Dear Parents and Friends of Whitby,

The Annual Report provides me with the opportunity to once again celebrate the many people who

make a difference in the life of our school and share a passion for Whitby through their donations

and support. Whitby is an inspirational school with ambitious plans and innovative programs. We are

thankful for the generosity of our entire school community, both new and returning families, whose

impressive giving has strengthened our school.

The past two years have been marked by tremendous growth and development not just in our

programs and campus but also in our fundraising. During the 2013-2014 school year, the Whitby

community raised significant funds for the school. This was achieved thanks to our dedicated

parents, volunteers, trustees, faculty and staff and friends who have contributed in unprecedented

ways. Through the Whitby Fund’s Strength in Numbers annual campaign, Reimagining Ready: The

Campaign for Whitby, and our amazingly successful Kentucky Derby Benefit, we received over $3

million. This impressive figure is the largest ever raised in one school year at Whitby.

As we continue to dream and work to make this dream a reality, we are thankful for and blessed by

your continuing support. Please take a moment to reflect upon the many names of volunteers and

donors listed on these pages, and share the pride and confidence I have in this vibrant, growing and

evolving community of learners. It is truly amazing to be part of this journey and to see all that we

provide for each and every child in our care. Not only do we have “Strength in Numbers” but 2014-

2015 bodes very well as Whitby really is “On the Move”.

Sincerely,

Bryan Nixon

Whitby inspires a passion for learning and

empowers each child to take responsibility

as an open-minded, principled citizen in a

global community.

Whitby will be the school of choice offering a

compelling educational continuum, recognized

for excellence and for embracing innovation.

Dear Whitby School Friends,

Whitby School is a busy, bustling, happy and evolving place. At this, the end of my third year as

Chair of the Board of Trustees, it’s valuable and rewarding to spend some time reflecting upon

some of what we have experienced and accomplished this year as a community.

With another strong year at Whitby under Bryan Nixon’s leadership, we can proudly celebrate:

• our outstanding faculty and staff for their daily devotion and dedication to our children

and for leading us through the most successful IB Primary and Middle Years Program

Evaluations ever;

• our newest graduates and secondary school placement team for attaining entrance into the

region’s top boarding and day schools;

• investing over $5 million in our facilities leading to the opening of our four new classrooms

including our state-of-the-art science lab and design technology room; and

• the many achievements of our after-school programs, including an overflowing treasure trove

of chess tournament trophies, and being the only school in the state to have all four teammates

qualify for the MATHCOUNTS State Championships.

And the list goes on. None of this would have been possible without dedicated parents, volunteers,

faculty and staff, trustees, grandparents and alumni who have contributed to Strength in Numbers,

(our Whitby Fund), Reimagining Ready (our capital campaign) and our smashing 2014 Spring Benefit

Kentucky Derby Party. Thank you all!

It’s a privilege to serve Whitby and to collaborate with parents, faculty and staff and Bryan to

ensure that we continue to grow and flourish as a community of learners and givers. I am keenly

appreciative of your awareness that independent schools cannot sustain themselves or limit tuition

increases without annual charitable support. Your giving of time, talent and treasure is immeasurable

and critical to Whitby’s continued successful trajectory.

With gratitude,

Patricia Franklin

Whitby School’s musical theatre program grew by leaps and bounds in 2013-2014.

Credit for this growth goes to Theatre Teacher and Director Allyn Rathus, who adds

Arts Curriculum Coordinator to her title in 2014-2015. What made musical theatre so

exciting this year? We spoke to Allyn to get her insights.

Q: How do you feel you were able to improve upon Whitby’s theatre program?

A: I was welcomed to restructure the program and “do it my way”. I was also challenged to

incorporate the IB curriculum into my program, with the freedom and support for the types

of shows I wanted to do.

Q: What helped you incorporate curriculum?

A: I tried to be innovative with my work; I used contemporary music with Shakespeare

and tried to modernize themes by connecting them to the human condition. We stretched

Whitby’s trans-disciplinary model, reaching across disciplines to incorporate the concepts

the students are studying in English literature, humanities, music and art.

Q: What other challenges did you face?

A: I had to use a small and confined space to its absolute fullest. I did this with the help

of our fabulous facilities department by building out the stage and building levels with

scaffolding. I placed students everywhere -- even in the audience -- which helped them

discover what it was like to be in role and interact with the audience at the same time.

Q: How were you able to get large numbers of students involved in your

productions?

A: I asked them what THEY wanted. A musical had not been done for many years, so they

were excited about that. I also tried to meet the students where they were by creating

After the show, Teacher/Director Allyn

Rathus speaks to the audience about the

production of Romeo and Juliet.

exciting male and female roles, finding

opportunities to cast females in male

roles and vice versa. When students

came to me with their ideas, I tried my

best to incorporate them.

