Get your lawn chairs, sunscreen and picnic baskets ready for another busy summer of outdoor events and entertainment in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. The calendar is full so save the dates and plan to attend each one. The Caribbean Festival is back for its 14th year and once again we’ll get to enjoy delicious food, great music and lots of dancing. At this year’s CountryFest they’ll also celebrate the 100th Anniversary of 4-H in BC! Congratulations to all

the 4-H Members, past and present, and have fun at your Reunion. Music on the Wharf; Summer Serenade; Pitt Meadows Airport Day; Osprey Days; and the True North Bluegrass Festival are just a few of the other events that are quickly becoming long-time annual traditions in Ridge Meadows. All of these events are made possible through the hard work and long hours put in by so many volunteers. Whenever you get the chance to, please thank them for all they do to help make our Community such a great one.

Business Spotlight on Cask & Keg BrewmastersIt’s a litt le known fact that Maple Ridge has its very own craft brewery. Well, technically it’s a ‘u-brewery’ but owners Daryl & Jessica Turner of Cask & Keg Brewmasters are trying hard to educate people that there really isn’t any diff erence.

“We are essenti ally exactly the same as a craft brewery,” says owner Daryl Turner, “we develop our own recipes and brew our signature beers from scratch exactly how a craft brewery does. The diff erence with us is that our customers are responsible for bott ling their own product and for starti ng the fermentati on process of their beer.”

This may sound daunti ng but it’s really not, starti ng fermentati on means adding yeast to the other beer ingredients and takes all but a few seconds. All of the other processing is handled by Cask & Keg. When you come in to bott le it generally takes under an hour to bott le a batch.

“A lot of people have had a bad experience with u-brew beer or have never tried it because they assume it can’t be good” says Jessica. “It’s a huge undertaking to educate potenti al customers that all u-brews are not created equally. There are very few u-brews that brew their beer from scratch like we do. We strive to be as good as commercial craft beers. We feel we off er a bett er quality product than many of the big commercial brands. New customers are oft en prett y surprised with the quality of their fi rst batch and then they’re hooked.”

Daryl is hoping that upcoming liquor regulati on changes will allow him to enter his beers in commercial craft brewing competi ti ons. “I’m not saying my beer is as good as Drift wood or Central City, two of my favourite breweries, but it defi nitely stands up against many of the craft beers available in the liquor store. We’d love to make a name for ourselves in the craft beer community.”

Cask & Keg also off ers winemaking services. “Our wines are made from kit” says Jessica. “Kit winemaking has come a long way in the last 10 years and there are some really beauti ful wines available now. Our kit manufacturers are sourcing their grapes from the same vineyards as commercial wineries. We also off er premium services like oak barrel aging of wines. If a premium kit wine is processed properly and then aged appropriately by the customer or in our barrels it easily stands up against commercial wines at a fracti on of the cost.”

You can read more about Cask & Keg’s services at caskandkegbrewmasters.ca Or just pop by and talk to them, they love talking about beer and wine.

Cask & Keg Brewmasters is located at 20767 Lougheed Hwy in Maple Ridge.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. This July, Emerald Pig’s 9th Bard on the Bandstand production, Much Ado About Nothing, will take you into the future and deep space, exploring the themes of love, mistaken identity, miscommunication, revenge, and redemption that Shakespeare was famous for. Against the backdrop of the Messina Cantina, you will be introduced to a wild set of musicians, and other aliens. Meet

Claudio and Hero, the naïve young lovers who fall victim to the mean-spirited plot of the loveless Don John, and Beatrice and Benedick who carry on a “merry war” and are “too wise to woo peaceably”. Don’t worry; as with all of Shakespeare’s comedies, everything works out in the end!

Bard on the Bandstand is always free, family-friendly and promises that you will come away with a wonderful

summerexperience to remember for years! July 17-19 at Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows; July 24-26 at Memorial Peace Park in Maple Ridge. Bring a picnic, blankets, lawn chairs and a donation for the Friends in Need Food Bank.

Kat Wahamaa started her appointment as Artist in Residence for the District of Maple Ridge/City of Pitt Meadows in April. “I am delighted to have been chosen to live and work in the community of Port Haney,” she says,”It’s a stunning area, full of character and characters that I can’t wait to meet!”

Kat’s career has spanned over 30 years in various areas. She has developed public arts programs, community wide festivals and events, arts and social action projects, championed local artists and initiatives and fostered connections between individuals and organizations on all kinds of projects. She believes that, “the arts are integral to the full growth and development of all people and the advancement of humanity.”

A dynamic musical performer and songwriter, Kat has performed throughout Western Canada, Japan, US and the UK at everything from festivals to concert halls, honky-tonks to house concerts winning rave reviews. Her current musical focus is with her partner Tony Rees. They perform as Kat & Tony – joyful, mournful, thoughtful, music for the folks - a mix of old-time and original jazz, roots and blues and they have just released a new CD called “Everything Blue”.

