A Rich Heritage and a Bright FutureThousands of years ago, Calusa

Indians canoed Southwest Florida’s myriad waterways, establishing communities and enjoying shellfish and seafood. Their “middens” —raised mounds or refuse heaps of discarded shells—can still be seen today.

Ponce de Leon and other Spanish explorers arrived in the New World in the 1500s, seeking the Fountain of Youth, and the Calusas’ way of life changed forever. By the mid-18th century, through war, disease and dissemination, they were gone.

During the ensuing years, a new republic was formed, a civil war was fought, and the fledgling nation expanded westward. In the 1870s, government surveyors pitched camp here near a medicinal spring, which local Indians believed had healing powers. After the crew departed, the site was named Survey, and the stream was called Surveyor’s Creek.

By 1887, the young community had a thatch-roofed public school; a post office followed in 1901. Fishing, farming and citrus became mainstays of the small local economy.

The 20th Century In 1912, 70 students from

20 families were enrolled in the public school. Mr. Ragsdale, a land developer, bought 2,400 acres around Survey, laid out a small town with streets and avenues, and renamed it Bonita (“beautiful”) Springs. Surveyor’s Creek was renamed the Imperial River. The first road linking Bonita to Fort Myers was completed in 1917, and five years later, the railroad helped connect the two towns.

During the 1920s, Bonita was booming. It had its own jail, school and community center. Still, most of the homes were circled by fences—to keep out the cows.

Growth exploded in 1928, the year the Tamiami (Tampa-to-Miami) Trail was completed. As word of Bonita Springs’ natural charm and gentle climate spread north, newcomers and

visitors began to arrive. Among them were automobile magnate Henry Ford and his friends, inventor Thomas Edison and industrialist Harvey Firestone.

By 1930, Bonita was accessible by rail and car and continued to grow. When the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track opened for pari-mutuel betting in 1957, the town took another growth leap, though it was still an unincorporated portion of Lee County. In late 1999, Bonita Springs became a city, with exciting, new forward-thinking plans.

Looking AheadThe City’s Master Plan,

adopted in 2004, calls for Bonita’s historic downtown district to undergo a gradual, reinvigorating transformation. Tucked along Old U.S. 41 and bordered by the scenic Imperial River, the area is home to Riverside Park, a community gathering spot, and numerous small businesses. Bonita’s focused plan for growth and commerce protects this intimate, small-town appeal.

Strict development standards also preserve the area’s natural resources. Bonita’s island-studded coastline, warmed by the

gentle waters of the Gulf of Mexico, is blessed with miles of stringently protected beaches. Beyond, shady glades and forests, rivers and streams, freshwater wetlands and scrub up-lands dotted with saw palmettos are home to an amazing variety of wildlife.

Wherever you wander in Bonita Springs, you’re sure to meet our “natives”: wading birds such as egrets, ibis and herons; gentle manatees and acrobatic dolphins; gopher tortoises, alligators and sea turtles; small black bears and deer; bobcats and red foxes; armadillos and opossums; and, if you’re really lucky,

an elusive Florida Panther. Bonita has been their home for centuries, and the City’s proactive stewardship promises them a secure future.

Bonita Springs, once a simple fishing village and home to citrus farmers, incorporated as a city in 1999.t

The fine art photography of Alan S. Maltz graces our cover, brilliantly capturing the beauty and mystique that surrounds Bonita Springs and Southwest Florida. Mr. Maltz’s work can be found throughout the world in private, public and corporate collec-tions such as Bank of America Tower at International Place in Miami; Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta; The Ritz-Carlton in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Canson in Caen, France. Sixty of Maltz’s fine art images hang as a permanent exhibition at the Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers. These commissioned, limited-edition pieces hang in large format and capture the allure of Lee County and celebrate the magic of everyday life in the natural world. Maltz’s acclaimed books have received numerous honors and recognition. His latest, “Florida … Beyond the Blue Horizon,” was selected as the Official Coffee Table Book of Super Bowl XLI. His next collection, “Visions of Beauty: The Beaches Of Fort Myers & Sanibel,” will be released this fall. Maltz has been designated the "Official Fine Art Photographer for the State of Florida" and "The Official Wildlife Photographer of Florida." His gallery and studio is located in Old Town Key West and features his cutting-edge fine art, innovative framing designs and published works. Alan and his family enjoy the tranquility of nature from their home in the lower Florida Keys.

