Popcorn inquiry lab exit directions1. In groups of 3, develop a plan to determine the effects of

the environment on the percentage of water in a popcorn kernel by mass OR the percentage of corn that pops in four different types (different environments) of popcorn (problem). Make a prediction (answer your problem question). Write down your procedure including the data you want to collect. Get approval from your instructor before beginning the experiment. Collect and record your data. As you work through the lab, write in your journal any questions that come to mind. Be prepared to share your questions at the end of class today.

2. Record your work on your own paper.3. Finish clean-up by _______.4. If you finish early, determine what type of graph(s) would

best analyze your data and make a sketch of it on graph paper. Also, write a conclusion about your results.

5. Homework: Finish graph(s) and conclusion

Why are we doing this lab?

• NEW: Content Standard:   9-12 INQB Investigate Scientific progress requires the use of various methods appropriate for answering different kinds of research questions, a thoughtful plan for gathering data needed to answer the question, and care in collecting, analyzing, and displaying the data.

• OLD: 2.1.2 Understand how to plan and conduct systematic and complex scientific investigations

• CPSD DU: While scientists in different disciplines may appear to "do science" differently, they all use the core skills of scientific investigation (i.e. observing, hypothesizing, collecting data, interpreting data, and communicating results) in the research they do.

• To encourage student discourse
