In Dumbo, Dancers Develop Dynamics Link: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390443389604578024731280369650.html

By REBECCA BRATBURD

At this weekend's Dumbo Dance Festival, the one unifying quality among all 114 participating modern-dance companies was "their dedication to developing their own voice within dance and expanding on the vocabulary of movement," according to Young Soon Kim, founder of the festival as well as WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the festival was the diversity of the dancers and choreographers. Professional dance troupes came from around the globe, representing a range of physicalities and themes. They performed to classical and contemporary music from abstract ambient sounds to structured pop anthems.

Choreographer Heidi Latsky of Heidi Latsky Dance Company works with a diversity of dancers with different abilities (for example, dancer Jerron Herman, who performed in "Somewhere," has cerebral palsy). "In the U.S., especially New York, you don't see a lot of different body types or disabilities in modern dance," Ms. Latsky said. "In Europe, it's more prevalent. We're aiming to change that."

Italy's Enzo Celli, who choreographed and performed in a dance titled "Flour," said he prioritizes emotional messages over particular steps or movements. "I'm working for the souls [of the audience], not for individual people," he said. "It's more about confronting emotions than the steps or the acting."

Mr. Celli said he was inspired to write "Flour" after Alda Merini, one of his favorite poets, died following a lifelong struggle with mental illness. "This is something good to give back to her at the end of her life; it's a way of saying thank you." Choreographer Ted Thomas noted that all of the performances celebrate "the joy of movement," whether they're heavy with meaning or are simply dance for dance's sake." Overall, he said, he most enjoys the wide diversity of artistic vision at Dumbo Dance.

Ms. Kim said her mission is to provide beginning choreographers the opportunity to showcase their work. Essentially, her company offsets the cost of studio rental and other expenses, such as advertising, that come with showcasing dance performances.

"Even in New York, the capital of art, there are not many venues where young choreographers can present," she said. "It seems very limiting, so here is an opportunity for artists to perform. Plus, our audience is very enthusiastic."

Ms. Kim said she was expecting a quarter million people to visit Dumbo Dance Festival, which coincided with the Dumbo Arts Festival.

A version of this article appeared October 2, 2012, on page A26 in the U.S. edition of The Wall Street Journal, with the headline: In Dumbo, Dancers Develop Dynamics.

For the 14th consecutive year, WHITE WAVE will produce and present our annual DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL

(DDF): a four day marathon showcase of cutting-edge contemporary dance featuring both emerging and eminent

dancemakers. The 2014 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL (Sept. 25-28) held at WHITE WAVE John Ryan

Theater will feature over 75 companies with 350 performing artists. Aside from WHITE WAVE’s Opening Night

GALA fundraiser taking place on September 25th, all performances in our 3-day dance extravaganza will be

presen-ted free of charge to the public.

The 2014 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL will feature an extraordinarily diverse group of contemporary dance works,

both in style and spirit. Up to 7 companies are presented in every hour of programming, hailing from New York

City’s vibrant contemporary dance scene as well as from all across the United States & Mexico.

The 2014 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL runs concurrently with the DUMBO Arts Festival, which transforms our

distinctive waterfront neighborhood into the single largest forum for experimental art in the United States. The

grand scale of the 2014 DDF, the diverse artist participation, and vast interdisciplinary variety distin-guishes this

event from its peers. In fact, DUMBO Brooklyn has become the cultural magnet for startup, digital and creative

companies, such as Etsy, MakerBot and Steiner Studios, in the greater Downtown Brooklyn area. Just one train

stop from downtown Manhattan, the WHITE WAVE John Ryan Theater resides in this hotbed of artistic

collaborations and provides a vital showcase for the latest in cutting edge, contemporary dance.

Once again, the panel’s choice has produced a spectacular roster of performers this year, including: LoBrace

DanceWorks, Mazzini Dance Collective, L2DanceTheater, Monica Hogan Danceworks, The Movement Project,

WHITE WAVE originated the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL in 2001 as a response to the dance community’s need

for performance venues that would not only present, but also produce the work of rising choreographers at

little or no cost to the artist. We started as a local company in DUMBO (Brooklyn), now we pre-sent three

annual large scale festivals (DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL, WAVE RISING SERIES, CoolNY Dance Festival). To

date, WHITE WAVE has presented over 2,200 choreographers /dance companies and over 9,000 performers to a

total of more than 65,000 audience members!

WHITE WAVE’s festivals have garnered repeated attention from The New York Times, PBS Ch.13 “NYC-Arts”,

The Wall Street Journal, The Daily News, The Village Voice, Channel 7 “Eyewitness News,” and Dance

Magazine. As WHITE WAVE has grown, so has the buzz surrounding us, leading to rave reviews in both local and

international media citing the magnificence of our festivals and naming our John Ryan Theater “the hottest spot

in DUMBO.”

GALA Opening Night: September 25th at 7pm

The 2014 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL will kick off with WHITE WAVE’s Opening Night GALA Celebration on

Thursday, Sept. 25th at 7:00 pm. The evening will be hosted by a guest celebrity (TBA). We have selected two of

our most distinguished supporters to honor the great impact they have had in furthering our mission this year.

Their opening remarks will be followed by six stunning contemporary dance troupes: L2Dance Theater, Heather

Roffe, Clairobscur Dance Company, Nathan Madden, KDNY, Sue Samuel’s Jazz Roots Dance Com-pany and

WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company.Afterwards, the audience will enjoy a reception with a buffet

2008 DUMBO Dance Festival Various Choreographers The White Wave Studio at John Ryan Theater 22 Jay Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Review by Kristin Forte

Young Soon Kim’s dance company White Wave was the proud host of the 2008 DUMBO Dance Festival, offering their studio to showcase some of the best talent in contemporary dance from around the country and abroad.

