Creating and eMPoWering the village

Michael E. WilliamsPresident and Chief Executive OfficerOrchards Children’s Services

Adam S. FormanBoard Chair 2018-2019Orchards Children’s Services

Many are familiar with the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” It means that an entire community must positively interact with children for them to grow in a safe and healthy environment. In short, the village looks out for the children. Creating and empowering a strong and vibrant village is at the heart of what we do every day at Orchards.

The way we create the village is listening to what our families and children need and evolving to meet their needs. Orchards has changed several times in our almost 60 years of existence. From our humble beginnings with the National Council of Jewish Women as a residential home for Jewish boys, we added foster care and adoption services. When we saw the rise of high-risk situations that often led to foster care, we decided to strengthen the village by offering family preservation programs. Annually, Orchards family preservation programs serve thousands of families in fifteen counties. With the help of the village, over 90% of those children were able to remain in the home.

The one constant in Orchards programming is our mission – Strengthening the community through quality services to children and families. Our Board and Staff remains focused on this mission and we look to it to guide our decisions. It is through our mission that we are pleased to report our most recent additions to our service continuum in education and job readiness.

Orchards recently implemented the ParentChild+ program with a grant from the Ballmer Foundation that provides assistance to Detroit area children ages 16 months to four years old. This program offers in-home services that focus on enhancing parental involvement while providing assistance with the educational needs of their child(ren).

The Orchards Promise Scholarship program was established with the help of several foundations and individuals in the village. The scholarships allow academic opportunities for youth beyond their high school years.

Orchards is continuing its efforts to strengthen the community “the village”. If asked, “Who serves children and families in need of support and advocacy on a daily basis?,” the answer is WE DO!! It is in that spirit that we invite you to support us in our mission, so when asked the same question, you can respond, I DO!!!

You are vital to the growth and sustainability of the village. We appreciate your assistance in helping us empowering “the village” to better serve our children. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Executives and Staff we say “THANK YOU!”

Michael Williams, President and CEO

Adam S. Forman, Board Chair

Orchards Children’s Services continues to provide a temporary environment for

Michigan’s most vulnerable children who need a safe, loving home where they

can recover, develop and grow. The foster care program supported 323 children

to permanency through reunification with biological parents, adoption or

Independent Living over the past year. Placement Services Staff continue to

recruit new foster and adoptive parents as well as independent living providers

who are able to meet the needs of children requiring placement.

2

In 1986, Orchards Children’s Services entered the adoption field. Since then, we have

completed over 3000 adoptions, including placing 53 children in adoptive homes last year.

Recruited families come from all walks of life. Although most of the children are adopted by

a foster parent or relative there is no “typical” adoptive family and there continues to be an

ongoing need for families willing to adopt older children. In an effort to support adoptive

families, the Orchards offers an array of services and resources such as training and education

to assist children and their adoptive families.

Orchards Family Preservation Programs continue to provide services

to high-risk families to prevent the placement of children in foster

care. Orchards preservation programs have expanded and now serve

8,000 children in fifteen counties throughout southeastern Michigan.

Family Preservation services are offered for a wide variety of families

ranging from those who are having difficulty assisting their child(ren)

to attend school regularly, to those with youth returning home after

residing in a residential, juvenile justice, or foster care placement,

to those whose children are at risk of being removed

due to domestic violence. Orchards

works with many domestic

violence shelters

such as

Haven in Oakland County, SafeHouse in Washtenaw County, LACASA

in Livingston County, and First Step and Interim House in Wayne

County to assist families leaving the shelters as they obtain housing.

The primary goal of preservation services is to help families safely

parent their children by the teaching of parenting skills, providing

concrete and therapeutic services as well as community linkages

so families can sustain their gains after Orchards services close.

On call 24/7, workers assist families with the formulation and follow

through of specific safety and crisis plans around situations that may

pose a risk to child(ren)’s wellbeing and safety. They teach a variety

of life skills, including household organization, accessing community

resources, budgeting, nutrition/meal planning, and child management

techniques. Parents are then able to help their children develop

responsibility and confidence. Periodic follow-up visits have

shown us that families continue to benefit from

these learned skills.

“eduCation is the PassPort to the future, for toMorroW Belongs to the

ones Who PrePare for it today.” - MalColM x

This quote describes one of the biggest lessons I learned from

Orchard’s Youth Board. I remember one Youth Board meeting

at the Freedom House where an immigration lawyer

came to discuss conflict pertaining to immigration.

I remember how interested we all were, everyone

was eager to find solutions for these issues.

I was delighted that the group was being

exposed to the real and sometimes cruel

world we live in. Not only did that meeting

teach me the value of education and how

to make a change, it taught me the

responsibility to look out for, and be a

role model for young children.

When I think back to the “Shopping with

the Lions” event that the Youth Board

participated in, I remember sitting next to a

very quiet little boy after the event was over.

I was curious to hear about how his shopping

went, and what was most exciting to him about

the evening. We began talking about his favorite

item which was a book. I was surprised as I thought it

would be a toy like the other kids. He went on to tell me

how he was teased at school for enjoying reading and doing math

problems at recess. He then tells me that his knowledge is his “

super-power”; I had agreed it was indeed. His last words to me were,

“I can’t wait to be big and smart like you when I grow up.’’ It was those

words that made me realize how big of a role I have; it made me

realize how much of a positive impact I have on young kids. This one

experience has stuck with me and has continued to motivate me to be

the most knowledgeable person I can for the sake of making change

and being a positive image for the youth. Those few interactions and

lessons learned from being on the Youth Board has really shaped me.

It has exposed me to so many different people and communities that

I wouldn’t see or meet otherwise. It has contributed to who I am today.

Being the President of the Youth Board taught me even more. I’ve

learned the qualities of leadership and initiative. It has given me the

opportunity to listen to my peers, and be their voice. The Youth Board

has changed me for the better. I am now more hands-on and ready

to prepare for the next task. Being in a leadership position has also

given me the push to strive to do better! I have made so many great

friendships with so many other high school students from all over

the state and we have shared heart-warming experiences together.

The Youth Board has been, by far, one of the most impactful things to

experience and has brought me so much joy!

Mission StatMeNt

Work PlaCe safetyIn 2018 Orchards continued its relationship with Keene Training and Consulting to provide staff with informative and practical training. Keene’s trainers are all current law enforcement or retired military personnel. Training topics included Active Violence in the Workplace and Hands on Self-Defense training. Violence in the workplace is unfortunately a reality in today’s world and making sure our staff are the most prepared they can be is of the utmost importance. Keene will conduct a verbal de-escalation training called Winning with Words in May 2019.