Q: How did extra funding provided

through the Whitby Fund and

Spring Benefit help grow the program?

A: We had to rent a sound board and lighting board for our first

production, but after that, the need was apparent, and charitable

contributions made it possible for us to purchase a brand new soundboard

and 20+ wireless microphones.

Q: Can you crystallize any rewarding moments of your first year

at Whitby?

A: Well, as a teacher you watch students struggle with learning their lines,

staying in character and calming their nerves while taking risks. So you

don’t always get the chance to tell them how much they are doing RIGHT.

At the end of Romeo and Juliet, the students presented me with a long,

scroll-like, artistic card with messages they had written on it. Through their

messages, I was able to discover that they were doing so much right and

feeling it. This was really rewarding!

2013-2014 was another

exciting year at Whitby School characterized

by growth and progress. Our ambitious

goals helped us to build on Whitby’s unique

learning environment as we completed the

final stages of our 2011-2014 Strategic Plan

and look forward to our new one.

Academic excellence

Program evaluation

• We continue to enjoy American Montessori Society (AMS) accreditation following our reaccreditation last school year.

• We completed our International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP) Evaluation with a very successful IBPYP Evaluation Report that will guide our program development for the next 5 years from Stepping Stones to Grade 4.

• We completed our IB Middle Years Program (IBMYP) Evaluation with a very successful IBMYP Evaluation Report that will guide our program development for the next 5 years from Grade 5 to Grade 8.

• We carefully analyzed our external standardized assessment data gained from the ERB (Grades 2 through 8) and the International Schools Assessment (Grades 3 and 5) to create action plans for 2014-2015. We continually share this data with our community as we strive for increased accountability throughout all aspects of school operation.

Curriculum Development

• Our Mathematics program performed very strongly both in our internal assessments and the ERB and the International Schools Assessment.

• Our SAIL program hosted visits from other local independent schools. We now serve as a model of excellence for the process we have implemented and for the support we provide.

• Our Arts program demonstrated significant growth in our theatre productions, music concerts and the All School Art Show.

Administration

Campus Development

• We built and started enjoying our four-classroom addition featuring a Middle Elementary (ME) classroom, an Upper School Spanish classroom, a Design Technology lab and a Science lab. The classroom addition has had an enormous impact on the program we deliver, not just in those four classrooms, but also across the curriculum.

Page 12: Whitby School Annual Report

12

Secondary School Placement

• We continued to successfully implement our Secondary School Placement Program for Grade 7 and 8 students.

• Our Grade 8 students accumulated 36 acceptances from 7 independent day schools (including Avenues, Greens Farms Academy, Hackley, St. Luke’s, Harvey School and King Low Heywood Thomas) and 19 boarding schools (including Berkshire School, Brooks School, Cheshire Academy, Choate Rosemary Hall, Cushing Academy, Loomis Chaffee School, Millbrook School, Miss Porter’s School, Rugby School, Salisbury School, Suffield Academy, Trinity Pawling School and Westover School).

• All Grade 8 students enrolled in their top school of choice.

Supporting the growth and Development of our Faculty and Staff

• We implemented a new faculty and staff professional growth process that is designed to support our faculty and staff as they continue their professional learning and continue to provide excellence in classroom practice and in programs that support our curriculum and school development.

Communication and Community

Cocurricular Program

• Our cocurricular program continued extensive development both through the range of activities offered in WECCP (for Primary 2 through Grade 4) and through the 3pm-4pm Upper School Electives and Athletics Programs. WECCP increased course options and enjoyed a 25% greater participation than the 2012-2013 school year. The School’s Athletics program enjoyed increased performance standards, more winning seasons and our inaugural Athletics Awards Evening. We also continued the development of an Athletics program for Grade 3 and 4 students.

Community Service

• Our Community Service Program succeeded this year with all Grade 7 and 8 students completing 15 hours of service or more with up to 12 partner organizations, such as Special Olympics, the Boys and Girls Club, etc. Grade 5 and 6 students participated in the Community Service Program through campus beautification and a buddy program with our Primary students. The Grade 7 and 8 school trip further extended the program as our students provided service for an orphanage and a batey in the Dominican Republic.

Strategic Plan

Thanks to the work of our Strategic Plan Steering Committee, we are ready to launch our new three-year Strategic Plan in 2014. The committee included:

• Board members Timothy Hall, Deborah Linnett, Susan Geraci, and Lisa Merzon;

• parent representatives Tanya Nargolwalla and Heather Cotter;

• pedagogical representatives Jonathan Chein and Alyssa Smith;

• administrative representative Tim Schwartz;

• Head of School Bryan Nixon

Whitby School celebrates the Whitby School Alumni Lecture Series established by

Trustee Kathleen Hennessy, ’70 and her family through The Hennessy Foundation.

