    Who was Charles Chaplin?

    (Hugo)

Sir Charles Spencer Charlie Chaplin, Jr. KBE (Knight Commander of the

Order of the British Empire) Charles Chaplin born in London, England, UnitedKingdom on April 16, 1889 and died in Corsier sur Vevey, Switzerland on

December 25, 1977. He was an actor, director, writer, producer and British

    composer, winner of Hollywood Oscar.

    (Franz)

With nearly 90 (ninety) silent films and sound, has grown into the most

representative figure of silent film, which has given its fame and

consideration of one of the great geniuses of cinema history. His film

abounds in classic images as well known as his own character. Their

children, Geraldine Chaplin Sydney Chaplin (1926-2009), were also

    dedicated to acting.

    (Franz)

The character around which built much of his film career, and gave him

worldwide fame, was the Tramp (The Tramp, in English, Charlot, in Italian,

French and Spain, Carlitos in Argentina and Brazil): a man with refined

manners and dignity of a gentleman dressed in a close jacket, pants and

shoes a size larger, a bowler hat, a cane and a characteristic mustache. Hisunmistakable swing walk, a marked emotional sentimental and melancholic

disenchantment against the wickedness and injustice of modern society,

made him an emblem of human alienation - in particular the emerging

    social classes.

    (Hugo)

Criticism increased when Chaplin made this film, The Great Dictator (1940),

starring alongside Paulette Goddard, his third wife.

The movie was an indictment of German Nazism and, by extension, againstall fascism and dictatorship. He began to shoot the same week that started

Second World War. Previously, Chaplin was on Hitler and declared that he

"had stolen the mustache" and the truth is that his physical resemblance to

the dictator makes the movie even more hilarious.

    (Franz)

In this, Chaplin plays two characters represent the dictator and the Jewish

barber, who was confused with it. Adenoid Hynkel, such as appointing his

character in a clear parody of Adolf Hitler, and the magnificent

interpretation of Jack Oakie and Benzino Napoloni obvious parody of BenitoMussolini, they are simply great. It seems that Hitler saw The Great Dictator,

although no known his comment about it.

    (Hugo)

At the end of the film, the Jewish barber / Chaplin makes a speech which

    reads as follows:

"I'm sorry, but I do not want to be an emperor, that's not my business, I do

not want to rule or conquer anyone. I would like to help everyone if possible:

Jews and gentiles, blacks and whites. We should all want to help, so arehumans. We want to live with the happiness of others, not your anxiety. We

do not want to hate and despise. In this world there is room for everyone,

and the land is rich and can provide all. The way of life could be free and

    beautiful ... "

In the United States during the first two years of war remained neutral, was

the cause of many problems for the author and was used as an excuse to

pursue him for alleged activities "anti-American."

On September 17, 1952, Attorney General of the United States immigration

instructed to retain Chaplin, his wife and several children when traveling on

the Queen Elizabeth to attend the premiere of Limelight in Europe until the

U.S. law decide whether he should be expelled. Formally accused him of

"belonging to the Communist Party, as well as serious crimes against morals

and make statements that show a hostile attitude and contempt for thecountry through whose hospitality has enriched."

    Later years

    (Hugo)

In April 1953, the actor was established in Switzerland. In 1957 he filmed a

movie that parodied the United States and paranoia that led him into exile,

A King in New York.Thereafter, he would stay away from his mansion in Corsier-sur-Vevey,

where he died on December 25, 1977, in his sleep at the age of 88. Ever

curious daughter Geraldine said that Charlie Chaplin never liked Christmas

or enjoys it, and died the same day every year to remind them of the date

    of his death.

    (Franz)

On March 1, 1978 his body was exhumed and stolen by a small group of

Polish mechanics in an attempt to extort money from the family. The plandid not work and the thieves were captured, the body recovered eleven

weeks later near Lake Geneva. This was reburied in the same place, but

under two meters of concrete to prevent further theft.

    Assessment and influence

    (Hugo)

It is said that humor that shows Chaplin in his films is "universal."

In a conversation between Einstein and Chaplin, Chaplin tells Einstein:

"What I've always admired about you is that his art is universal, everybody

more worthy of respect, everyone admired and almost nobody
