Even in the extreme heat of the summer, an underground home stays cool. It protects those who live there against the high temperatures and strong winds of a desert climate.
How do you think these homes are made?
Think, pair, then share your ideas.
Then, around the sides of the pit, caves are
dug out. These are used as
rooms.
The open pit can be

This can make it seem a bit like an underground maze!
First, a large pit is dug in the ground, between
five and nine metres deep.
The open pit is used as a courtyard for meeting and doing chores.

Sometimes, cave rooms are made that are above the bottom level of the pit. They are reached by using ropes or stone steps that have been carved
into the earth.

How are these rooms similar or different to the rooms in your home?
The walls are painted white so that the room is as light as possible. Shelves can be cut into the walls at the back of the rooms. Traditional
cave homes do not have any electricity or running water, but there may be a water well in the courtyard.

In the traditional Berber lifestyle, the men look after the livestock (animals such as cattle, goats and sheep).
The women look after the family and make handicrafts using the wool from the animals. They weave rugs called kilims. They are often brightly coloured with eye-catching patterns using stripes or shapes. The kilims are are then sold in the local marketplace, which is called the souk.
