6 What’s Up For Kids March/April 2013

By Ann Gambrell 1. Move old newspapers to the recycle bin. If you have not read them in two days,

the news is old. If you are computerized, you can get the news online. If it was that important you would have already heard or seen it on the news.

2. Sort laundry in baskets so anyone can “do a load”. Take 2-3 plastic laundry baskets to sort whites, colors and dark items. Place delicate items in re-usable zippered mesh bags to keep them from becoming tangled in the wash.

3. Load dirty dishes in the dishwasher. As you prepare a meal, keep water in the sink to soak items used in cooking. Then when you load them into the dish-washer there will be no need to scrub off the food. No dishwasher? Soak them anyway for easier washing later.

4. De-clutter the kitchen junk drawer. Be brutal! Most of the things residing there are useless anyway. Necessary items might include: scissors, stapler, paper clips, food packaging labels, adhesive tape, a few bag twist ties (I said a few!), sticky notes, writing pens and a ruler and/or measuring tape.

5. Sort mail and discard the unnecessary mail. If you know you are not buying anything from that store in the immediate future…recycle the flier/catalog. Only save the grocery ad from the store you frequent. With this economy, you can-not afford to drive around town to save a dollar. Place bills to pay in a folder or other location to pay later.

6. Purge grocery & other store coupons. Coupons tend to accumulate and be-come useless clutter. Use a highlighter pen to accentuate the expiration date. Then keep them where you will remember to use them; near the grocery list or in the car. More will be in the mail next week.

7. Water household plants. Use a soil meter to determine what needs watering at the time. Keep the watering can and liquid fertilizer handy for quick use.

8. Take out the trash. Grab the largest trash container and walk thru the house to empty the smaller wastebaskets into it. Keep a supply of trash bags in the bottom of each trash and recycle container for easy access to replace a soiled bag.

9. Remove trash from your car. Turn an empty tissue box into a trash bag con-tainer. It will hold 6-8 plastic grocery bags, making it easy to clear trash/clutter from your car every 2-3 days. Toss it in a trash can when you reach your desti-nation. If the bags are handy you are more likely to use them. Keep it where you can see it.

10. Pay two or more bills. Keep your bill paying supplies handy; bills, receipt folder, pens, postage stamps and stapler. If you pay your bills online, keep the bill pay folder nearby for easy access.

NOTE: Set a timer to stay focused. Quit when the bell rings. Do five more minutes if time allows. Bit by bit you can do it!! She facilitates weekday and Saturday Clutter Sup-port Groups and teaches organizing classes through the Torrance Adult School. By Kari Doody

Spring break is just around the corner, and as a mom of 3 kids, I know how challenging traveling can be. It’s stressful enough preparing for the trip let alone getting the family in the car or to the airport without one of them hav-ing a complete meltdown. We as parents understand the rules that we must follow in order to have a safe journey, but kids may not know. So this spring break take a different approach and get the family on the same page before you start your travels. Here are some tips to make your travels more enjoyable:

Plan ahead. Sit your kids down, explain to them what the day will be like in advance.

Let them know that they need to be courteous of others traveling as well.

In an airport, make sure kids don’t run around. For their safety and oth-ers.

If there are elevators, make sure your kids do not push all of the but-tons!

When using the restroom make sure they know to wait in line patiently and pick up after themselves.

When boarding with small kids, always try to get on early if possible. Have your seating arrangements figured out before you get on the plane.

Make sure your kids have enough activities to keep them busy on the plane. Pack a backpack with activities for each kid the day before so they have plenty to keep them busy.

Remind kids not to kick the chairs in front of them or mess with the ta-bles. Ask them how they would feel if someone was kick their chair?

Remind kids that they need to keep their voices down. Inside voices only.

Traveling is never easy with kids but these tips can help you make it easier on everyone. Happy travels!

We aren’t born with good manners, they need to be cultivated at a young age and rein-forced throughout young adulthood. Whatever level your child is at, she can help them improve their skills and confidence – and they can have fun doing it with my age appropriate games and activities. By Kerri Zane The spring holiday’s are around the corner and for my daughters and me that means an awesome winter ski vacation. This season there are two California resorts offer-ing great winter getaway packages for families. NEARBY Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are offering a program called Kids Ski / Ride for Free. It is good on weekdays all season long, including spring break! The program entitles families to one free kid’s lift ticket voucher for each paying adult lift ticket. Free kids tickets are valid for kids 12 years and under. Lift tickets are good for either or both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. Packages are good only at Big Bear par-

ticipating lodges and arrivals must be Sun-day through Thursday and skiing or snow-boarding Monday through Friday. Mid-week skiing is especially valuable with no wait time at the chair lifts and the runs are wide open. Visit www.BigBear.com or call 800-424-4232 as certain restrictions ap-ply. For more details about the Kids Ski / Ride for Free package or Kids. Get Out-doors. Win. program including a list of Outdoor Fun Spots locations, prize listings and official rules.

