Where in the world is Africa? Summer Term Y5/6 GEOGRAPHY As GEOGRAPHERS, we will be looking at Africa’s place geographically, socially and economically. We will look at the world’s biomes and focus on three of Africa’s iconic areas – The Serengeti, the Sahara Desert and The Congolese jungle. We will also be looking at the river Nile and why it important for tourism, industry and farming. Children will also find out about ‘Fair Trade’ and how it is important for the people of Africa. ART As ARTISTS children will explore the use of colour, quality of line and repetitive patterns associated with African art. These will the form part of the back drop for the Y6 production. We will also look at the use of silhouettes within art and create some beautiful African sun sets using chalk pastels. COMPUTING As PROGRAMMERS children will explore a range of different functions on scratch – creating animations using African imagery. Children will also working on their reasoning by debugging existing programs. DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY As DESIGNERS and MAKERS children will be making a range o props and items for the Y production ‘Peace Child’. Using descriptions from th script, children will research th how to make their own props sourcing suitable materials an utilising relevant construction techniques. ENGLISH As READERS and WRITERS children will be producing range of fiction and non-fictio text linked to Africa includin non-chronological reports letters of complaint, diaries an persuasive advertisements. Year 5 carrying out and excitin extended narrative looking th animated film ‘The Lion King’. PE As ATHLETES children will be busy preparing for sports day. They will be working hard on their agility, balance and co-ordinations; applying this to a number of field events. They will be looking at the mechanics of sprinting and efficient running, as well as successful baton exchanges.
