LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Jan Arnold
W hen I asked you to let me know what
you thought of my first issue of Nailink,
I never expected to get an email like the
one I got from Toni Arends, whose story
was so compelling that I wanted to share
it with you. “Just read my first issue of
Nailink and LOVED it!” wrote Toni, who just finished cosmetology
school and is “gobbling up CND and everything about it.” What’s
compelling about Toni’s story is that at 57, she quit her job as
an executive assistant at the Iowa College of Science to enroll in
beauty school, giving up a great salary as well as medical and
dental benefits. For Toni, it all started with an ad she saw in the
window of La James International College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The
ad was for CND Shellac. “I had always been interested in fashion
and was an artist in high school, and while I was just 5’2” I’d also
done some modeling,” she said. “Now after four kids, I am twice
my size (I’m working on that, too), but my passion for art and
fashion came back in a rush when I saw that ad. In that moment I
just knew that I had to learn everything I could about CND Shellac.”
Toni signed up for beauty school that day, then gave her employer
three months notice before quitting her job.
Now that she has her license, Toni plans to go into business with
her hairdresser, Wanda Van Mill. For Toni and Wanda, it’s all in the
family—Wanda’s oldest son is married to Toni’s youngest daughter.
They’re waiting for funding to come through so they can renovate
a former beauty salon in New Hartford, a small town near Cedar
Rapids that survived a tornado in 2008, only to be completely
flooded a week later. For the time being, Toni has set up shop in
Wanda’s home where they share a room. For prom night, Toni
offered local high school girls a deal on a CND Shellac mani-pedi,
even throwing in some nail art and a little bling. “With Shellac, they
could have their nails done up to a week before and have more
time to do other things the day of the prom,”
says Toni, whose goal is to bring fashion and
beauty to a small farming community.
Oh, and to have her photo taken
with Jan Arnold. “She
is my inspiration,” says
Toni, who has started
a blog to document her
experience. Check it out at
http://55andchanginglanes.
blogspot.com. In the
meantime, keep those
emails coming to marianne.
[email protected]. You
just might find your own story
in a future issue.
THE LIST1. IN THE MOOD FOR NUDE. I can’t wait to wear the new summer Flesh Forward trend for nails. There’s something very cleansing about stripping off dark color and going nude. I think I’ll use two coats of CND Shellac Cocoa, but I’ll ice the edge of the nail in Black Pool…a trick that makes my nail bed look longer and keeps me connected to my dark side. 2. NEARLY NEONS. Another major color trend for summer is bold, crayon brights! I am especially entertained by the bold graphic contrasts shown at Jill Sander. The best piece is a great dress with a short sleeved T-shirt in neon green and an electric orange bubble skirt that goes all the way to the floor. What a smashing look for a summer soiree! Feel free to try the same mix on fingers and toes! I’d do CND Green Scene on fingers and Electric Orange on toes! Guess I need to plan a party!
3. BIRDSONG. The sweet chirp of baby birds reminds me of spring. It’s a happy song that inspires me to take more long walks and get some fresh air and a little bit of sun (we need the vitamin D). Maybe I’ll even pamper myself with a citrusy SpaManicure or deeply cooling Marine SpaPedicure!
4. ARUGULA. I love arugula. I love the color, the smell, the peppery taste, the artistic shape, the texture and the flavor it adds to salads, pasta and veggies. One of nature’s splendors!
5. HEARTFELT GOOD WISHES. The natural disasters in New Zealand and Japan remind us to be thankful for life, family, friends, good health and well being. Our hearts go out to dear CND friends Aimee, Ann, Wayne, Miho and Mr. Yoshikawa. May God protect you and yours.
Think of it as the new take on natural—a porcelain nail that positively shimmers.

The most important trend
this season has to be Flesh
Forward, CND’s take on the
‘70s-inspired rich bohemian
look. It’s like a first-class ticket
on the Marrakech Express with
luxe fabrics paired with a flawless porcelain
creme nail. At Elie Saab, nails were painted
in Desert Suede Colour, while toes sporting
Putty peeked through a floaty caftan. A
Desert Suede pedi at Catherine Malandrino
got a Super Matte Top Coat. Meanwhile
at Diego Binetti, Roxanne Valinoti paired
Perfectly Bare Colour with Perfectly Bare
Shimmer Effect for a sophisticated look
that’s a little less flower child and a lot more
trust-fund baby. So go ahead, put it in neutral
this summer. You can’t go wrong.