Over the last several years we have been fortunate to have highly esteemed speakers such

as Tony Wagner, EdD, author of The Global Achievement Gap, Dr. Michael Thompson,

educator and author of Best Friends, Worst Enemies and The Pressured Child. In 2014,

Alfie Kohn spoke on spoke on The Myth of the Spoiled Child and urged parents to revisit

fears and fallacies about raising children. In October 2014, the Whitby School Alumni

Speaker Series featured Dr. Howard Gardner discussing his new book with Katie Davis

entitled The App Generation. Engaging Dr. Gardner, a highly sought-after speaker who

is the director of Project Zero at Harvard University, was a huge coup for Whitby.

We are deeply grateful to Kathleen for her generosity

which, through her family’s foundation, provides this

important yearly community gift. A longtime trustee,

Kathleen currently is board vice chair and chair of our

building and grounds committee. She has led Whitby

in the development of the master plan and the execution

of phase one.

As a child, Kathleen attended Whitby for 12 years along

with her five brothers. Her son, Bradley, also attended

Whitby School.

take a Look at Where Our graduates are headed this Fall

During the graduation ceremony, graduates shared

reflections on their Whitby experiences:

“This school has gone so far beyond just teaching me what I need to learn. It taught me to love learning and helped me to push myself further than I ever thought I could go. It slowly coaxed me out of my comfort zone and got me to stretch myself and broaden my horizons.”

“After really thinking about what ‘Whitby Ready’ meant to me, I can say that I exemplify what this truly means: I know who I am, I am proud of who I am, and I am ready to contribute…I am Whitby Ready.”

“Whitby has taught me how to think, not so much what to think.”

“At Whitby we don’t just care for one another, we love each other.”

Whitby wishes our graduates all the best in high school and ask that they stay involved with their Whitby community! We will miss you all and are looking forward to keeping up with all of your future accomplishments!

W e celebrate the 23-year tenure of Whitby Primary Teacher Leigh Lionetti, who

retired in June of 2014. Leigh came to Whitby as a parent and an extremely active

volunteer. She was a parent guide and a class mom, and each year she was very involved

with Whitby’s signature event, Mayfair.

Leigh’s two children, Liza (now Ophelia Austin-Small) and Frank, both attended Whitby as

young students. Ophelia is a psychologist, and Frank is a recently married graphic designer.

Leigh’s early days as a Whitby faculty member began in the classroom with Nurjhan Dayan

and Karen Atkins. She then became head teacher during the headship of Barbara Gordon.

Some of Leigh’s most special memories of Whitby include Barbara Brent’s leadership and

benefitting from wonderful language workshops Barbara brought to Whitby. Also, Leigh

was fortunate to take a life-expanding trip to Italy to attend a Montessori Conference in

2007 along with Malina Marshall, Padma Iyer and Maureen Scordato.

Leigh says by far the most valuable part of being at Whitby was the joy she received from

both the children and teachers. She appreciates all the learning she was able to achieve,

both hands-on and through incredible educational opportunities provided by colleagues

and outside educators.

Leigh is looking forward to substituting at Whitby. She enjoys seeing her former students,

many of whom are now out of college, stop by to say hello.

With gratitude, we wish Leigh a very happy and fulfilling retirement!

Retirement, Leigh Lionetti!

Outright gifts

• Cash or Checks - Please make checks payable to Whitby School.

• Online Giving – Whitby accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express. To make an online contribution, please go to www.whitbyschool.org/givenow

• Matching Gifts – Many companies will match contributions made by an employee (or by an employee’s spouse) to the Whitby School. Simply secure a matching gift form from your employer and submit it to the Office of Institutional Advancement.

• Gifts of Securities – Gifts of appreciated securities are an excellent way to make a gift. Donors receive a deduction for the entire amount of the stock transferred and avoid taxes on capital gains. Please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement for instructions on transferring securities.

Planned gifts

Planned Gifts are gifts that come to Whitby in the future, or over a period of years, whereby you can take a partial tax deduction for the gift and then receive an income stream for a specified number of years. Estate planning guidelines change, so you

are advised to consult with your financial advisor when considering which options would benefit you the most. Planned Giving opportunities include the following:

• Bequests are assets transferred through your estate, such as a cash gift set out in your will. Other bequests include the proceeds from retirement plans, insurance policies or property.

• Charitable Gift Annuities are contractual agreements in which you irrevocably transfer funds or properties to Whitby. The contributed funds become assets of the school, and Whitby pays a fixed sum to you and/or another person for life.

• Charitable Remainder Trusts are a tax-exempt, irrevocable trust in which you grant property, investments, or money to Whitby. You, as the donor, continue to use the property or receive income from the investments or money for a specified period, at the end of which the remainder of the trust goes to Whitby.

