From the chart: Perhaps you know the city of Deventer in the Netherlands more for its honey cake or carpets than for its samplers. Located along the east bank of the river the Yssel, in the province of Overyssel, Deventer is relatively far away from the traditional sampler-producing provinces of Holland—Zeeland, Groningen en Friesland. Deventer did, however, have a rather impressive sampler-making tradition which lasted from about 1760 to 1860. Earlier samplers may exist, but so far we are not aware of them. The Deventer Museum has a unique collection of 18 samplers all made by girls coming from one Deventer family. The oldest samplers were made by Hendrika Lamberts (1755-1800) in 1766 and some years later by her twin sisters Geertruyda and Jacoba. The later ones were made in the 1790's -1800's by their nieces. Several of these samplers are in the museum’s online collection at www.historischmuseumdeventer.nl.collectie/zoeken; go to zoeken, fill in merklap or stoplap. The cover sampler from the GigiR collection was stitched by I D L (Ida Dorothea Lamberts, 1795-1867) in 1806. Her work strongly resembles another Deventer sampler by H J L 1805. These could be sister samplers with the very elegant flower patterns/ images, urns and the Chinese vase. Both girls were nieces of the first generation Lamberts sisters of the 1760-1770's, as discussed in the informative blog by Martin Ex. Their samplers include the Deventer coat of arms, the eagle, in the upper right corner. Although we know nothing about E H, the maker of the 1811 sampler pictured above, she also stitched the distinctive Chinese vase, and myriad urns/baskets with abundant bouquets. Other similarities are the small alphabet and numerals, fruit baskets, dual patterns with rose petals, eight-sided star, three-lobed heart and acorn border. Many Deventer sampler-makers also stitched elaborate darning samplers. Both charts are included in this booklet. All materials and instructions are printed on the inside and back covers.

I don’t remember ever seeing a sampler where the needleworker’s name was Ida, my maternal grandmother’s name. She was German. That, and the beautify of this sampler, entice me to stitch this sampler. I love so many of the motifs. And Jacqueline’s sampler below is even more enticing.
Jacqueline’s beautiful reproduction … this captivates me so … I look forward to watching her progress. It’s interesting to note that the original was stitched on uneven weave linen, and how different it looks on even weave linen in Jacqueline’s sampler.

Sampler Season
While it is springtime here in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere, it is definitely Sampler Season everywhere, evidenced by the fact that there were so many amazingly beautiful samplers introduced at the Nashville Needlework Market this year. Oh, my goodness! It makes me want to stitch a half dozen of them right now! And as slow as I am with the remaining neuropathy in my hands, I’ll be lucky to stitch one or two, but I can dream … and I can show you just a few of my favorites and hopefully make you itching to stitch these as well. I hesitate to show just a few, never wanting to slight another beauty, but here goes … and I’ve done a silk conversion for each of these as well. As you know if you read this newsletter regularly, I love to stitch samplers in silk. The time I get to spend with my needle is really so limited, and so precious, that I want to enjoy each moment to its fullest, and that is best accomplished with linen and silk. And we are so very fortunate in today’s world having such beautiful linens and silks available at our fingertips. So in no particular order, these are just a few of my favorites. These spotlighted samplers will serve as our April Samplers of the Month and, therefore, available for the15% SOM discount for purchase of 2 of the 3 “kit” parts.
Innocence 1840 from Cross Stitch Antiques $20, 172 x 281 ~ We were privileged to host a class with Kathleen Littleton of Cross Stitch Antiques in March, and this photo was taken with the original and reproduction side-by-side. You can see by their relative size that the original was stitched on uneven weave linen. You can also see how absolutely stunning Kathleen’s reproduction is. I can’t wait to stitch this … waiting for a new high-count linen!
I know that some of you prefer a lighter linen ~ and Kathleen’s model is not on light fabric; sometimes the camera just plays tricks on us. She actually used Lakeside’s V. Meadow Rue, which is shown on the right along with our silk conversion. To my eye, a darker linen is preferred when stitching with such glorious rich jewel tones. Look at that border! And the central floral spray! Magnificent! It will be a true joy to stitch. Silks as shown, a combination of Belle Soie, Dinky Dyes & Gumnuts, $120.50;
Gloriana’s Tudors, $104.50. Linen prices vary depending on count & type.

A Saviour’s Praise by Shakespeare’s Peddler
This sampler is unique in so many ways ~ the border is fabulous! Have you ever seen such a fun border? And I typically don’t like them because they can be repetitive and boring ~ but not this one! Oh, my! Love all the words incorporated into the border … love the verses/prayers … love the red birds and the reindeer … love the ship and the house incorporated into the border! But the most amazing thing about this sampler is it’s Theresa’s original design. It is not a reproduction! Well, I couldn’t wait to start it, and so I did, in Tudor silks on fine linen. The year is designed into the top right corner, where I always begin, and so now I’m committed to having to finish this this year! We shall see.

