St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School Where every child is special Weekly News for the week beginning Monday 6th February 2017 It’s been a damp week but that certainly does not apply to our learning or the fun we’ve been having in school! We started the week with Year 3 on a soggy but wonderful walk of discovery around Guildford on the trail of Alice in Wonderland and finding out much, much more besides! The week also saw a trip to Guildford by Year 1 St Cloud, following in St David’s footsteps from last week and visiting the Guildford Museum as part of their topic work around toys. I am looking forward to my visit to Year 1 on Tuesday next week with a very special visitor – 50 year old Snowy the now not so well stuffed or white polar bear – and a fine collection of Tri-ang train set accessories – toys from my youth! I hope that your children will have told you that their dining experience at school has been vastly improved this week! We have had a real focus on manners and re-arranged the lunch hall to make it as pleasant a place as possible to share a meal with your friends. The resounding vote in worship this afternoon is that the changes are working! Part of the new lunch arrangements includes having the library open each lunchtime for children to go in and read and that is proving very popular too! We all enjoyed a wonderful worship led by St George’s class yesterday complete with live Shakespeare and examples of the children’s own fabulous writing! Next week brings Safer Internet day – an opportunity to remind everyone of the wonders and dangers of technology and how we can all keep ourselves and our children safe online. Weekly News for the week beginning Monday 6th February 2017

It’s been a damp week but that certainly does not apply to our learning or the fun we’ve been

having in school!

We started the week with Year 3 on a soggy but wonderful walk of discovery around Guildford

on the trail of Alice in Wonderland and finding out much, much more besides! The week also saw

a trip to Guildford by Year 1 St Cloud, following in St David’s footsteps from last week and

visiting the Guildford Museum as part of their topic work around toys. I am looking forward to

my visit to Year 1 on Tuesday next week with a very special visitor – 50 year old Snowy the

now not so well stuffed or white polar bear – and a fine collection of Tri-ang train set

accessories – toys from my youth!

I hope that your children will have told you that their dining experience at school has been

vastly improved this week! We have had a real focus on manners and re-arranged the lunch hall

to make it as pleasant a place as possible to share a meal with your friends. The resounding

vote in worship this afternoon is that the changes are working! Part of the new lunch

arrangements includes having the library open each lunchtime for children to go in and read and

that is proving very popular too!

We all enjoyed a wonderful worship led by St George’s class yesterday complete with live

Shakespeare and examples of the children’s own fabulous writing!

Next week brings Safer Internet day – an opportunity to remind everyone of the wonders and

dangers of technology and how we can all keep ourselves and our children safe online. Reception

class Grandparents have a very special tea to look forward and Year 3 will be enjoying all the

whacky wonders of their Madhatters Tea Party and then… it will be half term!

Do you have a smartphone, tablet or laptop that that you no longer need and are willing to donate? Your device would make a real difference to a school in Mukono.

In Mukono, children learn to read from the blackboard. Many schools have no books! No reading schemes, no children's story books and in one Reception class there were 84 children sitting in rows learning to read from the blackboard! Do you have any children's picture books we could take?

Music GCSE focuses on Western music but the students are unable to hear western music. Do you have any unwanted CD's of western music? If you do, please bring them to the school office on Monday. Thank you.

Parents evenings for this term are being held on Thursday 23rd February and Monday 27th. It is the best opportunity for you to see the progress your child is making and for you to share any celebrations and concerns. Children in Year 6 will be asked to join their parents for the consultation as they take responsibility for their own learning.

We are using our online booking system again for this year’s Parent evenings. Bookings will open on Monday. You will need to go on to scopay.com, log in and the open the parent evening tab in order to book your slot. Bookings for both evenings will be available. Any questions or it doesn’t work then please contact the Office.

Thank you.

The children in St William and St Salvatore have invited their

grandparents to a special tea party on Wednesday at 1.30 to 3.00pm

in the Infant Hall. There will be lovely food and enthusiastic

entertainment and all the grandparents have to do is turn up, bring

something from their travels to show the children and enjoy

themselves.

It is a wonderful opportunity to spend time in school with your

grandchildren and we really hope you will be able to join us.

For catering purposes can you please ensure that you let the class

teachers know on Monday morning at the latest if you will be there.

Thank you.