THE BIG O You know you’ve arrived when you get
a ringing endorsement from Oprah, and
CND Shellac got a major shout-out in
the May issue of her magazine. After
trying Shellac for themselves, the beauty
editors couldn’t say enough about the
revolutionary manicure. Alessandra, the
assistant beauty editor, reported that her
fiery red manicure remained chip-free
for 21 days. Even more astonishing is that
Val, the beauty department’s “skeptic in
chief,” was won over when she had a CND
Shellac pedicure and was back at the
office “wearing socks and boots in less
than an hour.” Enough said.
Solar SystemYour CND Shellac clients should be using SolarOil
daily and repeatedly. Why? It helps moisturize
their natural nails and keep them flexible. If your
client’s natural nails are overly dry, try a warm
SolarOil soak. You can use an oil warmer or place
a small bowl of SolarOil in a larger bowl of warm
water until it’s the
desired temperature.
Have your client
soak her fingertips
in the oil for about
five minutes. If white
spots appear on
the natural nail after
Shellac removal,
massage SolarOil
into nails before
reapplying Shellac.
ON OUR RADAR
It’s always happy hour at Paint Shop in Beverly Hills.
ith its Moroccan-inspired
interior and relaxing
outdoor patio, Paint
Shop in Beverly Hills has
the kind of laid-back
atmosphere that attracts
a passionate tribe of fashion-forward followers,
including Tyra Banks and Janet Jackson. “We
believe it’s happy hour all the time, and not just
someplace else, but right here, right now,” says
owner Julie Serquinia, who began receiving
favorable press almost the minute she opened
Paint Shop 10 years ago. A master of marketing,
Serquinia created a menu of cocktail-inspired
services like the ‘Ritas & Rocks pedicure and the
Shaken, Not Stirred mani-tini (clients soak their
nails in an oversize martini glass).
“‘Ritas and Rocks is still the house favorite,”
says Serquinia of the invigorating pedicure that
features limes in the footbath and a foot polish
infused with agave extract. Legs are massaged
with lime-scented oil before polish is applied.
Another popular service is the Lemoncello
Double Peel Smoothie, the ultimate warm
weather treatment. A footbath is filled with
lemon slices, hot rocks and extra virgin olive oil.
After a lively lemon scrub, legs are wrapped in
cold towels.
Socializing has always been on the menu for
Paint Shop regulars, and Serquinia supervises
the high-energy musical selections that invite
Wmixing and bonding among clients. After nearly a
decade on Robertson Blvd. in Beverly Hills, Paint
Shop has relocated to larger digs on Third Street
where Serquinia’s husband, former Juan Juan
Artistic Director Domingo Serquinia, oversees a
7-station hair styling area. The move has been
good for business, attracting the kind of upscale
clients who shop at The Grove, a boutique
shopping mall and restaurant complex across the
street.
But that’s not all that’s changed at Paint Shop.
Recently Serquinia discovered CND Shellac, which
has revitalized her nail business. Can’t wait to see
what kind of mani-pedi she comes up with next.

FIVE EASY PIECESCND has been collaborating with designer Jason Wu for the past several seasons. Now he’s created a limited collection of four new shades of nail colour
exclusively for CND that he showed on the runway at his spring 2011 show. Three were inspired by iconic
beauties Veronica Lake (a deep oxblood red), Sophia Loren (a mushroomy gray) and Brigitte Bardot (a muted rose-pink). Miss Wu is the designer’s signature shade—a light gray that dries with an opaque matte finish. Last but not least, an Effect called Anna simulates the look of tweed when applied over dry nail polish.
In The PinkPantone, the global authority on color, has announced that Honeysuckle will be one of the hottest colors in women’s fashion this season. As luck would have it, CND just happens to make a shade of hot pink called Smoochie that’s a dead ringer for Honeysuckle. We see fashionistas everywhere sporting Smoochie mani-pedis this summer.
Tough as Nails!CND Shellac is still generating buzz in the press, and now there are 12 new shades for even more layering options.
Hit Us With Your Best ShotOne of the things we love best about CND Shellac is the look of surprise on a client’s face when she digs around in her handbag for her car keys right after the service and her manicure remains smudge-free. How sweet it is.
You Asked For ThemFor those of you who have
been jonesing for new shades
of CND Shellac, the wait is
over. CND has just unveiled 12
new colors that range from
beige to black, expanding the
Shellac line to 24 chic shades
that offer unlimited layering
options.
THE LAYERED LOOKWith CND SHELLAC and a little
imagination, there’s no limit to what
you can create. One of our favorite
combinations is Black Pool with a
coat of Beau on top that creates
an entirely new shade that looks
like gunmetal. One nail tech wrote
to tell us that her favorite layering
combo for spring is Hot Pop Pink
and Hot Chilis. Another cool combo
you might want to try is Rock
Royalty and Negligee.
