“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”
Psalm 133 vs1
There are many Saints that are celebrated in October and one of those is
St. Wilfrid. He became Archbishop of York and he is remembered on 12th October. He
was known for bringing the Roman Catholic church and the Anglo Saxon church
together. At our recent Churches Together in Easingwold and District (CTED) annual
service, the speaker, Fr Henry Wansbrough, also spoke with passion about the
various ways in which the churches are looking at their similarities to see how the
different churches can work together. We are fortunate in Easingwold that the different
churches do work well together and the congregation at the service included
representatives from all four churches.
Wilfrid was at the Synod of Whitby in 664 AD where the date of Easter was settled.
The Celtic church used one date and the Roman Catholics used another. It was
decided at this synod to follow the Roman calendar (there is still disagreement
between the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church on this matter). Wilfrid
did not have an easy time though; he brought the two sections of the church together
but insisted that the Roman Church was in overall authority. He never saw the validity
of the Celtic bishops and refused to be consecrated bishop by a Celtic bishop. We can
imagine that this must have caused offence, but Wilfrid was able to overcome all of
this and unite the church in Britain.
I hope that the next Archbishop of York will be able to help unite the different
denominations. The discernment process for him/her is well underway and the church
PCC has been asked for its input as to the sort of person to be appointed. I am not
sure when the announcement will be made but I hope that the new Archbishop will
have the integrity to listen carefully to the other denominations and help us work
together worshipping the same God. I hope that he/she says what he/she feels is right
and then work with the sections of the community that disagree with him/her and
come to an amicable solution.
There were divisions amongst the early Christians and divisions through the
centuries but hearing people like Fr Wansbrough helps us to think about our
understanding of others and to look at how we can work together.
Every blessing for October
THANK YOU AND MOVING ON
Having finished my training in the benefice of Easingwold with Raskelf, I would like to pass on my thanks for all the support and encouragement that I have received over the years.
I especially would like to thank Rev’d Margaret Young for all the wisdom and knowledge given to me which will be put to good use in my new placement at Skelton with Shipton and Newton, Linton-on-Ouse and Beningbrough.
Over the years of my discernment and working as a deacon, Rev’d Chris Peel has given me constant solid guidance of what is needed in the Diaconal ministry. This has given me a good foundation on which to build, which is invaluable. I am also very grateful that Chris has agreed to continue with this as I discover more about the parishes that I have been called to work in and face new challenges.
I would like to thank you all for the generous gift which will come in handy when I pick up my paint brushes again.
After 39 years association with Easingwold church, it has always encouraged me to see how the Holy Spirit moves people to work together toward a common goal of bringing God’s Kingdom here on Earth.
Thank you, God Bless, Rev’d Catherine Toase

“IF YOU GO DOWN
TO THE WOODS TODAY”!?
Well, actually, it was at the
Easingwold Parish Church
Rooms recently, where we were
“sure of a big surprise”, in the
form of a “Teddy Bears’ Picnic”!
Our ‘Church Mice’ and ‘Ignite’ group youngsters, along with children baptised in
the last three years and others, had been invited to come along with their
favourite teddy bears, so there was no need to “go in disguise”. They were all
“sure of a treat”! And some grown-ups brought their teddies too!
There were “lots of marvellous things to eat and wonderful games to play”, with
many toys, trikes to ride and a lawnmower to push. They enjoyed the parable of
the lost sheep, acted out with toys, and had an exciting ‘pass the parcel’ game,
before tucking into the picnic. There was also a competition, with prizes, for the
‘best-dressed’ and the ‘oldest’ (85 years!) teddy bears.
Our grateful appreciation for a very enjoyable event goes to Rev’d Deacon
Charlotte Cranfield, who arranged and led it, with assistance from Parish
Church members.

PRAYER CORNER
Prayer is at the heart of what the church is about and the prayer corner in St John’s continues to be
used regularly. Please write the names of people you would like to be remembered in the book
there. We also have a prayer chain, where a number of people pray for those in special need. If you
would like prayers for yourself or another, in church or on our confidential Prayer Circle, please
contact Deacon Lottie Cranfield on 824399.
Please include in your prayers this month:
1. Those unsung heroes in the area who raise money for a variety of charities during the year; the Shoe Box appeal
2. All who make music for our enjoyment; those who belong to the amateur dramatics
3 All businesses situated along Long Street;
4. Raskelf village hall and its activities

Open The Book at Easingwold Primary School
10th and 24th October
“Open the Book” celebrated its 20th birthday earlier this year. It began in Bedford in 1999 and quickly became a national charity with 15,000 volunteer storytellers across the UK. See: biblesociety.org.uk/get-involved/open-the-book where you can also find plenty of further information.
OASIS Café at the Methodist Church on Chapel Street
Friday 25th October 2019
Our OASIS café is open once again and is ready to welcome you if you come. It is our pleasure to serve you tea, coffee or hot chocolate, made as you like it. This month we support another worthwhile local organisation—EDDCA—who provide so many people with much needed voluntary support. The introduction of the minibus has been an invaluable service for everyone from cancer sufferers to those who would not get out on their own. Please come and support them.
Shoe Boxes 2019
It's that time of year again when we are beginning to think about
filling shoe boxes for Samaritan's Purse. These boxes are so
appreciated by the children who receive them and we send them to
a variety of countries overseas.
The supplied boxes (and information leaflets) will be available this month from the
back of church, or you can cover an ordinary shoe box with Christmas paper if you
prefer.
There are five categories of gifts that can be included in your box – to wear (e.g. hats
and gloves); to eat (sweets must have a far ahead best before date; no chocolate as it
melts!); toiletries (e.g. soap, toothpaste); anything educational (e.g. pens, paper,
colouring books); and something for fun (e.g. small toy, hair clips). Please look at the
back of church for items given by others to be used to help fill your box – especially
knitteds from the Knit and Natter Group and friends of the church.
Please read the leaflet carefully as there are some items which cannot be included e.g. liquids of any kind, stuffed hand-knitted toys and war toys.
There will be no charge for the empty box but if you are able to include the suggested donation for transport that would be helpful. HOWEVER, if that is too much to ask when you are providing the contents of your box don't worry, still fill your box.
If you are not filling a shoe box, or providing bits for others to use in theirs, please could you consider giving a donation which would help towards the cost of the boxes and the £5 that has to be added to each box for carriage. Please put any donation in an envelope labelled "Shoe Boxes" and hand it in at church. These boxes give such joy to those who receive them.

BIBLE READING FELLOWSHIP NOTES We are all encouraged to read the Bible to help us in our spiritual journey. Where do we start? It is quite daunting. This is where the Bible Reading Fellowship can help us. ‘New Daylight’ is a daily read-ing of a short section from the Bible with an explanation of the reading. This helps the reader to un-derstand it, and it makes life easier for us because we don’t have to find it in the Bible ourselves.
Please contact Gina Smith, either in Church or by phone. (01347 823843). She can show you exam-ples, and, if you decide you would like to try it, she will order it for you and deliver it. It only costs £13.80 a year for 365 daily readings – less than 4p a day.
