Whistler Cup Project Report – April 2012

On April 1st 2012, the members of the Australian Children’s plus a few invitees came together in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada to complete in the 20th annual Whistler Cup (one of 12 FIS Children’s races on the calendar for 2012-13). All together there were 18 athletes attending and 1 athlete (Annie Hough) who could not make the journey due to injury the previous week (check out page 3 for a complete list of attending athletes & staff)

Plan A – train Monday – Tuesday, rest Wednesday, train Thursday, then race Friday to Sunday.

Objectives for our training time in Whistler • Nurture team dynamic • Become familiar w. race pistes &

surrounds • Become familiar w. Whistler snow • High quality / high intensity training

Plan B Heavy snowfall (43cm overnight w. another 16cm’s through the day) changed the plans a little and the team an amazing opportunity to explore one of the best mountains in the world (definitely one of the best days of the season…super deep). Wednesday saw the clouds breaking and the snow stop and allowed the K2’s some train on the SG track, while the K1’s trained GS – everyone came together Wednesday afternoon to finish off with an SL session. Thursday was a day off for most (some were on individual plans based on sickness and injury earlier in the week), allowing them to catch up on homework and prepare for the busy block of racing ahead.

9 days in Whistler…

Sunday – arrive in Whistler Monday – train GS / GS drills Tuesday – powder skiing…deep! Wednesday – SG / SL (GS / SL K1’s) Thursday – rest for most / controlled SG freeski for Nick and Lexxy - SL training for Georgia W Friday – K1 Kombi race / K2 SG Saturday – women’s GS / men’s SL Sunday – women’s SL / men’s GS Monday – travel

Whistler Cup Project Report – April 2012

Friday morning started with an amazing sunrise as we ascended into the alpine on the gondola, giving some of the best views Whistler has to offer. By time the K2 girls were on course for the SG, the light on the track was perfect, the snow was rock solid…about as good as it gets. Solid skiing from the girls. When the K2 men descended down the track, it was still in amazing condition, no grooves or ruts to speak of. Oliver Thompson came across the finish line in a time of 1’00.70, which would end up being the fasted time of the day. This historic win marked Australia’s first Gold medal at the Whistler Cup, and created an enormous feeling of pride in the entire team. Zac Kelly was not far behind with a time of 1’02.08, landing him in 6th. The race series was off to a great start.

The K1’s were racing on the upper portion of the Dave Murray Downhill (the Olympic DH & SG run). ‘The Dave’ saw softer snow conditions, but thanks to amazing help from the Weasel Works (a dedicated (& somewhat notorious) volunteer group based out of Whistler), the race ran smooth and gave all athletes a fair race. Solid skiing from the K1’s – this was the first international race for all five of them…fair to say that there were some nervousness amongst the group…solid skiing overall gave them a confidence boost to start attacking day 2.

Day 1 – K1 Kombi & K2 Super G The annual parade was a huge hit, with the Canadian team making their entrance on a 1950’s circa fire truck with Canadian Alpine team members Robbie Dixon, Manny Osbourne-Paradis, Mike Janyk and Erin Mielynski. Being the 20th anniversary, the ROC brought in a special guest Tina Maze (Slovenian World Cupper – 2nd in the overall standings this year, - she won all three races in her 2nd year K2 in Whistler). She was inspirational to all, and encouraged everyone to keep fighting to be the best.

Whistler Cup Project Report – April 2012

Day 2 brought more sunshine, and great racing conditions again, with the women racing GS & the men SL. Women’s GS Maddi Hoffman finished ripped a clean run to secure 7th place, with Lucy Neill tying for 12th – very solid from both girls (watch this space…loads of talent w. both) The fastest K2 AUS girl was Lily Newton-Brown coming in 16th, with some good moments Phoebe (ripping in sections), Zoe, Sarah, Lexxy and Louisa. NB: Eliza Honan sat out the GS to prepare for Sunday’s SL, as part of her return to play coming back from an injury. Men’s SL Ned, Alex and Billy skied solid in the 1st run, but a few costly mistakes took their toll. 2nd run proved to consistent for all 3 lads…particularly for Ned who ripped in pretty tough track conditions. Pretty tough day in the office for the boys, all but Zac came out in the first run. This didn’t phase Zac, who skied into a rock solid 6th for the second time in 2 days…very good skiing.

Day 2 – Women’s GS & Men’s SL

Inspection – women’s GS

Page 12: WHISTLER CUP - SportsTG · 2012-04-12 · Whistler Cup Project Report – April 2012 •23 days on snow •3 race days •20 training days •16 SL sessions (incl. 3x night sessions)

Whistler Cup Project Report – April 2012

The sun was out again for day 3 (not super common for Whistler at the best of times…we were loving it). Women’s SL Maddi Hoffman was super consistent in both runs, wrapping up the day in 5th (we think that Maddi had another gear, but this was solid, particularly for a 1st year). More good skiing from Lucy Neill winding up 25th. The K2 women were ready to charge, and perhaps not quite as consistent as the K1’s as a team. Pheobe Wood went out in run 1 (slaying it until she came out), great sections from Lexxy, consistent skiing from Lexxy, stable skiing from Georgia and Zoe. Eliza DSQ – 1, solid skiing, but a straddle took her out play for run 2. Louisa was solid 1st run, although was unable to participate in the 2nd run. more consistent skiing from Lily ending the day in 15th, Sarah Dennis threw down on run 2 (10th fastest run).

Day 3 – Women’s SL & Men’s GS

Men’s GS Perfect track conditions and sunlight were the order of the day for K1’s. Solid from the boys w. Ned, Billy and Alex skiing clean runs. Good skiing from the lads – although lacking risk, good skiing certainly worthy of a pat on the back for a job well done. Good opening leg for the K2 men with all but Zac (skied out mid course run 1) and Philip (the victim of a bit of a cranky left footer 3 gates from the finish). Harrison and Oli skied into the top 30 and were prepared to take advantage of good track conditions for 2nd run. Nick had a few misadventures run 1 meaning that he would start a little further back. Oli was sitting .84 out in 3rd after run 1, but skied a little (a lot) too conservatively in run 2 getting bumped back to 7th – Harrison Coull rock solid in the 2nd leg wrapping up in the 23rd – more consistent skiing from Nick for run 2 moved him up a few spots- overall not quite the day that we had hoped for in GS, but not so bad.
