I came to physical therapy during a point in my life where I thought I would be experiencing pure joy. I came in 3 months after I had our first baby. Beginning on the day I delivered him, I experienced pain in my hips and lower back, which I had never had before. The pain in my hips was uncomfortable when simply moving from a sitting to a standing position. Furthermore, carrying my newborn caused pain in my lower back that would make me want to cry every night.

Coming to Coury and Buehler truly was a breath of fresh of air. My therapist, Roland Dulla, PT, DPT, OCS, was not only able to identify the areas of pain, but he was able to identify the CAUSE of my pain. This, was the most remarkable part of the process. I did not fully appreciate how many other muscles contributed to this pain that was so foreign and progressive. In slowly identifying these causes, he developed a treatment plan that would actually produce results that were palpable. In addition to the therapists, the assistants who help carry out the treatment plans are truly the back bone for assuring that patients are progressing. Alicia, who worked closely with Ro, always made certain that I was feeling the stretch or the exercise in the appropriate muscle area. If not, she was quick to make personalized recommendations so that I would perform the exercises with maximal effect.

I was truly impressed by the level of professionalism everyone displayed throughout the entire practice. This professionalism, organization and respect started with the very first phone call I made, and extended to the girls who operated and managed the front desk, to all the therapists treating patients, and to all the assistants who were supervising patients.

After six weeks of personalized therapy sessions, I am left with a baby boy who is active and growing rapidly, and the ability to carry him

with confidence and without pain.

for all of those who walked with us at the Arthritis Walk 2016! We had a fantastic team and a whole lot of fun! Check out our newsroom for the slideshow with

SHOPPING FOR THE PERFECT SHOE

12

3 45FLAT FEET NORMAL ARCH HIGH ARCH

By Kimmi Dao, PT, DPT

There you go! These are 5 things you can look for when choosing the perfect pair of running shoes! Never again will you have to feel the wrath of regret of buying an expensive cool pair of running shoes that do nothing but hurt! Do you have any recommendations of your favorite shoes for your foot type? Sharing is caring! Email me at [email protected]!

Who gets confused when they shop for a new pair of running shoes? I completely understand how complicated the decision can be, especially since the running market has boomed in the last few years. We now have hundreds of high tech and cool shoes to choose from. How many of you have fallen into the trap and picked the cool pair that looked hip but made your feet feel like it walked 1000 miles through the Amazon jungle while a group of monkeys threw rocks at your feet? Let me save you the headache and share with you 5 things to look for when shopping for running shoes!

1. HEEL

Your heel should fit snug but not tight.

2. INSTEP

The instep should hold comfortably and firmly against the top of your foot. If you feel like it is too tight and you feel pressure spots at the top of your foot, try a different way of lacing up your shoe. If that does not help, it is time to say goodbye and move on to trying the next shoe.

3. WIDTH

You should be able to wiggle your toes side to side and not feel like your toes are squeezing against each other. The widest part of your shoe from your big toe to your little toe should be within the insole of the shoe. Your feet swell when you run so you need the extra room.

4. LENGTH

Make sure there is a thumbs width of space from the top of your longest toe to the front of the shoe. Just like with the width, you have to keep in mind you need space for your feet when they swell.

5. ARCH SUPPORT

There are 3 different types of arches. Low arch (flat feet), normal arch, and high arch. There is a type of shoe that is best for each type of foot arch.

You can find out your foot arch by wetting the bottom of your feet and making a footprint on a wet paper towel. Match your print with the images above to find out your arch type.

LOW ARCH (FLAT FEET):

Those with a low arch tend to land on the outside of their foot and roll onto the inside of their foot as they transfer their weight, which is called overpronation. Motion control running shoes will help runners with a low arch (flat feet) because it adds support to the inside of your shoe which will help add more stability and prevent less foot rotation.

NORMAL ARCH:

Those with a normal arch tend to land on the middle to outside of the heel and rolls slightly inward to the ball of the feet. This the natural way of running. Stability running shoes are great for runners with a normal arch because it adds the right amount of stability needed but allows the foot to move in its natural pattern. It also has a slight amount of cushion to absorb the shock.

HIGH ARCH: Those with a high arch tend to land on the outside of their foot and carry the rest of the weight along the outside side of their foot to their little toe. The foot barely has any rotation which is called underpronation. Cushioned running shoes are great for runners with a high arch because when the foot lacks rotation, it is unable to absorb the shock. Cushioned running shoes allows for extra flexibility, room for pronation, and cushion to absorb the excess shock.

One of my go-to lunches is this red quinoa salad with roasted broccoli and cauliflower. It’s an easily prepared meal that’s refreshing for a hot day or a healthy party appetizer. The recipe makes about 4-6 servings so it’s great for families or leftovers! You can also add your choice of 4 oz. of lean protein on the side to round out the meal.