Friendly residents and community spirit are among Bonita’s greatest assets. Busy fami-lies, young professionals and active retirees

live, work and play side by side, nurturing and enjoying the many community resources available to every age, interest and need.

Like its Southwest Florida neighbors, Bonita Springs has experienced major growth during the last decade, but its small-town charm and gra-ciousness remain. Thanks to the city’s far-sighted residents, its rich history and unique downtown amenities are being preserved and enhanced. What has changed most is the roster of remark-able resources now available within Bonita’s boundaries and just minutes away.

Cosmopolitan AmenitiesTwo major performing arts centers—one in

Fort Myers, the other in Naples—offer world-class entertainment, from Broadway to ballet. The Art League of Bonita Springs’ comprehensive cam-pus, the ALBS Center for the Arts, has impressive galleries and a full roster of courses. Recreational and leisure activities for all ages are available at the state-of-the-art YMCA and the Bonita Springs Recreation Center. A variety of museums dot the Southwest Florida map, as do nature preserves, parks and sanctuaries.

Shopping and dining have achieved world-class status as well, adding another layer to Bo-nita’s reach tapestry of pleasures.

Education & HealthcareThe best in higher education is right at Bonita’s

back door: Florida Gulf Coast University. Addi-tional colleges and universities, many with pro-grams focused on working adults, dot the South-west Florida map. Throughout the Lee County School District, specialty schools, preschools and vo-tech and continuing education venues abound.

The Bonita Springs Public Library, part of the comprehensive Lee County Library System, holds thousands of volumes and offers a full schedule of informative and entertaining programs for chil-dren and adults throughout the year.

The medical community in and around Bonita Springs boasts a sophisticated network of services that includes urgent-care and walk-in clinics; full-service hospitals with birthing rooms, open-heart surgery and geriatric specialties; plus everything in between. Several assisted living/retirement communities are also located here.

Neighborhoods & Real Estate

House hunters have their choice of an extraor-dinary array of neighborhoods, price points and amenities in the Bonita Springs area: mature neighborhoods with hometown charm, spectacu-lar golf communities, or waterfront cottages and grand estates. Waterfront living extends beyond the beach, also encompassing homes and con-dominiums that overlook the Imperial river and scenic finger canals. No matter where you live in Bonita, though, you’re only minutes from the Gulf.

Golf, a 12-month pleasure in our gentle climate, is the focal point of many communities. Several boast championship courses, elegant clubhouses and an impressive array of club amenities.

Clusters of quaint little neighborhoods also nestle within Bonita and include charming houses with Old Florida features, as well as a palette of new homes.

Come explore our gracious community, where the daily sunshine is complemented by the warmth of our residents and wealth of our exceptional resources. You’ll discover that Bonita Springs is, truly, where you want to be!

An extraordinary quality of life and a welcoming attitude combine to make

Bonita Springs one of the nation’s most desirable business locations. Bonita has achieved renown as a seaside sanctuary and vacation-er’s dream—but it is also one of the top-ranked areas in the nation for new business start-ups and relocations. Several national firms in life sciences, technology and research are headquartered here.

Large corporations flourish, of course, but smaller entrepre-neurs thrive as well: more than 85 percent of the Chamber’s mem-ber businesses have 20 or fewer employees.

