Food Storage GuideThere is a correct way to package and store refrigerated or frozen food. To keep food fresher, longer, take the time to study these recommended steps.

Storing fresh foodWrap or store food in the refrigerator in air-tight and moisture-proof material. Thisprevents food odor and taste transferthroughout the refrigerator. For datedproducts, check code date to ensurefreshness.

Leafy vegetablesRemove store wrapping and trim or tear offbruised and discolored areas. Wash in coldwater and drain. Place in plastic bag orplastic container and store in crisper.

Vegetables with skins(carrots, peppers)Store in crisper, plastic bags or plasticcontainer.

FruitWash, let dry and store in refrigerator inplastic bags or crisper. Do not wash or hullberries until they are ready to use. Sort andkeep berries in their original container in acrisper, or store in a loosely closed paperbag on a refrigerator shelf.

EggsStore without washing in the original cartonon interior shelf.

MilkWipe milk cartons. For best storage, placemilk on interior shelf.

Butter or margarineKeep opened butter in covered dish orclosed compartment. When storing an extrasupply, wrap in freezer packaging andfreeze.

CheeseStore in the original wrapping until you areready to use it. Once opened, rewrap tightlyin plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

LeftoversCover leftovers with plastic wrap or alumi-num foil. Plastic containers with tight lids canalso be used.

MeatStore most meat in original wrapping as longas it is airtight and moisture-proof. Rewrap ifnecessary. See the following chart forstorage times.

    ISteaks and roasts 3 to 5 I

    Cured meats

    Bacon

Storing frozen foodThe freezer section is designed for storageof commercially frozen food and for freezingfood at home.NOTE: For further information about prepar-ing food for freezing or food storage times, check a freezer guide or reliable c ookbook.

PackagingThe secret of successful freezing is in thepackaging. The way you close and seal the

package must not allow air or moisture in orout. Packaging done in any other way couldcause food odor and taste transfer through-out the refrigerator and drying of frozenfood.

Packaging recommended for use:l Rigid plastic containers with tight-fitting lidsl Straight-sided canning/freezing jarsl Heavy-duty aluminum foill Plastic-coated paperl Non-permeable plastic wraps (made from

    a Saran film)

Follow package or container instructions forproper freezing methods.

Do not use:l Bread wrappersl Non-polyethylene plastic containersl Containers without tight lidsl Waxed paperl Waxed-coated freezer wrapl Thin, semi-permeable wrap

The use of these wrappings could causefood odor, taste transfer and drying of frozenfood.

FreezingDo not expect your freezer to quick-freezeany large quantity of food. Put no moreunfrozen food into the freezer than willfreeze within 24 hours (no more than 32 to48 grams of food per liter [2 to 3 Ibs. percubic foot] of freezer space). Leave enoughspace for air to circulate around packages .Be careful to leave enough room at the frontso the door can close tightly.

Storage times will vary according to thequality of the food, the type of packaging orwrap used (airtight and moisture-proof) andthe storage temperature, which should be-17.8% (0F).
