behind and swap them for the West Coast’s blissful gardening and majestic landscapes She still works as a freelance journalist, hikes and gardens profusely, and lives in Nanoose Bay with her husband and three cats She very actively supports the Nanaimo poetry community, and is on the organising committee for Cascadia Poetry Festival 3 which comes to Nanaimo April 30 – May 3, 2015

Diving head first into one of Vancouver Island's largest wineries, Brenda Hetman-Craig and Layne Craig have embraced the culture of 40 Knots Winery and are taking it to a new level. Nestled in the tranquility and breathtaking Comox Valley, 40 Knots boasts 18 acres of vineyard and over 40,000 vines, making it the second largest on the island.
Layne Craig, a veteran to agriculture, and Brenda, a retired business manager, wasted no time in seeking some of Canada's most ad-vanced and skilled professionals in the wine business With the help of Christine Colleta from Okanagan Crush Pad in Summerland, an extensive learning process started To-gether with New Zealander wine maker Matt Dumayne, who has 24 years of wine making experience under his belt and specializes in Pinot Noirs, which New Zealand is world fa-mous for, the intricate secrets and chemistry of fine wine making is handed down
"It has been life changing and exhilarating at the same time It is hard work but endlessly interesting, the element of owning such a re-warding industry that is truly in the hands of mother nature is nerve wracking but very ex-citing," says Layne Craig
The vineyard is situated in a position that cre-ates unique temperate conditions, keeping the temperature higher than most other locations on the island To create the magnificent collec-tion of sparkling, whites, reds, roses, fortified and ice wines the vineyard is a combination of vines coming from France and Vancouver Island Spindrift Brut, Pinot Gris, Whitecaps,
Chardonnay, Rose, Pinot Noir and Safe Haven are all Vancouver Island grapes, and are all es-tate made wines Grapes were bought in from the Okanagan to create the wonderful blend, Meritage and the unique Merlot Ice Wine as the grapes required in these wines can not be grown or frozen on Vancouver Island As an ag-riculturalist Layne knows first hand the envi-ronmental responsibilities to growing grapes,
and is choosing to exchange all herbi-cides and chemi-cals with natural earth friendly products
Tasting Room and Wine Shop: From Thurs-day to Sunday, 11 30am to 5 30pm you can visit the tasting room and wine shop Enjoy an

afternoon in a beautiful setting on the patio, sampling the wines amongst the vines The Vineyard is the perfect destination for small or large groups, weddings or family outings
To buy, 40 Knots Wines can be found at selec-tive private and specialty liquor stores or you can order direct from the winery
Just one more secret, Layne is working on a Pinot Noir that has undergone 2 years of bar-rel fermentation As a rule I'm not a fan of Pi-not Noir but, after just a small sample, what I tasted bared no resemblance either in colour, smell or taste of what I remember from a Pi-not Noir, this was AMAZING!! and will be a strong competitor in any Pinot Noir competi-tion internationally
Enjoy an afternoon in a beautiful setting on the patio, sampling the

March is all about woman. It’s important to recognize all the wonderful women in our lives from our grandmothers, mothers and wives to our sisters, nieces and friends. On a day to day level I think we all need to think in terms of how we want the women in our lives to be treated in society.
Each person can make the choice to treat the women in their lives in a way that respects the very important and equal role women do, and should, have in our lives and in the world Gender is one of those human condition elements that define us like nothing else No doubt it is often very difficult for many women and girls to rise above gender ste-reotypes This is particularly true, in our society, when aggressive sexualization of gender roles is so pervasive in popular media Very often these mes-sages are expertly targeted at young women capi-talizing on their emerging and highly impression-able understanding of what it is to be a “woman ” Similarly, these messages target young men but as I said, March is all about women! In other parts of the world (and of course here too) girls and women are subjected to abuse, and kept from obtaining ed-ucation and economic freedom Why these things happen is hard to say There is an economic com-ponent but generally, and arguably, it’s to do with power of one over another As Canadians we all have it within ourselves to set a better standard and show other societies (and ourselves) that there is a better way I think, as shown by many Canadian women from Olympic athletes to authors to clas-sical guitarists, we are proving, through education and institutions founded on principles of fairness and equality, that as a progressive society, and an evolving species, we can overcome the temptation to let out-dated gender roles define our destiny Hope to see you come out and support internation-al women’s day in whatever capacity you are able!
I’m Simon and that’s Whats On!

Did you know that your unsecured debt (credit cards, high interest loans, tax debt and other small debts) can be sold and passed around to different collection agencies? Once a consumer goes into default and starts skipping payments, they be-come a high-risk investment So, large firms will typically sell this debt for pennies on the dollar
When debtors stop paying those bills, the banks regard the balances as assets for 180 days After that, they are of questionable worth So banks “charge off” the accounts, taking a loss, and other creditors act similarly These huge, routine sell-offs have created a vast market for unpaid debts — not just credit-card debts but also, medical loans, gym fees, payday loans, overdue cellphone tabs, old utility bills, delinquent book-club ac-counts, timeshare debt, the scale is breathtaking
This is actually a good thing for you.
Because your debt is a commodity on the market (and because you haven’t been paying it off and miss-ing payments) you are a high-risk investment
Creditors no longer care that you originally bor-rowed 30K They aren’t aiming to get all that back—they just want to salvage and get some money from you, as they also know by this point you likely have problems with your mortgage, cable bills, and other creditors trying to extract money from you
This is the biggest secret about debt: just because you owe 30K doesn’t mean you’ll have to pay all that back You are dealing with multi-billion dol-lar companies—they are often fine with taking a huge reduction as they are looking to recoup something on their investment
Now, some of the “debt settlement” companies that promise this don’t actually deliver Or they
are Canadian shell companies with call centres based in the US who actually make their money by charging you heavy upfront fees and not being able to successfully resolve your issue
This is why you have more power than you real-ize Unlike the credit counselling agencies that will usually put you in a program to repay 100% of your debt plus interest, you have the power to make an offer to your creditors and work out an agreement This debt can usually be settled col-lectively, with all of your creditors, in one low monthly payment at zero percent
