Q: How to describe the stage of development of the HSBC procurement organization?

HSBC ‘s procurement organization is a global organization with over 1,000 people serving 71 countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, North America and Latin America. Esther has earned a seat at the senior management table and she is leading a team of 280 people serving 20+ countries in the Asia Pacific region. HSBC has implemented category management strategies to leverage resources, capabilities and processes to influence supply management decisions. The approaches are to take leadership on all core supply management activities while maintaining robust information system for budget control and risk management. HSBC will also actively manage and develop global supply base and individual suppliers to ensure pragmatic risk management measures are in place to support the business. Q: What are the key challenges on ‘People”? The challenges of HSBC are staff retention, a dynamic operational environment vs. competition such as multi-cultural working environments, working in different time zones and staff capability to comply with different local laws and regulations. Thus, on the people side, HSBC has invested in talent management and set high aspirations for individuals, attracting well-educated management talent from various industries such as IT, Finance, quality surveying, legal profession etc. HSBC will also reward outstanding performance by advancing talent into higher positions outside of procurement in parallel with training people on the right skills through job rotation and formal training to build the global talent pool.

“TALK TO CPO” program In order to understand the key challenges of the Procurement

Leaders in Hong Kong, especially in people development, our Professional Development

Committee members visited many procurement heads in different organizations. Below are

some highlights.