12 What’s Up For Kids March/April 2013

By Michael Malgeri My parents gave me many gifts, one of which I was determined to re-gift to our chil-dren when I became a parent. "Son, you can tell me anything, do you understand? No matter what it is, I'll always be there for you." That was my Dad speaking to me in my earliest memories. Al-though at times he may have gotten more than he asked for...I went to him with some WHOPPERS...he was always true to his word...except of course when I scratched his Mario Lanza record. When the time was right, I made the same offer to our children. The nightly "put me to bed" ritual generally ended with, "anything you want to talk about buddy?" The early days were filled with cute, pout-full confessions like, "Dad, I didn't floss on Wednesday," but trust building was the primary goal and every tender searching of the soul was taken seriously. Nowadays, in the middle of glorious adolescence, the groundwork my wife and I laid with our children is paying off with free and open communication. The problem is, I'm soon to be arrested as an accomplice unless I turn our son in for knocking off that automated teller machine...joking! While I won't disclose personal information, beyond publically available mug shots, it seems that "whoppers" span generations as I suspect they always have. The stories I told my Dad are coming back to me through my son, and I suspect my sister is now worried that our daughter is about to divulge her aunt's intimate thoughts...did you guys get that...my sister is our daughter’s, never mind. Anyway, you guys are good parents and whether it's long term cultivation or bright hot lights in a cold damp room, it's important to get to the bottom of things...hopefully before the mug shots. Editor’s Note: Along with “On Dad’s Watch” Michael has also writtten a series of books he calls “Bedtime Stories about Capitalism,” which teaches kids about honest profit making. The invite read: You are invited to Jayneoni's, "The Boom Boom Room". Sounds like a great club right? It turned out it was an incredible club, for expecting and the new, modern moms & dads that is.

The event was so hot it had a secret location until you rsvped. The Univer-sal Hilton was the venue for this Pre-Golden Globes upscale gifting lounge put on by Jayneoni Moore, celebrity style expert and event planner. The

event benefited First Book (www.FirstBook.org), an organization that is helping to build libraries for low income pre-k and kindergarten class-rooms in honor of the precious lives lost in Sandy Hook.

One was given major SWAG from some very recognized companies such as Leap Frog & Play-Doh as well as from companies that you will start to see all over such as Tickle Time which has an amazing mineral powder sunblock, Molly's Suds, a Mom owned, truly natural laundry powder to Dad-dyScrubs, unique gifts for new and expec-tant Dads and many more. To top off this well thought out event , there were kids sta-tions with art and craft projects so that the parents could actually talk to the ven-dors. Health & WellnessHealth & WellnessHealth & WellnessHealth & Wellness How Dinner Can Determine Your Mood!

By JJ Flizanes

I am always looking for ways to communicate the very real facts that what you eat determine your health, your weight loss or gain, and more impor-tantly your emotions and mood. At the end of last year, a good friend of mine (a McDonald’s eating mother of 2) posted an article on Facebook that was written by a mom titled “The gluten made her do it: How going gluten free saved my daughter's mental health.” As a mother of two, this article got her attention.

People think it’s still a fad AND have no idea of the emotional im-pact of gluten. Last weekend my husband and I spent a few hours at Barnes and Noble to have a warm drink and read through some books. A recommended book (that I didn’t think I needed to read be-cause I have been gluten free for almost 5 years) made it into my hands and I was shocked and

amazed at the first two chapters. Wheat Belly: Lose the wheat, lose the weight and find your path back to health by William Davis, MD does a great job of making some observations about the changes in our diet over the last 50 years that even shocked me. Everyone should read this book. What if I told you that your emotional attachment was actually a biochemical addiction? And while everyone will not respond the same to it, it’s is without a doubt a major cause of disease, behavioral issues, skin problems, chronic joints pain and weight loss resistance. More information can be found in my free 30 Day Jumpstart Program on invisiblefitness.com. I am also on Facebook (http://tinyurl.com/7vo8qmm ) helping people choose the best brands of gluten free products to help them navigate trying on a new way of eating.

JJ Flizanes is the Director of Invisible Fitness. An Amazon best-selling author of Fit 2 Love: How to Get Physically, Emotionally, and Spiritually Fit to Attract the Love of Your Life, and author of Knack Absolute Abs: Routines for a Fit and Firm Core, JJ was named Best Personal Trainer in Los Angeles for 2007 by Elite Traveler Magazine. She is an expert for About.com and has been featured in many national magazines such as Shape, Fitness, Muscle and Fitness HERS, Elegant Bride, and Women’s Health as well as NBC, CBS, KTLA and Fox 11. Cookin’ Corner Succulent Lemon and Herb Marinade

By Phoebe Schilla

Sick of winter? Try my all time favorite go-to marinade that I use year round. It’s as delicious on fish and vegetables as it is on chicken. During the doldrums of winter, parsley and lemon combine for an uplifting-lemony bright flavor. During the summer months I love using Basil as the herb for a definitive taste of summer. Paired with grilled ripe tomatoes it is divine. The key is to use both fresh lemon juice and lemon zest to boost the flavor. Succulent Lemon and Herb Marinade for Chicken 1 ½# boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts Marinade 1/3 cup of olive oil Zest and juice of one lemon* 2 fat cloves or garlic, chopped or 2 tsp. minced 1/3 packed cup of Basil, Parsley, Dill or Cilantro leaves 1 tsp. of salt ½ tsp. of ground black pepper Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional) Combine all of the ingredients in a blender or cuisinart and blend until the herbs are finely chopped. Don’t have a blender handy? Don’t worry….Just chop the herbs finely by hand and combine with the rest of the ingredients. Pour the marinade over the chicken and let marinate at room temperature for a minimum of an hour or overnight in the fridge. Heat your grill to me-dium high heat. Once the grill is hot, place the chicken on the grill, turning once. *I love using my microplane rasp to zest the lemon—you only need the yel-low zest and not the bitter white pith that is underneath. If you do not have a microplane rasp, then you may use a regular vegetable peeler to carefully remove the zest from the lemon. Editor’s Note: Chef Phoebe loved cooking from an early age growing up outside of Portland, Maine. Her mother and aunt were accomplished self-taught cooks who welcomed curious Phoebe into their kitchens. From tapping her own maple syrup from trees in the yard to baking homemade bread, Phoebe learned at an early age about the delicious benefits of whole, natural, seasonal foods. Phoebe lives in San Francisco with her husband and their daughter. In her spare time she enjoys read-ing cookbooks, traveling, studying yoga practices and, of course, learning about all the latest culinary happenings from around the globe.
