Hollywood Magic - with Movie Music ManiaThe glitz and glamour of Tinsel Town comes to Na-naimo as the Vancouver Island Symphony rolls out the red carpet for Valentines with Movie Music Mania, two fabulous shows on Saturday, February 15 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. This powerful extravaganza, leading up to the 2014 Oscars in Hollywood, features the most amazing film scores you can imagine, from Wizard of Oz and Chorus Line to Avatar and Star Trek.
"We are going for the bigger picture," explains con-ductor Pierre Simard, "including vintage tracks, like the 1938 Oscar-winning The Adventures of Robin Hood. There is music from all genres, not just action. There's western, science fiction, fantasy, medieval and dramatic."

If you want to make the most of every day some-times you may need to focus your attention on what you want most for you in your life. Develop a new vision and try each day to make tangible progress towards your goals. Here are some simple things you can do to help you along the way.
Find love. Don’t be a lonely heart. Go out and seek new people to love and who will love you back. Try to build up relationships in your life that sup-port your personal goals.
Be organized. Everyone needs a plan for life. Such a plan may include picking up a copy of Whats On Nanaimo every month. Without a plan for your life or in the absence of clear goal you may find your-self drifting and less fulfilled. Use Whats On to locate seniors activities in order to connect with others at the same life stage.
Find a cause you can believe in. Choose an issue that annoys you and build an argument around it. Like many others you may find this purpose takes you on a journey that becomes more interesting than you could have possibly imagined.
Fuel your body and feed your mind. Of course you know you should eat well, get a good nights sleep and engage in regular exercise. Re-connect with hobbies or activities you enjoyed at earlier stages of your life. Challenge yourself to start a di-ary and write your thoughts down. Sometimes see-
ing your thoughts on paper can help you to come to terms with things that may be on your mind that perhaps you were not even fully aware of.
Be resilient. Too often people lose focus and then lose their resolve. Try to stay focused and to seek challenges in your life. When you are challenging yourself you are tapping into thoughts and behav-iours that give a person his or her resiliency.
Tolerate your own failings. People tend to beat themselves up when things go wrong and yet ne-glect to take the time to cheer up when things go well. Try to learn to accept yourself just as you are. If you learn to love yourself more you may find that others will too

WhatsOnhomesWhats On Nanaimo met with Cheryl Campbell, marketing director for Nanaimo North Town Center, to talk about the "Love Your Home Speakers" Series Trade Show happening Saturday February 15th at Nanaimo North Town Centre.
WO: What is the love your Home Speakers Series and Trade Show and why is it "love" your home?
CC: The event, free for the public, is a way to connect local people with residential construction professionals. The speakers' series is typically held in meeting rooms but Central Vancouver Island Home Builders Association wanted to open it up to the public. I worked with Dana Aysals and Kelsey Botting at the Central Vancouver Island Home Builders Association (CVIHBA) putting this show together and we chose the "love" theme both because it's Valentines weekend and because people do really love their homes!
WO: Who will be there and where in the mall will the show be held?
CC: Members of the CVIHBA will be there for questions and open to conduct business! It's a great opportunity to meet local residential con-struction pro's (RCP's). The show will be held at Centre Court inside Nanaimo North Town Centre from 9:30am-5:30pm.
WO: I understand you have held a similar event previously. Was that show a success?
CC: Yes absolutely! In the past we've had a lot of people attend. There is always great foot traffic flow and lots of customers networking and doing business. For trades people looking for customers this is a great opportunity and for people to get to know industry professionals on a personal level as well. So it is a "win-win" for all!
WO: Who are the speakers?
CC: The morning speaker (11AM) is James Mc-Intyre of Studio Kitchens and PI Granite. James will be talking about "Kitchen Reno's". In the afternoon, at 1PM, the speaker is Ken Connolly

