Arizona is one of two states that will lead the nationingrowthofhighschoolgraduatesduringthenextseveralyears.Thatnumbertranslatesintomorethan104,000potentialnewstudentswithinthenextdecadewhowillbeseekinghighereducation.
ASU’saccessandoutreacheffortsarefocusedonmakingattendingtheuniversityarealityforfirstgenerationcollegestudents.UnderAccessASU,theuniversitydevelopedsolidpartnershipswithtargetedelementaryandhighschooldistrictsinMaricopaCounty,includingPhoenixElementaryandPhoenixUnionHighSchoolDistricts.
Thisyear,ASUisexpandingitspartnershipswithallschooldistrictsthroughoutthestateofArizona.Thesecontinuedcollaborationsadvancethemissionoftheinstitutiontobeauniversityofthehighestqualitythatisalsoaccessibletoqualifiedstudents.TeamsofASU’sUndergraduateAdmissions,FinancialAidandOutreachdepartmentsworktogetherwithschooladministrators,counselors,teachersandfamiliestoincreasecollegeeligibilityandconnectstudentstoASU.
ThishighlycultivatedandhighlyvaluedpartnershipbetweenthehighschoolsandtheuniversityincreasesexposureandeligibilitytoASUforthousandsofqualifiedstudents.Thepartnershipprovidesstudentstheopportunitytobecomefamiliarwithandleverageuniversityresourcestoincreaseeligibilityforcollege.
What’s New Barrett Summer ScholarsAfterthreesuccessfulyearsofprovidingaccesstoexcellencetomorethan300Arizonagiftedmiddleschoolstudents,BarrettSummerScholars(BSS)continuestoimpactArizonascholars.Studentsparticipatinginthethreeweeksummerprogramcantakecoursesrangingfromengineeringtolaw,alongwithTheHumanEvent,thehallmarkexperienceofBarrett,theHonorsCollege.PastparticipantsstayconnectedwithASUandwithBarrett,theHonorsCollege,throughongoinglecturesandon-campusactivities.
BarrettSummerScholarstudentswhoenrollatASUinfall2009willhavetheopportunitytoresideinthenewBarretthonorsresidentialcommunity.Thenewcomplexbuilton8.25acreswillfeatureitsowndiningcenter,classrooms,facultyandBarrettadministrativeofficesandactivityspace.ItisbelievedtobethelargestresidentialhonorscollegeatapublicuniversityinthecountryandismodeledafterresidentialcollegesatOxford,HarvardandYale.

As the New American University, ASU is defined by three principles: excellence in scholarship, access to
education and impact on our community. As a public university, ASU has a responsibility to serve the people of
Arizona now and in the future. This year’s entering class reflects our commitment to provide access to excellence
for all Arizonans. Creating opportunities for qualified high school students to pursue their academic dreams is our
highest priority.
The Collegiate Scholars program,whichbeganin2006,prepareshighschoolseniorsfortheuniversitybyofferingthemASUcourseworkwhiletheyareconcurrentlyenrolledinhighschool.StudentshavehadtheopportunitytotakeclasseslikeEngineering101and102,CriminalJustice,Economics,andotheruniversitylevelcourses.TheCollegiateScholarsProgramisanimportantpartoftheASUPathwaystoPostsecondaryEducation.TheaverageGPAforstudentsintheseclasseshasbeen3.5andabove.Morethan100highschoolseniorshavetakenASUcredit-bearingcoursesoverthepastthreeyears.
ThisyeartheCollegiateScholarsprogramisexpandingacrosstheValleytohighschoolsnearallfourASUcampuses.Anextensivelistofclasseswillbeofferedforthefall2009session.Classesinclude,butarenotlimitedto:AdvancedMath,AdvancedSciences,IntroductiontoEngineeringcourses,Aeronautics,andAdvancedLanguages.Formoreinformation,pleasevisit:promise.asu.edu/csp
