Parent / Teacher / Student Meetings

Parent Teacher Meetings will be taking place in the last week of Term 3 on Monday 16th September

and Tuesday 17th September from 3.45pm to 8.30pm. Information on how to book a time to meet

with your child’s teacher will be provided closer to the date. Students are encouraged to attend the

meeting if the parents are happy for them to attend. If you have any questions or concerns about

Foundation Unit Topic: What’s My Story Big Understandings:

What is family?

My family demographics ie. The roles of family members, where were they born and raised.

Family structures can differ.

My History and how do I know? Past, present and future

Families have special events that they celebrate. Literacy Focus: This term the students will be consolidating the main sounds of the alphabet whilst having opportunities to explore more complex sounds, such as long vowel sounds. The students will practice reading with fluency and expression and using their phonic and whole language knowledge to read more complex texts. They will be encouraged to ask questions through the reading process, make a visual picture about what they are reading and sequence events in order. Students will continue to explore letter to sound relationships in their writing with a focus on completing one clear sentence with spaces between each word, a capital letter and a full stop. This will be extended further to include words such as ‘but’, ‘because’ or ‘and’ to add detail to a short sentence. The main genres to be explored this term are recounts and narratives. Maths Focus: Understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning are proficiency standards addressed through: Number and Algebra

Art Focus: In term three, the students will extend the exploration of mark making using paint, reinforce basic construction skills and begin to explore simple printing techniques. Music Focus: This term in Level One students will look at the topics that are listed below. These topics will help students to broaden their knowledge of basic musical notes and rhythms and will also introduce them to some of the elements of drama and dance. Reading and performing basic musical rhythms Recognising Pitch and Tempo Learning about the musical alphabet Drama – simple drama games and activities

which focus on using expression, voice and boosting confidence while performing

Sport Focus: During Term 3, students will focus on developing the gymnastics skills of springs, landings, rolls and shapes and the fundamental motor skills of kicking and ball bouncing. Digitech This term the students will be learning all about coding and algorithms. They will do this using the program code.org. The students will practise giving instructions to achieve a task and will translate the instructions into symbols, such as arrows. Indonesian Ibu Smith will be taking leave during Term 3 and 4 this year. Cyara Pittas will be the Indonesian Teacher during this time. She will be continuing to develop the students’ cultural understanding through songs, dress and play as well as their spoken language with a focus on introductions, counting and the Indonesian words closely linked with their Inquiry Unit with a focus on family. Other The Foundation students will continue to meet with their Year 6 Buddies regularly throughout the term and take part in learning tasks focussed on increasing the resilience skills.

Level 2 – Year 1 and 2 Unit Topic: Grade 1 – What’s our Story?

What is a family and how does my family differ or is the same as yours?

How has family life changed or remained the same over time?

How can we show that the present is different from or similar to the past? How do we describe the sequence of time?

Grade 2 – What’s your Story?

What aspects of the past can you see today and what do they tell us?

What remains of the past are important to the local community? Why?

How have changes in technology shaped our daily life?

Literacy Focus: This term the students will continue to practise decoding by being exposed to complex sounds of the English Language. They will enhance their reading skills by being encouraged to check for understanding, cross check, back up and reread and to self-monitor and fix their errors. For Writing, the students will complete many book responses depending on the text they have read. They will also focus on the genre of Recount linking in closely to the Unit topic of History. The students will develop their understanding of nouns, adjectives and verbs and be encouraged to explore their use of time connectives in their written work. Maths Focus: Understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning are proficiency standards addressed through: Number and Algebra:

Art Focus: In Term three, the students will be creating a multi-media collage and exploring using oil pastels and paint to create different effects. They will be exploring Art as a process through responding to music as well as creating a finished product. Music Focus: This term in Level Two students will study topics listed below. These topics will help students apply some of their knowledge of notes and rhythms on various instruments and build towards playing these instruments along to songs. They will also partake in drama activities. Expanding their knowledge of musical notes and

rests (e.g. introducing semi quavers) Dance and movement Using Ukuleles, Keyboards and Guitars to play

along to rhythms and songs Drama activities and games aimed at improving

audience awareness and the use of expression Sport Focus: During Term 3, students will focus on developing the gymnastics skills of springs, landings, rolls and shapes and the fundamental motor skills of overhand throwing, ball bouncing and dodging. Digitech: Students will be developing their programming and computational thinking skills using a self-paced website – Code.org to continue work through Course 1. Year 1 will revise the THINK cyber safety acronym which underpins their acceptable use agreement and will demonstrate their understanding by combining text and images in a PowerPoint. Year 2 will combine text, photos and audio in a PowerPoint audio about our school buildings. Indonesian Ibu Smith will be taking leave during Term 3 and 4 this year. Cyara Pittas will be the Indonesian Teacher during this time. She will be continuing to develop the students’ cultural understanding through songs, dress and play as well as their spoken language with a focus on numbers to 100 and Indonesian words closely linked with their Inquiry Unit What’s Your Story?