• Charitable Lead Trusts are gift structures in which you as the donor remove specified assets from your estate (receiving immediate tax savings) and provide the school income from those assets for a period of years. At the end of the gift period, the assets may be returned to you or to a third party.

• Gifts of Life Insurance allow you to create a policy or donate a paid-up policy whose coverage you no longer need or desire.

We are grateful for your support and thank you in advance for giving to Whitby School. If you have questions or wish to discuss how best to support Whitby School, please contact Director of Institutional Advancement Lynne Brum at [email protected] or (203) 983-6632, or Director of Development Jennifer O’Neill at [email protected] or (203) 302-3958.

Support

From Whitby School’s beginning in 1958, our School has enjoyed strong philanthropic support from generations of parents, trustees, alumni, grandparents and friends. This support allows us to honor the vision of the founding families and create a school focused on the personal development of each child within a strong and thriving community.

Our children have benefitted from the generosity of past and present donors, and we all are asked to similarly support the School. Investing in Whitby ensures we continue to fulfill Whitby’s wonderful mission both now and for future generations of students and families.

We welcome you to engage with Whitby as your time, talents and resources permit. There are several opportunities to contribute and financially support Whitby throughout the year. Each is essential to strengthen the School. All contributions to Whitby are outright gifts and are tax-deductible. As you consider how you wish to support Whitby, please make note of these important giving opportunities.

giving OPPOrtunitieS

• The Whitby Fund is the yearly fundraising campaign supported by all members of the Whitby community (parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff and friends). Gifts to the Whitby Fund constitute the most important source of unrestricted funds available to the School outside of tuition. The Whitby Fund supports the operating budget and enhances every aspect of the Whitby experience. Our goal is to achieve 100% participation from our parents.

• The Capital Campaign is our multi-year strategic fundraising effort to raise significant support from the Whitby community for new and improved facilities to meet the long-term needs and to preserve Whitby’s legacy. The Capital Campaign provides funds above and beyond those secured through the Whitby Fund and the Spring Benefit. The current capital campaign supports the construction of four new classrooms including a science laboratory and a design technology classroom, as well as advancing the athletic program.

• The Annual Spring Benefit is a major fundraising event and an opportunity to celebrate and to come together as a community. The Parents Association organizes this memorable event attended by families, faculty and staff and friends of Whitby. Benefit proceeds have a major impact on Whitby’s ability to deliver an exceptional learning experience for all our students from Stepping Stones through Grade 8.

The Office of Institutional Advancement has made every effort to ensure

the accuracy and completeness of this report. If we have made an error or

omission, please accept our apologies and inform the Office of Institutional

Advancement so that we may correct our records.

Courageousand

Class of 2014

“ I realize we have so much but we want more, and they have nothing and don’t need ‘more’. Our ‘more’ isn’t the same.”

“ If I were to switch places with one of the boys here, what would he think of my life?”

“ These kids make the best of what they have. I can learn to do that as well. A hug can mean the world to these kids.”

“ Volunteering was a lot of fun. I saw that anyone can improve someone’s life with just a desire to do it.”

W hen I attempt to summarize the 2013-2014 school year for the Upper School and capture the

essence of our graduating Class of 2014, the amazing trip to the Dominican Republic with our

7th and 8th graders rises instantly to the top as a defining event that also describes a Whitby education.

Of the many tenets that connect us as a Whitby community, a core belief is that the world’s problems

and challenges can only begin to be addressed when we honor different perspectives and viewpoints,

and that those perspectives and viewpoints are the sound and rational result of developing in different

circumstances. While we continuously strive as teachers and parents for our children to develop the

attributes to support this outlook in the world, this maturity usually happens gradually and requires

intentional reflection to recognize.

For this reason, the trip to the Dominican Republic was so rewarding and inspiring as a teacher at

Whitby. In June, 49 students and teachers returned from 8 days in the Dominican Republic. As in past

trips, we learned about history, explored cultures that were new to us, engaged in adventure, and grew

as a supportive community. However, central to this year’s trip was a service component, which left a

huge impact on everyone. Listening to our 12-, 13-, and 14-year-olds reflect brought tears to my eyes

with regularity (see their quotesat left).

It’s difficult to characterize an entire group of individual students, but if I had to choose two words to

describe our middle schoolers, they would be courageous and supportive. Guided by their parents and all

of the adults at Whitby, they have grown into empowered advocates. While Whitby will feel their absence

next year, their receiving schools will certainly benefit from the arrival of individuals who are not just open

to the notion of understanding, but who require it in their quest to make the world a better place.

Many thanks to all -- family, teachers, students, guests, friends -- who have contributed to the growth

and development of our Class of 2014!

Best wishes,

Jonathan Chein, Head of Upper School