Here’s another sampler that took my breath away … the first time I saw it on the Internet and even more so in person! When it was presented online, I couldn’t determine whether it was a reproduction. Well, like “A Saviour’s Praise,” this, too, is an original design ~ designed by Kimberly for this frame, which she’s had for a number of years, waiting for the perfect something for it. Well, she knocked it out of the park, I think. It will be such fun to stitch, don’t you think?

Nicola will only be teaching Bathya on one visit to the US, at The Attic and at Sassy Jacks Stitchery, in 2019. This will be the only opportunity you have to learn from Nicola how she stitched this sampler to achieve a truly reversible finish.
Bathya is a very special sampler with an amazing history - please see this video where Witney Antiques talks about the sampler shortly into the film. Bathya is also featured in many reference books.
Bathya stitched her sampler with 15 vibrant shades of silks, ingeniously devising stitch patterns and motifs. There is so much to delight in her sampler. She used a wide repertoire of stitches of varying intricacy. The stitches include two different versions of reversible cross stitch ~ one forms a cross on the reverse with a vertical stitch on the left and the other a four-sided stitch on the reverse. She also used double back stitch and diagonal double back stitch. These stitches appear plaited from the front and as two parallel rows of back stitch on the reverse ~ you might know them as closed herringbone. Other stitches used were double-sided Italian stitch; alternating double back stitch in groups of three, which represents the Trinity; detached buttonhole; french knots and satin stitch. Bathya’s whitework bands are particularly elegant. Narrow whitework bands were an important part of a stitcher’s repertoire; they were used on collar bands both as an adornment and as stiffening so that the collars would stand proud. It is important to us that we have smaller groups so that everyone has unrushed time to spend with Nicola, so class sizes will be limited.
You will learn the techniques needed to re-create this stunning reversible sampler. Stitch count, 140 x 490.

A Very Unique Sampler from Gigi
PAGE30MARY KNOWLES 1824 ~ THE FINDING OF MOSES $24, 257 x 237 ~ This very unique sampler, reproduced with DMC, Weeks, and Gentle Arts cottons in the brown tones shown, is stitched and charted mostly over 1 linen thread. We think we found the perfect linen for this remarkable reproduction: 30ct Legacy linen, shown below. I wish that you could touch this linen because you will fall in love with it. So much of what we experience while stitching appeals to our tactile sense, and with this elegant linen your sense of touch will certainly be enhanced. This linen is very good for stitching over 1. If you prefer a 36ct or 40ct, the over-one parts might be more easily accomplished with a continental stitch ~ AND you could finish more quickly, only needing half as many stitches.
Above, the threads as charted ~ below, our silk conversion ~ both shown on the very beautiful 30ct Legacy linen we recommend.

At the recent Nashville Market, purchasing packets of Pat’s Favorite Needle from Yarn Tree, one of our industry’s fine distributors, made me eligible for a drawing to win this limited-edition Precious Moments figurine ~ and to my surprise, my name was drawn as the winner! Needless to say, that email made my day … on a day that held a difficult memory, for it was that day a year ago that I was diagnosed with ovarian/fallopian tube/peritoneal cancer. So I am honored and thrilled beyond measure to be able to display this sweet figurine on the front table in The Attic ~ and to include here information on how you, too, may own one of these very limited Precious Moments collectibles. At the same time you are supporting a good cause ~ Pat says that the proceeds from the figurine go to the Precious Moments Foundation and to a humanitarian fund.

I am thrilled to show you Rose’s beautiful finish of this amazing sampler. There are so many beautiful elements in this sampler, but the border is very definitely at the top of the list, with its double satin-stitch edging to the inner undulating floral border that features a variety of flowers that would be a pleasure to stitch. Showing you Rose’s sampler is very timely, with the excitement over the forthcoming release of the 2019 Queen

Seeing Kathleen’s antique sampler, and her reproduction, side by side was so intriguing, the fact that the original was stitched on an uneven-weave linen … and the magnificence in the central poppy that Kathleen was able to capture in her replication. Stunning!

This My Big Toe Design from 2018, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, so represents my thoughts today, as I look back on this past year. The surgery was a year ago today, when things looked pretty grim, afraid then to really verbalize how bleak things were. And today, with God’s grace and the love and support from so many of you, I am feeling great, ebullient, so blessed, grateful, and gaining strength each day … and growing my white hair back! Thank you for your loving support. I hope to be able to pay it forward, all that has been done for me. God is good.
Granddaughter Hannah is attending NAU in Flagstaff and is on their gymnastics team … they held an event a few weeks ago just a few miles away, and we got to meet Avery, her new boyfriend … and we approved!
Brother Jerry and SIL Nancy have returned to their home in Wisconsin. It’s always a sad time for me … we have such a good time while they’re here.