Grade 4: Bound for Botany Bay

Why did the great journeys of exploration occur?

Literacy Focus: This term the students in Year 3 will be working through FOCUS targeted to their individual needs. The year 4 students will be completing STARS a program that supports the development of comprehension. They will also explore the way an author uses words and pictures to build meaning and support the reader to form an image of the story. In addition to this they will explore character point of view and how they may differ between texts. For Writing, the students will explore the genre of Information Reports whilst exploring the Six Traits of writing. Maths Focus: Understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning are proficiency standards addressed through: Number and Algebra:

Science Focus: Earth and Space Sciences looking at how the earth has changed over time and sustainable practices. Art Focus: In term three, students will focus on adding texture and dimension to their painting and modelling as they represent tall ships in stormy seas and native Australian plants. Music Focus: This term in Level Three students will study topics listed below. Students will partake in some song projects where they learn to play along to songs on various instruments. They will also take part in Drama activities and preparation for the School Production in Term 4. Performing short scripted plays in small groups Planning dramatic performances with a focus

on expression and body language Performing beats and rhythms in time as part

of a larger arrangement Using Ukuleles, Keyboards and Guitars to play

along to rhythms and songs Sport Focus: During Term 3, students will extend their decision making skills in net related games such as volleyball, badminton and tennis. The Nunawading District Athletics Carnival will be held on 2/9/19. Digitech: After completing their collaborative PowerPoints, students in Level 3 will be developing their programming and computational thinking skills using a self-paced website – Code.org to work on Course 2. The Year 3’s will be commencing this level of the course, whilst the Year 4’s will be continuing from where they left off in 2018. Students will be working collaboratively to solve a range of coding problems. Indonesian Ibu Smith will be taking leave during Term 3 and 4 this year. Cyara Pittas will be the Indonesian Teacher during this time. She will be continuing to develop the students’ cultural understanding through songs, dress and play as well as their spoken language with a focus on Indonesian words closely linked with their Inquiry Unit.

Level 4 – Year 5 and 6 Unit Topic: Grade 5 – Australian Colonies

What do we know about the lives of people in Australia’s colonial past and how do we know?

How did an Australian colony develop over time and why?

How did colonial settlement change the environment?

What were the significant events and who were the significant people that shaped Australian colonies?

Grade 6 – Australia as a Nation

Why and how did Australia become a nation?

How did Australian society change throughout the twentieth century?

Who were the people who came to Australia? Why did they come?

Literacy Focus: This term the students will take part in Literacy Lessons closely linked to the Inquiry Unit and reading the class text Boy. They will practise summarising text, identifying and using descriptive language, determining objective and subjective language and determining points of view. For Writing this term, we will be exploring Recounts through Letter Writing (letters from the past), Biographies then moving to analysis of advertisements from the past and present. Maths Focus: Understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning are proficiency standards addressed through: Number and Algebra:

Patterns and Algebra Measurement and Geometry / Probability and Statistics This term, the students will be completing Mathematical Investigations based on Real World Maths demonstrating understanding of time, mapping, capacity, rotations and translations as well as area and perimeter. They will complete problems, demonstrate their reasoning and justify their answers. Science This term, the students will continue learning how to conduct science experiments based on their chosen area of learning.

Art Focus: In term three, the students will investigate art by people of the First Nation and create a natural fibre basket. They will also study work by the Australian sculptor Robert Klippel and be inspired to form their own sculptural assemblage. Music Focus: This term in Level Four students will study some of the topics listed below. Students will also spend time preparing for the School Production in Term 4. Reading and interpreting complex rhythm charts Playing chords on the Keyboard and on the

Ukulele Learning and playing simplified pop songs as a

class on ukuleles, guitars, keyboards and drums Students work in groups to plan and create

dramatic performances Sport Focus: During Term 3, students will extend their strategic thinking skills in net related games such as volleyball, badminton and tennis. The Nunawading District Athletics Carnival will be held on Monday 2nd September. Interschool Summer Sport Competition will be held on Friday 23rd August and Friday 6th September. Digitech: Students in Level 4 will be developing their programming and computational thinking skills. Year 5 will begin by using the offline version of Scratch to learn how to program the Hummingbird robotic parts. They will then will be using a self-paced website – Code.org to work on Course 3. The Year 6’s will continue to use the programming site Scratch, using video tutorials which enable them to create a variety of games and animations at their own pace. Students will be encouraged to collaborate in order to complete and debug a range of coding problems. Indonesian Ibu Smith will be taking leave during Term 3 and 4 this year. Cyara Pittas will be the Indonesian Teacher during this time. She will be continuing to develop the students’ cultural understanding through songs, dress and play as well as their spoken language and Indonesian words closely linked with their Inquiry Unit.