As they age, cats and dogs are extremely different, so we will actually split this into two articles. Let's start with the mysterious cat. Picture a very old cat. What do you see? They are skinny, they don't move around much, their fur is not kept up, and their eyes look different than a young cats. So why does this happen? Well, most older cats have arthritis. This tends to be one of the main reasons they slow down. Getting them onto a joint supplement, that your veterinarian can recommend for you, can have amazing affects on their movement and com-fort level. Some cats can't digest supplements well, and a change in diet may be recommended. Talk to someone who knows about nutrition. Cats are also unable to digest as well as they age. Like some older people, they start to lose muscle mass as well as body fat. If this is a gradual change in weight, and not accompanied by increased water intake or increased urination, then likely it is the inability to digest protein effectively. If it is a weight loss over less then a few months or accompanied by changes in drinking or urine output, then this is not likely a digestion problem. Many cats as they age suffer from kidney, thyroid, and diabetic problems. These are easily diagnosed with an exam and blood test by your local veterinarian.
This loss of muscle mass accounts for the changes we see in older cats' faces as well. They lose some of the muscles of the skull making their faces leaner and 'pushed in' looking. The muscles and fat behind the eyes also degenerate, resulting in a wane look. Other changes that occur with the eyes include freckles on the irises and cataracts. Freck-les can be completely benign if they grow slowly and do not display any signs of malignancy. These should be checked by a veterinarian to ensure that they are benign in nature. As well, cataracts can be completely benign, but can be a sign of diabetic changes. All of these changes that we see are not signs of debilitating illness or 'just age'. Many can

As a business person here in Nanaimo I am out and about quite a bit. A good amount of that time I am driving my SUV which gives me a pretty good view of the road and of other drivers. As a result I’m in a position to see what goes on in relation to if people are texting while trying to drive or even while stopped at a red light. We all know that we shouldn’t text and drive (because it’s illegal and also really stupid ) but for some reason it seems like we all are still doing it.
I’m not going to rant about how dangerous this is or cite a bunch of statistics or blame any specific group. What I will say is that one thing we can all do is make a choice to not text someone when we know they are driving. This is something I have chosen to do when I know my wife is taking the kids to soccer or running errands or really anytime when she might be driving. How bad would it be to know that because of my text to my wife she ended up having an accident? Horrible right? Especially if she or my kids were injured as a result of my poor choice to knowingly text her when she’s driving.
When I see someone texting when behind the wheel I will often beep and wave at them and point show-ing them that I see what they are doing. Usually they don’t like this and they show me their displeasure with a specific gesture. Trust me when I tell you that I understand that it’s important that you not forget to pick up eggs on the way home. I like eggs too. It’s really not worth the risk that you might die or kill someone before getting to the grocery store all because you had to type “k” into your phone while going 70 through a school zone. Stop the insanity - stop texting people when they are driving!!!

In last month’s article, we discussed the harmful consequences of living in a perpetually stressful environment. Long-term elevated stress levels can lead to high blood sugar, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune system. That is a very unhealthy picture! Fortu-nately, if you find yourself in this situation, there are steps you can take to return your body to a state of optimal health and wellness.
Let’s take high blood pressure as an example. There exist today innovative medications that are very effective in altering the body’s functions in order to return your blood pressure back to normal levels. These medications are very necessary and a great first step in dealing with your high blood pressure. But should we stop there? Do any of these medications actually make you healthy or well? Thinking and practicing as a wellness doc-tor, I would say no. They haven’t done a thing to remove the stress that was causing the high blood pressure in the first place. So we are still unhealthy - unhealthy with a normal blood pressure reading.
The second necessary step in treating our high blood pressure example is unfortunately the dif-ficult one, and the one that is most often ignored. But the health and wellness implications are huge.
To get your body working properly again and able to control its own blood pressure in the fu-ture you need to remove the causative stress. You will need to have an honest look with a wellness chiropractor into areas such as diet and nutri-tion, physical movement and exercise, as well as mental health and wellness. You then need to put in the sweat equity to make these tough chang-

