Laptops are wonderful things. My laptop allowed me to sit outdoors on a beau/ful summer day and write my sermon for the July 8 service.

The sun gli+ered through the grape leaves as I sat in the shade of the pergola, and I no/ced many of my garden plants leaning toward the sun. Sunlight gives them life and helps them grow.

We talk of the light at the end of the tunnel when we are immersed in a difficult task or a rough patch in life. That light encourages us to con/nue the journey because we know the light brings a sense of comple/on and joy.

A few years ago, a bird got into our house via the chimney. We couldn’t catch him, nor coax him out, so we called the humane society. They said to darken the house, open the door and turn on the porch light. Sure enough, the bird flew right toward the light.

The term for plants bending toward light is “heliotropism”. A simpler way of thinking about is, that most living things prefer light over darkness. Just like plants, people want to look toward the posi/ve and away from the nega/ve.

Pastor Lloyd D. Newell writes, “It may have implica/ons for how we live our everyday lives. There is much in the world that is hard and dark and nega/ve. We cannot altogether avoid it, but we can turn away from it and turn toward the light. We can favor hope over despair, faith over doubt, posi/vity over cynicism.”

As believers, we draw on the light of Christ, and drawing on this light, we can give thanks, offer a helping hand, encourage someone who is struggling, invite someone to share our light and our love. The light of Jesus is the sunlight that gives us life and helps us grow. Let your light shine.

********* This year’s Summer Book Club Luncheon is scheduled on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at noon. The book is “The Enchanted April” by Elizabeth von Arnim. The book is about four very different women, looking to escape dreary London for the sunshine of Italy who answer an ad to stay in a medieval Italian castle on the shores of the Mediterranean for the month of April. It is described as a charming, slyly comic novel of roman/c longing and transforma/on. It was also made into an Oscar-nominated film. I will show the movie a4er lunch for anyone wishing to stay.

Please sign up on the poster located near the shepherd quilt. Those a+ending should bring a salad. I will provide desserts, beverages, and rolls. Our home is located at 4905 Su+on Lane, Greendale (about 10 minutes from church).

************ Join us for a group ou/ng to see “Mary Poppins”, the musical, at Sunset Playhouse on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 each for adults and $13 for children, aged 12 and under. Sign up on the poster, and turn your money into Mary in the office or to Robin Brodie. Checks should be made out to Whitnall Park Lutheran Church with “Mary Poppins” in the memo line. I have ordered 20 /ckets for people already signed up (as of July 9). The last day to order and pay for /ckets is Aug. 12.

******* Thanks to everyone who has already signed up to teach Sunday School next year. We have a few remaining slots, and we would like to get them all filled so that we can include everyone in the August training. If you have any ques/ons, please talk to Kelly or me. I will be available in person during most coffee hours on Sundays, and via email: [email protected], or phone: 414-254-8812 during the week.

F)!\ M* S|&}$* S"^!!% D]', We are gearing up for the new year but we need you! Our volunteer sign up board is up and wai/ng for your signature. We have some great ac/vi/es planned and we don’t want you to miss them, so be sure to sign up. Please see Kelly Brown or Robin Brodie if you are interested or have any ques/ons. With the unfortunate events that have occurred in the past months, safety has been a huge focal point for both me and everyone else at WPLC. When we return in September, steps will have been taken to be proac/ve regarding safety. The current door handles that we have on the Sunday school doors, require them to be locked from the outside. These doors will be locked at all /mes during Sunday school. Once the door is shut, anyone needing to enter the classrooms will need to be let in by me or by the teacher inside of the room. As an added step of precau/on, deadbolt locks will be installed on the doors. These locks will not only be at an adult height but will only be used in the event of any emergency situa/on as an added safety measure. In addi/on to the locks, security cameras will also be installed in each classroom. These cameras will provide a level of transparency. We asked; they told us and we listened. In an effort to make the workshop rota/on more challenging for the sixth graders, we made some changes. We have added a worship component to the rota/on so beginning in September, the sixth graders will a+end worship on the first Sunday of every month. In addi/on to a+ending worship, students will complete sermon notes. These will be similar to the sermon notes completed in confirma/on. Rally Day is September 9th at 10:15. All children should meet in church for a brief welcome back message. During this /me, the children who will be in third grade this year will be receiving their Bible. Following the presenta/on of Bibles, the children will be dismissed to start a new year of fun and learning. We will start our year at the beginning……with the story of “Crea/on” – Genesis 1-2. Enjoy the rest of your summer. See you on Rally Day! Kelly Brown, Sunday School Superintendent

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For the past few months, our bible study groups have been looking at the parables of Jesus and discussing how Jesus’ divine wisdom, spoken so long ago, con/nues to have relevance and meaning in our lives today. Parable such as, The Prodigal Son, The Good Samaritan, The Rich Man and Lazarus, and The Judgement of the Na/ons (separa/on of the sheep and goats), to name a few, have been amazing topics that have helped us not only to be+er understand Christ and His situa/on, but also to discern how greed, self-importance, pride and various other forms of sin con/nue to creep into our lives and cause separa/on between ourselves and God as well as ourselves and our neighbors. It has been an incredibly enlightening experience for me, both as pastor and Chris/an!

As we look ahead toward the fall, I have been thinking about where our journey through the Scriptures ought to go next. Since we have been so heavily focused on Jesus (as we should be!), we also need to remember that there is an en/re other Testament that can foster faith and nourish our belief; the Old Testament. The Old Testament is full of wonderful and amazing stories that Christ Himself o4en referenced in His teachings. My idea is that we dive into some of those great stories that paved the way for the coming of Jesus and therefore our own salva/on. A few story ideas I have are:

· The Fiery Furnace - Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are figures from chapter 3 of the Book of Daniel, three Hebrew men thrown into a fiery furnace by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, when they refuse to bow down to the king's image; the three are preserved from harm and the king sees four men walking in the flames, "the fourth ... like a son of God".

· Jonah and the Great Fish – Jonah is called upon by God to travel to Nineveh and warn its residents to repent of their sins or face divine wrath. Instead, Jonah boards a ship to Tarshish. Caught in a storm, he orders the ship's crew to cast him overboard, whereupon he is swallowed by a giant fish.

· The First Passover - In the narra/ve of the Exodus, the Bible tells that God helped the Children of Israel escape from their slavery in Egypt by inflic/ng ten plagues upon the ancient Egyp/ans before the Pharaoh would release his Israelite slaves; the tenth and worst of the plagues was the death of the Egyp/an first-born. The Israelites were instructed to mark the doorposts of their homes with the blood of a slaughtered spring lamb and, upon seeing this, the spirit of the Lord knew to pass over the first-born in these homes, hence the English name of the holiday.

· David and Goliath - David and Goliath confront each other, Goliath with his armor and javelin, David with his staff and sling. "The Philis/ne cursed David by his gods", but David replies: "This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down; and I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philis/nes this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that God saves not with sword and spear; for the ba+le is God's, and he will give you into our hand."

These are just a few of the stories that I hope to cover this fall. They represent half of the stories that we will look at over an eight-session study, which of course means we need four more. I can surely come up with an addi/onal four stories, however I would like your input as to what you would like to study. What O.T. bible passages intrigue you…what stories have you heard in the past and said to yourself, “I just don’t understand that”; now is the /me to find out! Please let me know what interests you in the original Scriptures, and we will explore those stories together!

Hope to see you in bible study! God’s blessings be with you all!

Pr. Michael