The night featured several cutting-edge numbers, one being excerpt of newyou performed by Jon Guymon and Kristin Osler of the Johannes Wieland Dance Company. Osler pours water into a glass, and, as the music turns static and jerky, she goes into convulsions, shaking the glass and spilling water all over the stage. Guymon artfully wipes it up as the dance continues to unfold. Another such piece is The Pursuit of Balloons, performed by several members of the I-danse Company, an odd and interesting experience akin to a Twin Peaks-themed circus. Shopping carts,

balloons and goblets serve as props in this highly inventive and expressive number.

Some performances were not as accessible, however, such as Yannis Adoniou’s KUNST-STOFF’s presentation of UnState, which features a woman with long black hair covering her face, chanting and later screaming in an indiscernible language as she seems to bewitch a dancing couple. Although it is a bit unsettling and requires

audiences to have an extremely open mind and an appreciation for avant-garde theater, the lead woman is clearly committed to her role.

The White Wave Company closed the evening with excerpts from their new piece, SSOOT II: the jewel in the lotus, in which a talented male dancer performs flawless and graceful acrobatics on hanging pieces of fabric. There’s also an interesting use of props, including a

chair and column on which a couple centers their dance. A fog machine and the sound of rain create an ambiance as the excerpts are performed.

The White Wave dance company can be seen again from October 15 – November 2 as the host of the third annual Wave Rising Series, in which they will feature 20 dance companies from all over the world.

REVIEW: DUMBO DANCE 2010

10 Years of Fertility The 10th Anniversary Year of the Dumbo Dance Festival

By QUINN BATSON

Emily Oldak and Marla Phelan in a duet from Young Soon Kim's So Long for Now

Presenting 15 hour-long shows over 3 days, with 6 to 10 groups in each show, is a logistical accomplishment. Young Soon Kim has gotten better at it in each of the 10 years of her DUMBO Dance Festival; this year featured an outdoor finale concert at the Fulton Ferry Landing to celebrate those 10 years. Yes, there is still some chaos to negotiate as an audience member, admission is by strongly requested donation, and the theater is not going to be cool inside if the weather outside is warm. But this institution for choreographic germination is such fertile ground that one is bound to step into some proverbial __, both the fortuitous and the offal kinds, and the gems leave an impression. The Friday 8 pm show was a programming gem, Saturday's 8 pm show had its own gem, and the outdoor finale was a flawed but beautiful gem, lush with dark suspense.

Of all the performances missed and seen in this 3-day weekend, the one that stood out was Mari Meade's The Dirt

Belies Us. A striking opening duet between Breanna Gribble and Hannah Darrah seems hard to beat, or even to match, and yet the second duo of Allison Beler and Rachel Rizzuto is equally, and differently, striking. Vivaldi's bassoon concerto in A minor powers the whole. Bassoon has a penetrating yet sad timbre that seems as if it should soothe but excites instead, and there is something perfect about the way it works with the dancers onstage here. Costumes by Marc Witmer give a sort of madwomen-in-Victorian-underwear flavor, also just right. The costumes are white, almost, but dirt on the dancers, barely visible, does belie some darkness in these pure-looking creatures. All four move with such vigor, jousting and testing each other in little sparring confrontations. Where the first duo curves and curls

Page 49: WHITE WAVE_DDF Press Info

inward or around each other, the second seems bent on being linear and rigid, with stiff arms waving quickly. When claw hands appear, either in the second duo or in the quartet that follows it, the battlegame is clearly on. Each of the four has a distinct character or personality, but all share an energy. Dirt flies along throughout, and coalesces to a freeze only at the very end, one last endearing feature and a neat close.

Friday's solid program began with Amanda Hinchey's 3 Movements, also filled with kinetic energy and classical music, here by Laura Gutierrez, Yumiko Harris, Amanda Hinchey and Mari Montoya, and Bach, respectively. Hinchey is a hurricane of motion, or a tornado within the hurricane of the quartet. Her explosiveness is gasp-inducing — smooth, effortless-looking speed. This is a good ensemble piece as well, but it is hard to take one's eyes off of Hinchey. The movement is well-modulated, or well-mixed; there is never a point when one can guess what is coming next, an exciting aspect in itself. Loni Landon's On the Fence, danced by Emily Oldak, Carson Reiners and Cat Cogliando, feels similarly fresh but has a more distinct style or palette of movement. Two women within highly stretchable, translucent dusty rose fabric make far more of this simple prop than would seem likely, in Natalia Mesa's Mitosis, a pleasure to watch. Susan Koper does a poignant job performing Christie Zimmerman's The

Keyhole, a voyeuristic peek at a possibly 19th-century woman preparing to bathe and then bathing. Things move slowly, almost sadly, as if the woman is washing away something painful in the process of disrobing and sponging.

Enzo Celli mixes comedy, pathos and b-boy moves in Paracasoscia, his duet with Elisabetta Minutoli, who plays a schlumpy duckling who morphs into a diva swan when she dances, and serves as the wife/foil to Celli's sad but loveable man. And Yin Yue and Malcolm Low do an excellent job implying passion and emotion, using a combination of spiralling lifts, snaking intertwinings and moments of soft and tender slowness, in Young Soon Kim's I See Something/I See

Nothing, to wrap up Friday night's performance. Kim showed much more of So Long for Now, including the duet above, in the ferry landing finale. The sensual excellence of sitting outside on a warm night, with water and New York city as a backdrop, worked really well to make the thunder and music of Mana Kawamura's Cloudburst resonate, the swirl of Jennifer Muller's 11-member cast percolate, and Kim's duet between Marla Phelan and Emily Oldak pop and shine.