Her art has always held an element of community engagement, as music speaks directly to the soul. Over the last decade, through music, dance, fibre and photographic art, she has focused on community arts. Her goal with the Artist in Residency is to be an active, engaged member of the community. “I want to connect to the neighbourhood, and hopefully connect folks to each other in a meaningful way through arts and the simple

joy of creating together.”

For her first project Kat will be inviting community to work with her to expand her photographic art exhibition “Openings”. ”I have always been fascinated by openings.” she says. “Doors, windows or archways manifest architectural detail, give history lessons and become works of art at the hand of the elements. Openings found in nature, and those within us suggest another way of being or perceiving. All offer an invitation - what’s beyond, within?”

She will be creating a blog and inviting folks in the neighbourhood to send in photos of doors, windows, vistas in nature – such as the river provides - and also photos of what it is about their neighbourhood that opens them to new ideas, experiences or simply opens their hearts.

Photos submitted by community members will be uploaded onto the blog for public view and commentary with poems and short prose inspired by the images. The resulting body of work would then be displayed as an exhibition both in the neighbourhood and in a gallery space.

Kat plans to start the “Openings” project over the summer. She will also be creating a studio space in the residence and offering dance, visual art and music workshops and classes, likely starting in the fall. You can find her work at www.katwahamaa.ca and find email contact for her there as well.

Starch is a compound created by plants and it’s a crucial carbohydrate in the human diet. Outside of this use, there are several practical and benefi cial purposes, such as being used by drycleaners.

One of the most commonly drycleaned items is men’s dress shirts and drycleaners often use starch on those shirts. A starched, pressed shirt looks more professional and clean under a business suit. To secure the creases and to give the fabric a crisp, semi-stiff appearance,

starch will typically be applied during the fi nal pressing process. Dresses and other more formal attire can also remain wrinkle free for much longer after being starched.

If you ask your drycleaner to starch any clothing, it’s important you specify whether you want light, medium or heavy starching. The more that’s used, the stiffer the fabric will be after it’s pressed.

One example of extreme starching is the process we use for jeans worn by cowboys. It’s called Texas Starch and we’re the professionals in offering this unique service. Stop by today and ask us more!

Have morequestions?Feel free to stop in and ask Brenda. With over 30 years of drycleaning and pressing experience she’s your fabric and drycleaning expert.

What is Starch and why is it used on clothing?

Looking for aHome to Call Their Own.

This pretty cat is Sukko. She is a quiet girl who is always overlooked because she spends most of her time in a hidey hole away from all the action. Sukko has never adjusted to the shelter life. She’s not a fan of her roommates and she’s shy. Sukko isn’t a cuddler and likes her own space. She will make a perfect companion for someone who has no expectations, and would just be happy to share their home with an undemanding furry heartbeat. Give her a soft bed, a sunny windowsill, a bowl of food, an occasional pet and she will be forever grateful.

Airport Day at YPK- Pitt Meadows Regional Airport Aviation technology has come a long way. From the first steam powered model glider in the late 1840’s to the first solar-powered cross-continental flight in 2013. We live in a time where if you can dream it you can do it, and with that we want to show you all that was dreamed of throughout the years. Aviation has some of the most diverse and ex-citing jobs in the world, but without the minds of dreamers we wouldn’t be able to experience the most amazing gifts of all, the gift of FLIGHT! The day focuses on the amazing achievements in aviation and the peo-ple needed to perform them. The theme of our annual Airport Day is “Careers in Aviation”, and we welcome all of you to help us show our local communities and capture the interest of our future aviators. This July 20th is a free day for all ages to come and see the passion that Pitt Meadows Airport, its residents and the aviation world have for aviation that has prevailed thus far. The runways will still be active as we want everyone to be able to expe-rience an airport in operation! So fly an aircraft in and show it off ! We understand that not everyone is interested in aviation so we’ve mixed it up a bit and included the addition of our famous “Wings and Wheels” display, featuring some of the finest vehicles that can’t fly and our “Marketplace”, full of local business vendors, food carts and activi-ties for both children and adults. We highly encourage both the aviation industry and the general busi-ness community to be a Sponsor or become an Exhibitor and join us this year! So grab your friends and families and come down for a fun day!

Since farming began, nature continues to play a key element in agriculture practice. Many Agriculture practices are including natural methods to grow and or maintain crop production. Natural bio culture and organic methods are used more and more as consumers recognize the importance these methods play in sustaining healthy choices. Different farm practices are also encouraging native wildlife such as Raptors to provide a positive enforcement of crop health. Raptors are at the top of the food chain feeding on many rodents that damage roots of plants or infect feed for animals. Many species of Raptors co-exist upon the Agriculture industry, those include Owls that provide the night shift of harvesting rodents that would otherwise be infesting or damaging crops. One Barn Owl can consume 1400 mice per year, a family consumes over 9500 rodents per year, farmers best friend.

Agriculture benefi ts greatly from recognizing what raptor species is evident in their area; Kestrels, Red Tailed Hawks, Merlin’s and Peregrine Falcons are some of the natural species working in the fi eld. After all Raptors have a lot of talent in their talons, that’s their Business.
