Priestly Ponderings Easter was early this year, so by the time you
read this, Easter will have come and gone. During the weeks of
April we will be reading Acts of the Apostles and learn- ing about
all their activities. We can only imagine how terrible the
disciples must have felt and how scared, having watched the death
of the person who had given them so much love, support and
guidance. How shocked they were to find that Jesus was no longer in
the grave. All that he had told them had come true - but how could
they understand this? It would have been easy for them to dwell
only on the cross and the death of Christ. But the most important
aspect of the events for them and for us is Christ’s Resurrection.
He is risen indeed, Alleluia! So what is significant about the
resurrection? When Jesus died for us, he took on our sins. For a
moment he was in despair, he cried, ‘my God my God why have you
forsaken me?’ before he died. Then 3 days later he rose, and we are
reminded of this in the words we use in the Nicene Creed.
‘On the third day he rose again according to the scriptures’.
The death and resurrection of Jesus are the most important events
in Christian The- ology. They form the point in scripture where
Jesus gives his ultimate demonstra- tion that he has power over
life and death, and therefore he has the ability to grant people
eternal life The teachings of the apostle Paul formed a key element
of the Christian tradition and theology. If Christ’s death stands
at the centre of Paul's theology, so does the resurrection: unless
the one died the death of all, the all would have little to cele-
brate in the resurrection of the one. Paul ( Romans 1:4)taught
that, just as Chris- tians share in Jesus' death in baptism, so
they will share in his resurrection, for Jesus was designated the
Son of God by his resurrection. It is hard for some people to
believe this but Christ really has been raised from the dead. He is
the first of all those who will rise. Death came because of what a
man did. Rising from the dead also comes because of what a man did.
Because of Adam, all people die. So because of Christ, all will be
made alive (1 Corinthians 15:20–22). And what about those
appearances? Earlier in chapter 15 of 1 Corinthians, Paul says that
Jesus appeared to Peter, to the twelve, and to 500 men and women at
the same time! Can you imagine that 500 people would all get
together to lie about Jesus’ appearance? Can you imagine that these
people would be willing to suffer and die for such a lie? Because,
being put to death for belief was the danger of the time. It is
important for us to reflect on this for our future, as it is vital
for our faith. We can know through Christ’s sacrifice, not only do
we share in Jesus’ death in baptism but we will share in his
resurrection. For Jesus was chosen to be the Son of God by his
resurrection. And all this gives us hope for our future and for the
future of the people we love and lose. This truth is the bedrock of
the Christian faith. Without it, there would be no New Testament,
no church, no Christianity. Whether you find it difficult to
believe in the resurrection or not, it makes no differ- ence
concerning the facts. However, it makes all the difference
concerning your destiny. Your belief cannot alter the facts, but it
can alter your destiny. Every Blessing
