North Salem Vikings! North Salem High School is a learning community in which we believe ALL students can be successful. The effort to nurture this belief begins with helping incoming freshmen transition into our school and supporting them intellectually, socially, and personally through their senior year. Our goal is graduation for all students!

The North Salem High School Course Catalogue is designed to assist you in planning your course selections for the 2020-21 school year. Plan your classes for next year accurately and pay close attention to the following procedures:

* First, review the required classes that you expect to take.* Next, check the graduation requirements with the copy of your transcript to see if you are on

track to graduate.* Next, select classes that support your future education and career goals.* Consult your parents, teachers and counselors—each are a valuable resource to help you in

your decision-making.

Academic Forecasting (the selecting of courses for the 2020-21 school year) will be held during the school day at North Salem on March 2-18. During social studies classes, current freshmen (9th grade), sophomores (10th grade), and juniors (11th grade) will complete their academic forecasting.

Each spring North counselors visit Houck, Parrish, and Waldo middle schools to help register students for the next school year. Incoming freshmen (current 8th graders) will complete forecasting at their respective schools. Future Viking Night will be on February 19th at North Salem High School. Eighth grade students and their parents will receive a letter and a “save the date” invitation postcard with more information as the date draws closer. Mark your calendar and plan to attend!

Plan your future carefully. Your decisions today will influence your schedule next year. What you select as courses this spring determine your future learning opportunities and your classes for next year. Vikings, don’t forget to make time to participate in clubs, activities, leadership opportunities, athletics, and performing arts. Please do not hesitate to obtain help from our staff and take advantage of all that North Salem High School has to offer.

Drama - Theatre ArtsThe ability to work in Theatre Arts is a burning desire for many students at the high school level. North Salem High School offers excellent courses in Introduction to Theatre, Fundamentals of Acting, Advanced Theatre, and Technical Theatre to help meet these needs. The classes are taught by professionally trained staff who have themselves worked at the highest level of stage, film, radio, and television. In addition to the classes offered, a number of major stage productions are performed each year, and auditions are open to all who wish to participate. Most students, however, will not pursue professional careers in Theatre. All will, however, be professional audience members during their lives. The Drama-Theatre Arts group works to help all students develop the skills necessary not only to perform, but also to appreciate the efforts of those who devote their lives to this art form.

North Salem High School offers with our Special Education Program a variety of specialized programs to assure that students are in their most beneficial placement. Listed below is a description of each of those programs.

EMOTIONAL GROWTH CENTER (EGC)A major goal in the EGC is teaching students who may or may not have emotional problems about the verbal as well as nonverbal behaviors involved in social interactions. We teach interpersonal skills such as making “small talk” in social settings, or the importance of good eye contact during a conversation. In addition, they learn to “read” many subtle cues contained in social interactions. The class helps students learn to interpret these and other social signals, so that they can determine how to act appropriately. The students learn about the society in which they live. Information is shared about culture sensitivity, current events, social norms, acceptable behaviors and other topics such as future careers, life goals, college and universities as well as basic financial understanding.

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER (ERC)The ERC program provides functional academics to students with a variety of disabilities. Students are typically between 3rd-5th grade academic levels with some students at the higher levels taking classes in mainstream or LRC. None of the students are fully self-contained (all day) and minimal supervision is provided during non- academic time. ERC provides instruction in reading, written language, oral communication, math (4th grade and below), science and social skills. Students take electives in the general education setting and try to earn as many credits as students in mainstream classes. Most students are on an extended diploma option. Instructional assistants will go to academic classes with a few students or electives if there are more than 5 ERC students in the class. The ERC is an academic based program offering more support than the LRC and is not geared for managing non-academic behaviors.

LIFE SKILLS CENTER The Life Skills Center is a classroom for students whose variety of challenges requires a more structured environment providing a smaller student-to-staff ratio and a higher degree of behavioral support. Students are placed in this program by the district and participate in varying degrees of Life Skills Center activities and those offered in general education settings. The Life Skills Center encourages social/emotional growth, and provides academic and behavioral support within the context of functional life skill instruction.

World LanguagesIn the 21st Century, success will come to those with the greatest understanding of their world. North Salem High School’s World Language Department offers three languages to give young Vikings the edge. French, Japanese, and Spanish studies teach non-native speakers to communicate by speaking, writing, and reading in the target languages and expose students to cultures from many parts of the world.

Our Heritage and AP Spanish courses give students that speak Spanish (including Dual Language students) the opportunity to develop advanced academic proficiency and literacy skills in Spanish while earning language credit. These classes also offer opportunities for students to earn college credit and the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy through examination.

Note: World Language credits are not required for graduation, but at least two years of world language with a minimum grade of C each semester is required for entrance to a 4-year university.

The process begins with the resident, or assigned school. Parent or guardian obtains an In-District Transfer request form from either their resident school or the Office of Elementary/Secondary Education. Forms are not available online or at other locations. The completed form is returned to the resident school.

For middle and high school students, if a transfer is desired within a school year, the transfer request form must be submitted between November 1 and November 30.

If the transfer is desired for the following school year, the request form must be submitted between March 1 and March 31.

The principals of both the resident school and the requested school separately review and approve or deny the request. If the request is approved by both principals, parents are mailed a copy of the approved form notifying them of the decision. The response time on transfer requests can vary but generally takes about one week.

If parents disagree with a decision on a transfer request, there is an appeal process. A letter of appeal must be written to the appropriate director of high school education. Be sure to include a copy of the In-District Transfer request and explain the reason you disagree with the decision. Please add any additional information you feel the director would need to make a decision. The director will respond in a letter detailing their decision. The director’s decision is final, and no further appeals can be submitted.

Please note: Bus transportation is not provided for students who attend school on an In-District Transfer.

For more information or questions about the In-District Transfer process, please contact the Office of Secondary Education at 503-399-2636.
