Our Condolences….

To Liz Breaux and family

on the loss of her beloved husband,

Edgar Breaux

Who passed from this life on June 15, 2015, and

whose Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 26, at 11:00 a.m.

My dear Parishioners,

His name is Chris Singleton. He is the nineteen year old son

of Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, who together with

eight others, was brutally murdered by a white supremacist

gunman this past Wednesday evening as they attended a Bi-

ble study at the Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston,

South Carolina. Not 24 hours after the slaughter, Chris, a Southern Charleston University baseball player, after attend-

ing a prayer vigil, told the media that “Love is always

stronger than hate,” and if everyone loves the way his Mom

loved, “then hate won’t be anywhere close to where love is.”

Later, referring to the killer, Chris told the BBC, “We’ve

already forgiven him for what he’s done and there’s nothing

but love from our side of the family.”

While here, I might deeply and rightly lament the tragic loss

of nine precious lives and vent my feelings about the insanity

of racial prejudice, my thoughts focus on the contrast be-

tween nineteen year old Chris Singleton and twenty-one year

old Dylann Roof; Chris, the personification of love, Dylann,

the personification of hatred. I have no idea of how such

seething hatred for Black people developed in young Dylann

Roof. I do know that Chris Singleton was raised by a lov-

ing, God-fearing, woman who nurtured and coached him and his siblings in all the right ways. From the time he was six,

his mother took him to church, and he mentioned how his

faith had helped him cope with her untimely death. His

strength and courage, his lack of malice and determination to

press forward in the way he believes his mother would have

him do, are both an inspiration and a challenge not only for

other Black youth, but for all of us of whatever age or color.

This weekend we pray for the families and all who mourn

the loss of those nine wonderful people in Charleston, South

Carolina, but let us pray also that racism in all its ugly forms

may be banished from the face of this earth.

- Fr. Jerome, C.P.

P. Alberto, C.P.