Businesses are choosing Bonita for a number of reasons: strategic location; proactive community and business development plans; a well-educated workforce; a growing state university (FGCU) and new Catholic university (Ave Maria) just minutes away—not to mention year-round sunshine coupled with superb amenities. Skilled and unskilled labor is also abundant. Steady, managed growth will put Lee County’s population at more than 650,000 by the year 2015. Working-age people (18 to 64) make up 56 per-cent of the population.

Location & InfrastructureThe City of Bonita Springs is

strategically located between two metropolitan statistical areas—Naples and Fort Myers—and

lies equidistant from Tampa to the north and Miami to the east. Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), just 20 minutes from the center of Bonita Springs, has regularly scheduled interna-tional flights and holds Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) status.

Two general aviation airports also serve the area: Naples Mu-nicipal Airport to the south, and Fort Myers Airways/Page Field to the north.

Interstate 75 stretches from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula all the way south to Bonita Springs. Just beyond Exit 116/Bonita Beach Road, I-75 swings east, connect-ing Bonita Springs to Miami and Fort Lauderdale as well as I-95, the country’s major north/south link to the Northeast.

Seminole Gulf Railway, with a Bonita Springs station, hauls freight through to Arcadia, Florida, where it links with other rail services. Major moving and trucking firms serve the area, and deep-water ports are easily acces-sible. The Okeechobee Waterway provides a navigation route from the Gulf of Mexico via the Caloo-sahatchee River to Florida’s east coast and the Atlantic Ocean.

Lee County keeps pace with plenty of hi-tech, innovative in-frastructure, as well. Its advanced telecommunications options in-clude SONET ring service with a survivable fiber optic system that prevents phone service interrup-tions. EMBARQ is the local phone

service provider, with residential rates below the national average.

Proactive Business Climate

Our burgeoning business environment gets a boost from several key players. One is the Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, which has earned a 5-Star Accreditation—the high-est possible rating—by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is driven by members and volunteers who participate in work groups, committees and business and community efforts. Additional information on busi-ness information and assistance resources can be found on pages 38-40.

Florida statutes are kind to business and industry. The state imposes no personal income tax, no corporate income tax on subchapter S-corporations and limited partnerships, no state-level property tax, and no inventory tax, among other incentives. The Lee County airports’ FTZ status shelters businesses with international ties from additional taxes on goods shipped and received.

Little wonder that so many companies and entrepreneurs choose Bonita Springs as their new home town—here, economic opportunity flourishes, coupled with a dedicated commitment to quality of life. Bonita is where business wants to be.

The Liles Hotel (top), at Riverside Park, is home to the Bonita Springs Historical Society. The park's bandshell hosts concerts.

a revitalized DOWNTOWN

A few years ago, the City of Bonita Springs debuted a master plan for the transformation of downtown Bonita. They envisioned pedestrian-friendly, landscaped walk-ways with access to offices, specialty shops and restau-rants—a thriving business location and gathering place reminiscent of Home-town America, where friends greet neighbors, visitors are welcome, and everyone comes together to enjoy special events and leisure activities.

Vibrant Metamorphosis Preserves the Past

Today, Bonita’s historic downtown—the area nestled between Bonita Beach Road and Terry Street along “Old U.S.

41”—is evolving in alignment with the City’s master plan.

Downtown’s Riverside Park is a prime example, a scenic venue for City and special events that

includes a newly built state-of-the-art bandshell. Future ameni-ties may include a boat launch and floating dock, plus paved hiking and biking trails.

The park, by downtown Bo-nita’s huge banyan tree (itself a historic landmark), is the site of family-friendly activities, such as the “Movies in the Park” series

(January through April) sponsored by the City, the Chamber and the Bonita Springs-Estero Associa-tion of Realtors, Inc.

The historic Liles Hotel and six fishing cottages—important elements of Bonita’s riverfront heritage—have been renovated and recently opened to the public. The refurbished hotel serves as a heritage museum with historically themed exhibitions that celebrate

Bonita’s colorful past. Local artists use the cottages as galleries and studios, holding “open house” hours during the winter season (see the Calendar of Events, pages 18-19).