can develop muscle or tendon tears. Obviously, these types of problems can keep you from doing what you love best hence the need for Prehab!
At Body Tempo I am very careful to teach my clients how to warm up properly and fire the appropriate muscle groups prior to working them. This is a proven method to help you prevent wear and tear on your joints. Foam rolling is another great tool for helping roll out tight muscles. This is a type of self myofascial (a fancy word for the fibrous tissue that encloses and separates layers of muscles) release technique. Other self myofascial release techniques which I work through with my clients can also help prevent injury. Myofascial release breaks up “adhesions” in the muscle which may have been created by a lack of proper attention to Prehab techniques. Adhesions are fibrous bands that form between muscle tissues. If untreated they may cause pain, decreased range of motion (ROM), muscle tissue restrictions, and eventually injury. Another Prehab tool is to dedicate some of your time to your smaller postural and stabilizing muscles. If you only focus and work on your mirror muscles (larger visual muscles) they can pull your smaller muscles out of balance and can even stop them from firing appropriately. Again this can cause down time from your sport and may even cause pain.
With the right preparation you can be physically happier and healthier than you may have thought possible. No one plans to become insolvent. We’re Canadians and we believe that with hard work we can own our own home, support our families and retire comfortably. Unfortunately, financial problems are often a result of unexpected life changes such as health issues, job loss and business failure and marital breakdown and hard work sometimes just isn’t enough.
Besides being a rather depressing topic, what exactly is insolvency? The definition varies throughout the world; however, in Canada, being insolvent means:
• You owe at least $1000 (not much by mostpeople’s standards), and
• You are unable to pay your bills when theybecome due (this includes using credit to pay for credit), or you have stopped paying your debts altogether, and/or
• Sellingyourassetswouldnotcoveryourdebts(you own less than you owe).
In 2012 there were a total of 118,398 insolvencies filed in Canada. Insolvency filings represent only a small portion of the actual insolvency problem. According to MasterCard/VISA statistics in 2012 there were 29.2 million MasterCard and VISA cards with balances in Canada and 262,800 of those were at least 90 days behind in payments. These credit cards represent only a small percentage of the debts contributing to insolvency.
Insolvency can be a momentary state in one’s financial life which passes with the acquisition of a new job, a change in the economic times or an adjustment of lifestyle. Whats On MusicCheAp triCk LIVe AT PORT THeATReIf you can get your hands on the vinyl LP “Cheap Trick at Budokan” I highly recommend it.I’m sure you can find a copy at Fascinating Rhythm on Commercial St. Downtown Nanaimo but if not they will likely find a way to help you get it. Of course you can also download it but there’s something about an actual physical album that you just can’t get in a bunch of ones and zeros on a hard drive...but I digress. It still gives me chills hearing, amid the scratches of diamond on vinyl, the excited screams of 12,000 Japanese fans all packed into the Budokan arena in Japan April 1978 waiting for the American rockers to emerge from back-stage. The screams are sporadic at first and reminiscent of the type of feverish or desperate screams previously reserved for The Beatles at the height of their reign. Once (we imagine) the band begins to file onto the stage the roar of the crowd is so loud it almost drowns out the music. When the guitar and drums begin and
lead singer Rick Nielsen begins to belt out “Hello There” the fans really get into it. The magic of the in-terplay between the, very enthusiastic and unabashed, Japanese fans and the energetic and original brand of Rock n Roll that can only be “Cheap Trick” makes this album one of my personal all time favorites. As I recall back in 1978 we had a pretty high end turn-table in the playroom and it was my older brother who actually bought the Budokan album. We would play the album over and over as loud as we could get away with. As a result, every note, every lyric, every nuance of that iconic album is indelibly burned into my brain. The fact that a band as big as Cheap Trick will play the Port Theatre Nanaimo here at the end of February is truly a good sign that Nanaimo is on the map. The Port Theatre is such a great venue both in terms of the intimacy and the acoustics. I can’t wait to share in that space and be in the same room as a band that, for me, was as much apart of being 8 years old as perhaps little league was for others. Yes I’ve been listening to Cheap Trick for 36 years and to me their sound, energy and enthusiasm will never get old. See you at the show and if you can’t make it well...ain’t that a shame.

What I think he meant was that even though you may be a genius it doesn’t really mean much if you don’t have the strength of character to persist in the face of adversity. McLean went on to say that to be successful in life “...you don’t have to be good looking, or smart, or well-connected you just have to be able to “gut it out.”
This concept of “guts” is really, to me, the notion that it’s how we react to adversity that defines us. You may be the smartest person in the room but if you don’t have the ability to soldier on when things get rough you’re doomed to waste away in your parents basement. If you don’t have guts you might as well join the ranks of other smart, good looking, connected people that will never see the light of day because of a lack of resiliency.
I have always taught my sons that you really don’t learn much when you win all the time. It’s the losses in life that give a person his or her gristle. One of the things I love about Nanaimo is that everywhere I go I see people ‘gutting it out.’ We Nanaimoites have grit! We may not be as big as Vancouver, we may not have the Legislature like
Victoria but we have tenacity here in the Harbour City. I recently picked up a copy of the Globe & Mail and was impressed by a Business in Nanai-mo magazine pull-out showcasing this fine city to the rest of Canada. It solidified in my mind that Nanaimo truly is poised to become a world class city. We have all of the ingredients that make a city go from good to great. From arts and culture, to education, to tourism to the amazing natural beauty: Nanaimo has it all.
Nanaimo is changing and growing and through it all becoming a leading center for education, tech-nology, tourism and a shift from resource econ-omy to knowledge economy. Anything a person could want can be found right here the only ques-tion is will people have the guts to reach for it?
