Festival Nanaimo turns 2 and in one year it has grown to over 60 fun-filled activities happening in Nanaimo from March 1 - April 3, 2016. It is not your typical festival model because it happens over 33 days with a host of activities showcasing Nanaimo, including: Festival Nanaimo Signature events, concerts, visual art, exhibits, dance, runs, walks, pub crawls, St. Paddy’s Day celebrations, cycling tours, a boat show, Dine-Abouts, Whisky tasting, Spring Break activities, Easter weekend events, a Nanaimo Bar Sunday on March 20th and PirateFest and the 1st Nanaimo Food Truck Festival on April 2. One of Signature Events for Festival Nanaimo this year is the world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra big band coming to Nanaimo for two shows. Kerilie McDowall shared her thoughts on this internationally acclaimed band.As a guitarist and a genuine jazz aficionado,
some of my happiest childhood memories
resurfaced when I heard that the world famous swing big band, the renowned Glenn Miller Orchestra, will perform at The Port Theatre
on March 21st and 22nd at 7:30 pm as Signature Events at this
year’s Festival Nanaimo.
For the past
15 years I have volunteered as a Vancouver Island jazz and improvised music radio/ podcast host and producer at CHLY 101.7 FM. Over the years I have presented many thousands of recordings to the public and I strongly feel that the music of the Glenn Miller Orchestra is still, after seven decades, the type of timeless music that can’t be surpassed.
With over 1700 songs and 300 performances per year delighting global audiences for six decades, the current Glenn Miller Orchestra band is led by vocalist/bandleader Nick Hischler. This band is in high demand with audiences of all ages, and is a favourite amongst musicians. Miller died in 1944. Miller’s estate reinstated the band in 1956 and The Glenn Miller Orchestra is now returning once again to our proud city. The orchestra performed in Nanaimo in 1962 with former bandleader Tex Beneke. Other past Glenn Miller Orchestra bandleaders within the past decades include: Buddy DeFranco, Buddy Morrow, Jimmy Henderson and Dick Gerhart.
Historically, trombonist Glenn Miller became the musical director for Tommy Dorsey’s band with brother Jimmy Dorsey in 1934. Only later did Miller become a bandleader of his own orchestra. The original 1937 Glenn Miller Orchestra was unsuccessful, but in 1939, the band’s popularity became enormous
with multiple hit records and tremendous box office sales. In
1941 the band had more top song hits in one year than anybody in the history of the recording industry - popular and beloved bandleader, composer, and trombonist Glenn Miller and his Glenn Miller Orchestra were the #1 top dance band in the USA.
For myself, thinking of Miller is a blast from the past. Thoughts of the Glenn Miller Orchestra take me back to happy days spent as a seven year old child on my father’s speedboat in Kingston, Ontario in the early 1970’s.
My father would bring out his 8 track tapes and instruct me to choose my favourite songs
from his music collection to play on the boat while we cruised around the Thousand Islands in Ontario.
I always chose Glenn Miller over Elvis from my Dad’s music collection because I was absolutely in love with the ecstatic and fun melodies and popular smash swing hits like In the Mood, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Tuxedo Junction, The American Patrol, A String of Pearls and the big band’s popular theme song Moonlight Serenade.
I cannot wait to hear this world famous big band in concert LIVE in Nanaimo!

What’s it all about? It’s a fun 5KM run, walk, or stroll hosted by Central Vancouver Island Financial Institutions. It is also a perfect opportunity to kick-start your health, to inspire all age groups in your family, and to do something that will also benefit your community. The Run for Life will raise essential funds to help purchase one of two new CT Scanners for Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). The new CT Scanners will decrease scan times, and provide state-of-the-art image clarity. You will be a part of an amazing gift to healthcare, but that’s not all. You will also do something for yourself.
Haven’t you been talking about stepping up, and stepping out to embrace a healthier lifestyle? Haven’t you mentioned volunteering for a cause close to your
heart? This blends the best of both worlds. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or new to the running world, start training for Run for Life now.
Learn how you can help fund a new CT Scanner by registering at www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com/run. Furthermore, follow the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation on Facebook to learn tricks of the
running trade from our partnering experts.
Since 2004 the Run for Life has raised more than $230,000 for the purchase of life-changing medical equipment at NRGH. This year, the
Financial Institutions have set the bar even higher, with a goal to raise $60,000 for the new CT Scanner. Visit our website to get started. Thank you and congratulations for making your health a priority!

Professional youth motivational coach, hip hop artist and clown, Dianna David is taking the RED BALL MOVEMENT to Nanaimo with the Crimson Coast Dance Society’s BODY TALK PROGRAM and she is inspiring the community to put their best foot forward and MAKE MOVES in the collaborative Spring Break Intensive from March 14 - 19, 2016, leading to a spectacular performance at the Port Theatre on March 20, 2016.
Dianna has worked weekly since October with a group of Nanaimo teens who came forward to participate in the annual Body Talk Cru. The Body Talk Program is a youth driven initiative of Crimson Coast Dance Society. Local teens who sign up learn, under the guidance of professional business mentors, the art of event planning while actually planning a real vs hypothetical one called Body Talk Workshop! It’s a week of dance, movement and theatre classes and this year it’s led by our guest artist AND the entire team of youth! You get to join your friends and family to explore the creative process, enjoy healthy fun together and support our young leaders of tomorrow with your presence and participation.
Call Crimson Coast Dance Society to get the full scoop and to register:
250.716.3230crimsoncoastdance.org Show Tickets: porttheatre.com
There are two streams during this workshop; one is for teens from 10am to 2pm and the other is for ALL AGES from 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Classes are held at VIBE Dance Studios, 1969 Boxwood, Nanaimo. The performance at the Port Theatre is pretty special this year, too, as The Port Theatre came on board to provide technical theatre mentorship to
those Body Talk Cru teens more interested in what is happening backstage than onstage! Be a part of the show or audience and show local teens that this community
is ready to support these young leaders in this initiative which was their idea in the first place!
